Lava Fire Morning Update

July 6, 2021

Incident Start Date: June 24, 2021;
Cause: Lightning;
Acreage: 25,001;
Containment: 72%
Anticipated Full Containment: July 12, 2021
Engines: 80; Hand Crews: 26; Helicopters: 16; Dozers: 18; Water Tenders: 41; Total Personnel: 1166 Firefighter Injuries: 4; Structures Damaged: 1 Structures Destroyed: 12 (8 Single Residences)

Weather:
Red flag warning in effect from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm today due to gusty winds and low humidity. Low pressure centered offshore will move northward today causing an increase in southerly winds across the area. These southerly winds will become moderate to strong and gusty this afternoon, between 18 to 25 mph with gusts as high as 40 mph. Along with low relative humidity, these winds will increase the spread potential of any new and existing fires.

Current Situation:
California State Highway 97 is now open. Please be aware that fire and Caltrans personnel are working on the highway. Motorists are urged to slow down and drive carefully. There has been no significant growth on the fire since yesterday’s update. There are still some areas of heat within the inaccessible lava field terrain, which are being monitored.

The closure order has been modified.
See the map below or click here for the written order: tinyurl.com/7-6-Closure-Order

Handcrews are camped out and working on containment lines in the Diller Canyon, Whitney Creek, and Bolam Creek areas. Firefighters remain vigilant with crews, engines, and aircraft ready to respond to any spot fires needing immediate attention. In addition to strengthening containment lines where needed, mop up and suppression repair continue throughout the fire area including the Lake Shastina, Shasta Vista, and Graham Creek areas. The damage assessments continue to verify and finalize the preliminary findings throughout the fire area, the numbers on today's update are reduced to reflect that. These numbers may continue to change.

Continued progress made by firefighters has allowed some areas to reopen for recreational access However, there are still closures in place and areas that remain unsafe for people to enter due to the high risk of both new wildfires as well as smoldering hot spots within the fire perimeters. Weather:

Hot and dry conditions persist. The immediate threat of thunderstorms has moved out of the fire area. Current Situation:

Siskiyou County Sheriff has downgraded the evacuation order. Visit www.facebook.com/SiskiyouCountySheriff for details.

Suppression repair continues in many areas of the fire. Much of the remaining heat is isolated to the upper reaches of  Diller Canyon as well as Whitney Creek and the Bolum area. Crews, engines and equipment will continue to grid for heat and mop up along control lines while being supported by aircraft. They remain vigilant and continue to monitor for any spot fires that need attention. In the Hotlum area, there has been no additional fire growth as the fire has moved into several lava flows. Mop up efforts continue in the Graham Creek area, where crews are also monitoring for any signs of heat so they do not become a threat to established control lines. Smoke is still visible in the Bolum Creek area, west of Mt. Shasta, though the fire has stayed within control lines.

A new fire was discovered in the Sand Flat area, south of the Lava Incident. Local Shasta-Trinity NF resources responded quickly and extinguished the fire yesterday.

Below average winter snowpack and hot, dry, windy conditions have created burning conditions similar to those normally experienced in August. Challenges to firefighters include steep, rocky terrain, limited road access, and limited water sources near the fire.

Forest Service News Release

Lava Fire Morning Update July 4, 2021

Incident Start Date: June 24, 2021

Cause: Lightning

Acreage: 24,752

Containment: 39%

Engines: 70; Hand Crews: 33; Helicopters: 16; Dozers: 32; Water Tenders: 28;
Total Personnel: 1370

Firefighter Injuries: 4; Structures Threatened: 53; Structures Destroyed: 0;
Structures Damaged: 0

Weather:

Hot and dry conditions persist. Monsoonal moisture has the potential to create isolated thunderstorms which could include downdraft winds over the fire. There is a 10% chance of a thunderstorm today. Dry and more stable conditions are expected to return tomorrow.

Current Situation:

The Lava Fire has stayed mostly within its footprint since yesterday’s update, with very little new growth. Siskiyou County Sheriff evacuation orders remain in place. Law enforcement officers are actively patrolling within the evacuated area. Firefighters continue to patrol and mop up near Highway 97. Some interior flare ups occurred yesterday but  were within control lines and quickly attended to. Hand crews and dozers strengthened lines in the Bolam and Whitney Creek areas. Aircraft provided support through monitoring and retardant drops in the same area. The fire growth was diminished in the areas south of Whitney Creek and to the west of Mt. Shasta. Crews were also supported by aircraft and retardant drops in Diller Canyon area, where progress continues to be made in both the creation and strengthening of the containment line.

Below average winter snowpack and hot, dry, windy conditions have created burning conditions similar to those normally experienced in August. Challenges to firefighters include steep, rocky terrain, limited road access to the fire, and limited water sources near the fire.

National Forest Closures:

The Shasta-Trinity National Forest closure remains in effect. To read the full closure order and see a boundary map, go to: https://www.fs.usda.gov/detailfull/stnf/alerts-notices/?cid=stelprdb5392380&width=full
