Firefighters assigned to the Pinnacle Fire, continued to patrol and mop up fire lines around the perimeter of the fire yesterday. Water drops were used to cool identified hot spots, and firefighters began suppression repair. This activity consists of repairing bulldozer lines, installing water bars to control erosion, and chipping brush cut from fire lines.

A Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team has been ordered to survey the fire footprint and evaluate the severity of the burn. Once complete, they will plan and conduct repair of severely burned sections of the fire to minimize potential flooding and erosion.

The Graham County Sheriff’s Office rescinded the evacuation status for the Aravaipa-Klondyke corridor yesterday. The only remaining portion of the fire perimeter still in evacuation status of “Go” is for the Black Rock Road area on the northern end.

Currently assigned resources include 4 hand crews, 4 helicopters, 20 engines, 10 water tenders, and 2 dozers. Resources are being released from the Pinnacle Fire as operational needs are reduced. These resources will rest, resupply, and prepare for their next assignment in what is unfolding as a long and severe fire season in the western United States.

Ko’ Ba Nagoni I (Fire Update)

With overcast skies and slightly cooler temperatures, firefighters patrolled and mopped up fire lines around the perimeter of the fire. When isolated pockets of heat were encountered along the western perimeter, helicopter water drops were used to cool and contain them. The other segments of the fire remained quiet through last night with firefighters continuing to patrol and mop up hot spots.

Today crews will continue to patrol, mop up, and monitor fire lines. The night shift will cease, and those resources will be integrated into the day shift. Firefighters will begin to focus on suppression repair tomorrow, composed of repairing bulldozer lines, chipping brush cut from fire lines, and smoothing areas of ground disturbance to minimize erosion.

Today’s weather forecast continues hot and dry with moderate wind and increased humidity.

Currently assigned resources include 4 hand crews, 4 helicopters, 20 engines, 10 water tenders, and 2 dozers. Resources are beginning to be released from the Pinnacle Fire as operational needs are reduced. These resources will rest, resupply, and prepare for the next assignment.

Ko’ Ba Nagoni I’ (Fire Update)

Firefighters continued to work to improve and hold containment features around the perimeter of the fire. On the northern perimeter, the significant efforts exerted Sunday and Sunday night by firefighters to hold that segment of the fire from moving north was key to yesterday’s lower fire activity. Monday, engines and crews continued to patrol, improve, and hold containment features in that area.

The other segments of the fire remained quiet through last night with firefighters patrolling and mopping up hot spots near the perimeter. On the west side, fire activity was moderate with isolated smoke from interior sources. Patrolling crews reported minimal fire activity, extinguishing hot spots and monitoring containment lines on both the south and eastern perimeters.

Despite yesterday’s diminished fire activity, fire managers caution that the Pinnacle Fire remains unpredictable and could exit existing containment features, move rapidly, and continue to grow. Interior pockets of fuel will continue to burn potentially creating significant smoke.
Today’s weather is forecast to be hot and dry but with reduced wind and increased humidity.

Currently assigned resources include 5 hand crews, 4 helicopters, 26 engines, 11 water tenders, and 4 dozers. Resource numbers are adjusted as operational needs are determined daily and within the constraints of competition from other fires across Arizona.

Firefighters continued to be challenged for the second consecutive day yesterday by strong winds. Coming from the west and northwest, winds gusting to over 40 miles per hour in red flag conditions pushed the fire eastward in the Black Rock Ranch area.  Assigned firefighters worked to defend constructed fire lines with burnouts, bull dozers, aircraft delivered retardant, and water drops. Despite high wind, these tactics were successful.  Crews were able to keep the fire south of the Black Rock and 284 roads, as well as working to protect the values at risk within that area. The night shift continued that work into this morning.

The eastern and southern perimeters remained intact and minimal fire behavior was observed.  Resources along that perimeter are patrolling and cold trailing to detect any heat that might remain.

The active fire behavior observed Saturday on the western perimeter was moderated Sunday as the westerly winds pushed the fire back into its already burned footprint. There are interior hot spots that were being monitored last night in this area by engines and assigned crews.Today’s weather is forecast to be continued hot and dry with more red flag conditions and winds similar to yesterday.

Currently assigned resources include 5 hand crews, 4 helicopters, 28 engines, 11 water tenders, and 4 dozers. Ko’ Ba Nagoni I’ (Fire Update)

The Pinnacle Fire continued to move within the Santa Teresa Wilderness Saturday, generating another substantial column of smoke by midafternoon. Fire activity increased towards the north in two separate locations. The first, west of Black Rock Ranch and the other along the western boundary of the Wilderness. Both moved into canyon bottoms with abundant fuels and began to burn with intensity. Firefighters responded with helicopter water and retardant drops to cool some of the activity as both threatened private property outside the wilderness.

