Smoke Outlook 8/16-8/17/2022
Current Smoke Outlook for Central Oregon (airfire.org)

Fire
The Windigo Fire is 1052 acres with 78% containment. The Potter Fire grew by 29 acres and is now 459 acres with 0% containment. The Big Swamp Fire remains at 121 acres with 0% containment. No change in fire behavior is expected today. For additional information, see Windigo Fire, Potter Fire, and Big Swamp Fire.

Smoke
Cedar Creek will be the primary producer of the smoke, but Potter will also contribute a fair amount. The main impacts will be felt in Oakridge this morning and in Crescent Lake early this morning and again this afternoon into tonight. However, the worse air quality will be experienced in the Waldo Lake area where satellite imagery is showing that thick smoke has settled there overnight. Moderate to USG AQ will likely remain in this area through tonight. A deeper SE flow will develop across the region tonight through Wednesday transporting the smoke northwestward, which should improve air quality in the all areas south and east of the Cedar Creek and Potter fires. Smoke could get pushed as far north as Eugene Wednesday.

Northwest Incident Management Team 10, a Type 2 IMT, arrived yesterday to shadow Northwest Team 6. Transfer of command will occur at 6:00 a.m. on August 16. Daily updates will continue and a new phone number will be available for fire information at 5:00 p.m. today; call (541) 625-0687.

The Windigo Fire is now 70% contained and 1,052 acres. Crews will continue mop-up operations to ensure the fire does not grow out of its current footprint. Rehabilitation work has started on Forest Service Road 60.

Crews on the Potter Fire successfully completed burnout operations with the Ummanned Aircraft System (drone) on the southern edge. Resources on the southern and eastern portions of the fire will continue to hold the line and clean up the burnout operations. Firefighters will continue to prep indirect and contingency lines to the west.

After an infrared flight, no growth was reported on the Big Swamp Fire. Crews will continue to work off of the northwest anchor with the intention of reaching 100ft depth of mop-up. Hoses are being added to the east side for direct operations.

Resources on the fires include 861 total personnel comprised of 27 handcrews, 23 engines, 8 dozers, 11 water tenders, eight Type 1 Helicopters, one Type 3 Helicopter and two fixed-wing scoopers.

A warming trend will begin today as high temperatures reach 82-85 degrees. Northwest winds will blow over the Potter and Big Swamp Fires at 6-8 mph with gusts up to 15 mph. East winds on the Windigo Fire will reach speeds of 4-7 mph with gusts of up to 15 mph. Fire spotting distances may be up to .3 miles with a 40-80% chance of ignition. Fire
The Windigo Fire is 1052 acres with 70% containment. The Potter Fire is now 430 acres with 0% containment. The Big Swamp Fire is at 121 acres with 0% containment. No change in fire behavior is expected today. For additional information, see Windigo Fire, Potter Fire, and Big Swamp Fire.

Smoke
Smoke concerns will mainly be limited to the valleys closest to the fires of Potter and Cedar Creek and locations to the south. Cedar Creek will be the primary producer of the smoke and the impacts will be felt in Oakridge this morning and to a lesser degree tonight as winds will be more north to northeast transporting the smoke away from Oakridge. The typical diurnal NW afternoon wind will drift the Cedar Creek smoke into Waldo Lake and Odell Lake this afternoon and then down the Highway 58 corridor into Crescent Lake area by evening. However, with the flow becoming more northerly the smoke will move away from Crescent Lake and more towards Diamond Lake and Crater Lake for some Moderate AQ potential. This overnight northeasterly flow is expected to occur again Tuesday night.
