Current Situation:

Another 0.3” of rain fell over the Sylvan Fire in the past 24 hours, bringing the accumulation in recent days to nearly an inch total. The wet weather brings plusses and minuses for firefighters. They can make good progress on building firelines when fire behavior is subdued, but the wet, slippery conditions make the work more difficult and increase safety concerns for driving and foot travel. Fortunately, no serious injuries have occurred thus far on the incident, and we continue to make public and firefighter safety our highest priority.

Branch I:  The crews in Division G have completed a direct fireline from Sylvan Lake westward to the powerline road. Some of this line is now shown as contained on the map. The line will be reinforced and improved until fully contained. South of Sylvan Lake, in Division P, firefighters are removing snags along the Eagle-Thomasville Road (400 Road). Supervisors have determined that the moist, grassy stream bottom will be the primary control feature in this portion of the fire, with the 400 Road as a secondary backup. They are continuing to plan a firing operation to remove fuels between the fire edge and these control features, but those plans will not be implemented until fuels are at the optimum moisture content level, probably near the end of the week. Work on the fire that slopped across the road and the several spots in the area is nearing completion.

Branch II:  The portion of the fire that moved south of the Mount Thomas Trail and ridgeline in Division Z is also nearing containment. Completing this section of line in the next few days will prevent further southward movement of southeast corner of the fire. Firefighters will then clear an indirect fireline extending westward along Mount Thomas Trail as a contingency against spread of the fire in the steep, inaccessible portions of Division Z that are unsafe for crews to work in. Fire supervisors will monitor the fire’s activity in the area and take action only if necessary to stop southward spread past this indirect line. A long scree slope extending northward from Mount Thomas Trail will be used to restrict the fire’s westward advancement. In the northwestern part of the fire, in Division A, firefighters are making good progress on the fireline from the powerline road to LEDE Reservoir and from the reservoir towards the southeast. Portions of this line are now shown as contained on the map.

Weather & Fuel Conditions:  Scattered showers may return on Sunday as the warming, drying trend predicted for the coming week has been delayed by a day or two. There is a 60% chance of showers and a 20% chance of wetting rains on Sunday. The delayed drying trend will result in fire behavior being subdued for an additional few days. Drying will begin on Monday, however, and a warming trend beginning mid-week will produce above normal high temperatures by the end of the week. This will likely increase fire behavior substantially.

Situación actual:

There have been changes to evacuations, pre-evacuations, and closures. Please follow the agency links near the bottom of this update for the latest information.

Current Situation:

Firefighters are making good progress during this rainy respite from an otherwise early hot and dry fire season. An additional 0.1 to 0.15” of rain fell on the Sylvan Fire yesterday, moderating fire behavior and allowing crews to accomplish significant fireline construction. Although the containment percentage remains at zero, that does not mean that good work is not being accomplished on the ground. A section of fireline is not called contained until fire supervisors are confident the fire will not cross it. More work needs to be done to fully secure and monitor the lines, but look for containment to start increasing in the coming days.

Branch I:  The crews in Division G continue to build direct fireline and cold trail the fire edge from Sylvan Lake westward toward the powerline road. This line will now be reinforced with additional work and monitored. Similar work continues south of Sylvan Lake, in Division P, along the Eagle-Thomasville Road (400 Road). Supervisors are evaluating whether to use this mid-slope road, the moist, grassy stream bottom, or the powerline corridor as the primary control feature, but in either case they are preparing for a technically complex firing operation to remove fuels between the fire edge and control lines. This operation could take up to four days and will only be done during weather conditions favorable to the firefighters. Good progress has been made towards containing the fire that slopped across the road and the several spots in the area.

Branch II:  Crews have also made excellent progress lining the portion of the fire that moved south of the Mount Thomas Trail and ridgeline in Division Z. The objective of completing this section of line to prevent further southward fire movement should be met in the next few days. Then, firefighters will prepare an indirect fireline extending westward along Mount Thomas Trail. Portions of Division Z are steep, inaccessible, and unsafe to put firefighters into. If an accident or injury were to happen to a firefighter in this terrain, it would be extremely difficult to get them out for treatment. So, fire supervisors will monitor the fire’s activity in the area and take action only if necessary to stop the fire at the indirect line. Natural features, such as scree slopes and aspen stands, will instead be used where possible to restrict the fire’s advancement.  In the northwestern part of the fire, in Division A, firefighters continue to build direct fireline using UTV’s to access the area over existing primitive roads and trails.

Weather & Fuel Conditions:  The past two days of precipitation have markedly reduced fire behavior, but heavy fuels such as down logs remain dry. The weekend will see a decreasing chance of showers each day, while overall burning conditions will remain moderate. As the week progresses, each day will become progressively warmer and drier as a high pressure system builds over the area. With this warming, drying trend, fuels will dry quickly and fire behavior will become more active. Winds during the week are expected to be about 10 mph or less and generally from a northerly direction.

3) Being on the Restricted Trails. 36 C.F.R. § 261.55(a).

EXEMPTIONS:

Pursuant to 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this order:

1) Any federal, state or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or firefighting force, in the

performance of an official duty;

2) Persons with a special use authorization or other Forest Service authorization specifically

exempting them from the effect of this Order.

This Order becomes effective at 12:00 pm on June 25th, 2021 and remains in effect until rescinded.

EXEMPTIONS:

Pursuant to 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this order:

1) Any federal, state or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or firefighting force, in the

performance of an official duty;

2) Persons with a special use authorization or other Forest Service authorization specifically

exempting them from the effect of this Order.

This Order becomes effective at 12:00 pm on June 25th, 2021 and remains in effect until rescinded.

Forest Service modifies Sylvan Lake closure

EAGLE, Colo. (June 25, 2021) – The White River National Forest has modified the Sylvan Fire Forest Closure in place to protect firefighter and public safety.

The modification opens areas in the western part of the original closure, including Red Table Road and the Basalt to Gypsum trail system.

“We review closures and fire activity daily with the incident management team and Eagle and Pitkin counties,” said Eagle-Holy Cross District Ranger Leanne Veldhuis. “Firefighter and public safety is our priority, and as soon as we feel we can re-open areas safely, we will.”

Areas continuing to be closed in the modified order include the Hardscrabble and Sylvan Lake areas. This includes the Hardscrabble trail system and Forest Service Roads 400 (Eagle-Thomasville), 412, 413 416, and 436 and areas north of Red Table Mountain Trail. South of Red Table Mountain, the Coyote Park and Crooked Creek Park areas are closed.

Forest Road 415 (East Brush Creek) and the Yeoman and Fulford areas are open but remain under pre-evacuation status. The trails east of FSR 415 are open (Nolan Lake, New York Mountain and Squaw Creek).

Evacuation Order Update-

Due to weather conditions, the last few days helping with fire activity fire managers and the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office have decided to modify evacuation orders. 

The evacuation orders for the areas of Fulford, Yeoman and Hat Creek have now been downgraded to a pre-evacuation status. Residents in this area should still be prepared to leave the area immediately with little to no notice should evacuation orders be reinstated.

The pre-evacuation orders for Salt Creek, Bruce Creek and Frost Creek have been lifted.

The area of Hardscrabble will remain under a mandatory evacuation order and is closed at this time.

The area of Gypsum Creek will remain under a pre-evacuation order.

The areas of Burnt Mountain Rd and Woods Lake have now been downgraded to a pre-evacuation status. Residents in this area should still be prepared to leave the area immediately with little to no notice should evacuation orders be reinstated.
