California State Highway 97 is now open. Please be aware that firefighters and Caltrans personnel are actively working on the highway. Motorists are urged to slow down and drive carefully wherever firefighting operations are occurring.
Yesterday, gusty winds increased fire activity and smoke north of the Diller Canyon area, which was expected under the now expired Red Flag Warning. Aircraft were active in monitoring and patrolling for any threats to the established containment line. There has been so significant growth on the fire for several days.
Hot Shot crews remain in the Whitney Creek area, where they are reinforcing line in extremely rugged and steep terrain. Patrols, mop up, and suppression repair work will continue with support from several air resources, including Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) for the entire perimeter of the fire.
CALFIRE has transitioned out of unified command.

Weather:
Red flag warning in effect from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm today due to gusty winds and low humidity. Low pressure centered offshore will move northward today causing an increase in southerly winds across the area. These southerly winds will become moderate to strong and gusty this afternoon, between 18 to 25 mph with gusts as high as 40 mph. Along with low relative humidity, these winds will increase the spread potential of any new and existing fires.
Current Situation:
California State Highway 97 is now open. Please be aware that fire and Caltrans personnel are working on the highway. Motorists are urged to slow down and drive carefully. There has been no significant growth on the fire since yesterday’s update. There are still some areas of heat within the inaccessible lava field terrain, which are being monitored.

Handcrews are camped out and working on containment lines in the Diller Canyon, Whitney Creek, and Bolam Creek areas. Firefighters remain vigilant with crews, engines, and aircraft ready to respond to any spot fires needing immediate attention. In addition to strengthening containment lines where needed, mop up and suppression repair continue throughout the fire area including the Lake Shastina, Shasta Vista, and Graham Creek areas. The damage assessments continue to verify and finalize the preliminary findings throughout the fire area, the numbers on today's update are reduced to reflect that. These numbers may continue to change.
