 Location: Texas Canyon-area

Cause: Lightning  Percent Contained: 0%Date Reported:  June 20, 2021Size: 8,572 acresFuel: Grass and brush Willcox, AZ – June 23, 2021 – Yesterday, crews worked diligently to contain the Walnut Fire as it made its way down the hill through the drought-stressed vegetation, rocks, and logs. Due to the fire’s southern movement, a GOwas issued for residents in the Dragoon-area. As firefighters pushed to create containment lines along a portion of the I-10, the interstate had to be temporarily shut down as heavy smoke created unsafe conditions not only for firefighters, but drivers as well. Strong winds also caused the Walnut Fire to cross over to the south side of I-10. Crews worked through the night to secure the area and as a result both lanes of the interstate were reopened by 2:00 am. Multiple structure protection crews worked hard to create protection lines around houses and the Amerind Museum. Throughout the day, air support made multiple water and retardant drops on the fire, making great progress towards the goal of full fire suppression. Today, more fire crews and resources are expected to arrive. Firefighters will continue to directly attack the fire, focusing on structure protection, strengthening and securing the line along the interstate, and scouting and developing backup plans. Aviation support will continue early this morning, aiding firefighters with water drops. Spotty showers are predicted for the area starting in the afternoon however, erratic winds are expected to follow. Evacuations: As of this morning, the GO Evacuation remains in place for Dragoon Road, East Dragoon Road, North Amerind Road, and Triangle T Road. A Red Cross shelter has been set up for Walnut Fire evacuees at Benson High School in the gymnasium. The gym can be accessed off South Central Avenue, one block west of Patagonia.Shelter for large and small animals is available at the J7 Equestrian Center, located at 3036 W. Williams Road in Benson. Call Samantha at (520) 591-9950 for more information. Additional housing for large animals is available in St. David. Call Ginger at (520) 271-8206 for more information. Smoke: As temperatures rise and wind picks up, smoke may be visible from I-10 and throughout the local area. Drivers are urged to use caution along I-10 between Benson and Willcox as afternoon smoke may settle on the highway reducing visibility.Safety: Safety of the public and firefighters is always the top priority in wildland fire operations. Again, drivers are encouraged to please slow down within the fire area to help keep firefighters safe.Fire Restrictions: Stage II fire restrictions are in place on State Trust land across Southern Arizona, including Cochise County. Bureau of Land Management lands are also under Stage II restrictions. Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

Location: Texas Canyon-area

Cause: Unknown

Percent Contained: 0%

Date Reported:  June 20, 2021

Size: 6,800 acres

Fuel: Grass and brush

Willcox, AZ – For Immediate Release – The Walnut Fire was reported on Mae West Peak, in the Texas Canyon-area of Cochise County, Sunday, June 20, 2021 around 6:00 am. The fire was mapped by air Tuesday at 6,800 acres and is approximately seven miles northwest of Dragoon. Firefighters responded Sunday and have been working in rugged terrain and extreme heat over the past two days. The Albuquerque Zone Type 3 Incident Management Team was brought in and as of Tuesday has assumed command of the Walnut Fire. The team provides more resources to support firefighters in the full suppression and management of this fire.

Observed fire behavior has been creeping and wind driven. On Monday, the fire backed down the peak toward I-10 prompting trigger points to be established to close the highway if the fire hit those points. As of late Tuesday morning the fire has progressed toward the interstate and crews are focused on holding it along the road. One westbound lane of I-10 is closed as is the Texas Canyon Rest Area. Aviation resources have been ordered to assist in today’s firefighting efforts. No evacuations or official closures have been issued at this time; however local residents are advised to please steer clear of the fire area. The incident management team is working with local cooperators to fully suppress this fire that is currently burning on State Trust, Bureau of Land Management, and private lands.

Smoke: As temperatures rise and wind picks up, smoke may be visible from I-10 and throughout the local area. Drivers are urged to use caution along I-10 between Benson and Willcox as afternoon smoke may settle on the highway reducing visibility.

Safety: Safety of the public and firefighters is always the top priority in wildland fire operations.

Fire Restrictions: Stage II fire restrictions are in place on State Trust land across Southern Arizona, including Cochise County. Bureau of Land Management lands are also under Stage II restrictions. For fire restriction information – WildlandFire.az.gov

Forest Service lifts Sylvan Fire closure

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

The White River National Forest has lifted the remaining closure for the Sylvan Fire.
The Sylvan Fire has not been active or grown in more than a month. It remains 3,792 acres and is 90 percent contained. The remaining uncontained perimeter is on the rugged south side that firefighters have not accessed from the ground.
“People planning to visit the area should be aware that there is an increased risk of falling trees and rocks, debris flow and flooding after a wildfire,” said Eagle-Holy Cross District Ranger Leanne Veldhuis.
Crews are currently working to repair firelines and will continue to monitor the area. A Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) Team will begin evaluating the burned area next week.
Additional information about the Sylvan Fire is available at https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/7562/. Additional information about the White River National Forest is available at www.fs.usda.gov/whiteriver.

Actualización Sylvan Fire

EAGLE, Colo.