Wind is generated by the location of a high-pressure ridge overhead, which is presently moving slowly to the southwest from its current location over the Four Corners area. This movement yesterday created a gradual wind direction shift from southeast to north-northwest winds. Due to the slow movement of the ridge, it was late in the day before the shift occurred.  The wind shift is significant as it pushed the fire in new directions. Firefighters have prepared outside the Santa Teresa Wilderness with constructed bulldozer lines to defend private property and other values.

The eastern and southern portions of the fire remain calm with little fire activity. All of the declared containment of the fire line exists along this portion of the fire.

Currently assigned resources include 5 hand crews, 4 helicopters, 28 engines, 11 water tenders, and 4 dozers. Resource numbers are adjusted as operational needs are determined daily and within the constraints of competition from other fires across Arizona.

Ko’ Ba Nagoni I’ (Fire Update)

Friday was another day of high heat and low humidity with the fire finding new sources of fuel. The result was another day of active fire behavior and generation of a significant smoke column. At about 2:00 p.m., a large column of smoke could be observed as the fire consumed new fuels within the wilderness, causing it to move west.

Crews and fire managers worked through the day and last night to prepare and plan for actions to mitigate the fire’s western movement once it travels to more manageable terrain outside the federally designated wilderness area. Fire managers will focus on this segment of the fire in the next few days.

The eastern perimeter of the fire remained calm with little to no smoke. Fire in the Black Rock Ranch area was moderate. However, at Black Rock, structure protection sprinklers, pumps, and water blivets remain in place, prepared to be activated should the fire again move in that direction. On the southwest section, firefighters continued to patrol and reinforce fire lines near Klondyke as the fire cools from recent suppression activities.

Currently assigned resources include 4 hand crews, 4 helicopters, 29 engines, 11 water tenders, and 4 dozers. Resource numbers are adjusted as operational needs are determined daily.

The Office of the Chairman announced today upon approval by the San Carlos Council that Level 3 Fire Restrictions for the San Carlos Apache Reservation will be implemented.  Upon review by the Tribe’s Recreation & Wildlife Department and Forest Resources, it has been determined that Level 3 Fire Restrictions are necessary to prevent wildfires.

All forest and rangeland areas (Hill Top Range, Point of Pines and Malay Gap Forest Management units) and including Seneca Lake are hereby closed.  The only exceptions are those camp meetings and sunrise dances already scheduled in these forest and rangeland areas between the dates of June 14-27, 2021. Effective June 28, 2021, no camp meetings or sunrise dances will be allowed in these areas until such time fire restrictions are lifted.

In addition, roads north of Highway 70 will be closed.  These include Route 8, Road 1100 North of Talkalai Junction, Road 1300 from west to east off of Arizona Highway 60, within the exterior boundaries of the Reservation, except existing communities and homes.  The exceptions are those attending camp meetings and sunrise dances already scheduled in these forest and rangeland areas between the dates of June 14 – 27, 2021.  Recreation & Wildlife Department will be monitoring road closures in these areas.

Talkalai Lake will remain open for recreational purposes with propane use only.  No campfires are allowed.

No member of the public is allowed in these areas until further notice.  Any entry by member of the public into these restricted areas shall be considered trespass subject to prosecution, fine, or both. Ko’ Ba Nagoni I’ (Fire Update)

After an extended period of active fire behavior, the Pinnacle Fire calmed today. Its steady movement to the northwest temporarily slowed when it entered terrain composed of numerous ledges and rocks within the Santa Teresa wilderness. The fire continues to slowly work through this area as it finds its way to available fuels. The containment percentage decreased slightly this morning due to the increased perimeter of the fire.

On the northern perimeter in the Black Rock area, the fire continues to be stalled above the Black Rock Ranch and has made only small movements since Wednesday.  Fire lines, reinforced by burn out operations conducted during the last two nights on the perimeter nearest Klondyke, held yesterday. Those control features are being continually patrolled and monitored by engines. Finally, the eastern fire flank remained calm and is the portion of fire perimeter determined to be contained.

Residents north of the Aravaipa-Klondyke Road east of the fire perimeter have had their evacuation notice rescinded and can return to their homes. Currently assigned resources include 5 hand crews, 4 helicopters, 28 engines, 15 water tenders, and 4 dozers. Resource numbers are adjusted as operational needs are determined daily.
