Poso Fire Update – June 16, 2021
EL RITO, NM – June 16, 2021 – The Poso Fire continues to be managed for multiple resource objectives – removing hazardous fuels, decreasing the probability of high severity wildfires in the future, and reducing exposure to firefighters and communities. Predicted thunderstorms dropped rain in areas around the fire but did not impact the fire footprint in general. Despite overall smoke accumulation significantly reduced from the past two days, smoke from the Poso Fire combined with regional smoke from other fires might make for continued smoky conditions over the next several days. In light of the smoky conditions, requested HEPA filters were delivered to residents in Vallecitos, and five additional HEPA filters are available at the El Rito Ranger Station. Wildfire smoke can reduce visibility on roadways and people should drive with increased care in low-visibility conditions. Those in need can call 575-581-4554. Poso Fire Update – June 13, 2021
EL RITO, NM – June 13, 2021 – As aerial and hand ignitions continue, there will be an increase of smoke in the area. Smoke may hang low to the ground at night and in the early mornings the next few days due to the weather phenomenon known as temperature inversion. This occurs when warm air caps the cooler air below it causing smoke to become trapped underneath which will settle into the valley bottoms—most often at night and in the early morning. The trapped smoke generally begins to lift after the sun rises and heats the earth’s surface. The air heated by the earth’s surface will push the colder layer of smoke up into the higher atmosphere and the smoke mixes with the air above and is transported away. Smoke in the air can also be affected by wind speed and direction. If heavy smoke is present, those who are more vulnerable should take precautions such as staying inside and avoiding prolonged outside activity.
Start date: May 29, 2021
Location: Carson NF, El Rito Ranger District, 10 miles north of El Rito, adjacent to FR123
Cause: Lightning Size: 1450 acres Percent Contained: 18%

Fuels: Ponderosa pine and mixed conifer
Operations: Firefighters successfully implemented hand firing of the northern edge of the fire perimeter. This operation has added depth to the containment line and will increase success of holding the fire within the perimeter. Dozer operations in the south side of the fire have been making great progress in reinforcing the fire line on the north side of Middle Fork. This containment line will cut off southward progression of the fire. Unmanned Aerial System (drone) reconnaissance flights revealed spot fires that were quickly suppressed on the northeast corner of the fire.
Weather: Mostly sunny, 20% chance of rain, maximum temperatures of 84 to 87 degrees in the higher elevation 88 to 92 in the lower elevation, minimum humidity 6 to 11%, south winds 5 to 6 mph shifting to the southwest 6 to 12 mph in the afternoon. Gusty and erratic winds expected near thunderstorms in the afternoon.
Values at risk: Vallecitos watershed, cultural and historical sites.

June 12 2021 Fire managers plan to implement hand ignitions
Related Incident:
Publication Type: News
EL RITO, NM – June 12, 2021 – Fire managers plan to implement hand ignitions on the northern edge of the fire perimeter today. This is in conjunction with ongoing aerial ignitions. This fire is at a crucial point in which connecting the burning areas will keep the fire within prepared containment lines. The area surrounding the fire has already experienced wildfire as well as prescribed fire. Once management tactics are complete, the Poso Fire will fit into the surrounding areas like a puzzle piece creating a larger buffer of fire resilient landscape. This will aid in the protection of the adjacent communities from the future threat of wildfires. Firefighters are working around the clock with nighttime operations utilizing unmanned aerial systems (drones) to continue firing operations while the conditions allow for lower intensity fire behavior.

Operations: Fire plays a natural role in ecosystem health and can serve as a land management tool, naturally occurring wildfires can be used to improve habitat and restore the ecological balance of natural landscapes. The Northern New Mexico Incident Management Team is taking advantage of the lightning caused Poso Fire to implement management tactics that meet multiple resource objectives. These objectives include promoting forest health by allowing natural fire to return to the eco-system, reducing hazardous fuels and the risk of wildfires and their effects, and limiting firefighter and community exposures. To accomplish these objectives, the Incident Management Team is using mechanical fuel reductions (mastication) as well as daytime and evening hand and aerial firing operations. These firing operations, as well as increased use of modeling and situational awareness gathering technologies, are helping to promote modern planning, effective operations, and minimized effects to the surrounding communities.
