Related Incident: Cedar Creek Fire
Publication Type: News

Cedar Creek Fire, August 16, 8:00 a.m.
Acres: 4,657
Containment: 0%

*There will be a virtual public meeting tomorrow, August 17 at 7:00 p.m. on Facebook*
https://www.facebook.com/CedarCreekFire2022/

Highlights: Yesterday crews continued work on the shaded fuel break from Forest Road (FR) 19 south to Highway 58. Heavy equipment and crews have completed approximately one and one-half miles of road prep along this contingency fire line with approximately five and one-half miles left to complete. Fire managers in cooperation with the Willamette National Forest have closed FR 1928 and the Huckleberry Flats OHV area through Friday for the safety of the public and firefighters working in the area. Crews were also able to wrap fire-resistant aluminum foil around the Taylor Burns Guard Station north of Waldo Lake at the end of Irish Taylor Road. This foil will stay in place until the threat of fire passes. Firefighters and heavy equipment continued road prep from Shadow Bay Campground along Waldo Lake Road down to the Lower Fuji Mountain Trail. The Devils Staircase Wildland Fire Module from the Siuslaw National Forest hiked into the South Waldo snow shelter and began removing brush and small diameter woody debris around it and several recreation values on the southern end of Waldo Lake.

Operations: Aerial ignitions will continue today with warmer and drier temperatures expected to increase fire activity on the southwestern flank of the fire. The Plastic Sphere Devices (PSDs) released by helicopters and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (also known as “drones”) are being used to bring low intensity fire down the ridge into the Cedar Creek drainage to Black Creek Road (FR 2421). While firefighters have continued to prep alternate roads to be used as containment lines, crews will actively work to hold fire on Black Creek Road. Beginning tonight, the fire will be staffed with both a day shift and a night shift to meet this objective. Heavy equipment and crews have been working along Waldo Lake Road beginning at Shadow Bay Campground and prepping the road down to the Lower Fuji Mountain Trail. From there, crews will be working to connect the Trail, through the roadless area, to FR 5883 Road system and west to the railroad right-of-way along Highway 58.

Evacuations: Currently, there are no evacuations in place.

Weather: Increasingly higher temperatures are forecast for today with highs in the low 90s and relative humidity values ranging from the high teens in the lower elevation drainages, to 35 percent in the upper elevations. Winds will be terrain driven out of the west to northwest at 3 to 7 mph with gusts to 12 mph in the afternoon.

Closures: An Area Closure is in place for the Cedar Creek Fire. This includes all trailheads and dispersed camping west and north of Waldo Lake. The lake itself, campgrounds, and trails (including the PCT) on the east side remain open. A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place and was expanded to include areas east of Waldo Lake.

Restrictions: Fire restrictions are in place on the Willamette National Forest with the exception of the Three Sisters, Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Washington, Waldo Lake, and Diamond Peak Wilderness areas. All campfires, charcoal or briquette fires, pellet fires, or any other fires will be prohibited, except in designated campgrounds. Portable cooking stoves, lanterns, and heaters using liquefied or bottled fuel are still allowed if they can be switched on and off. Motorized vehicles may operate only on designated trails and roads, including within the Huckleberry Flats and Santiam Pass OHV areas.

Smoke: Smoke Forecast Outlooks are available at https://outlooks.wildlandfiresmoke.net/outlook. Air quality in Oakridge, Oregon is expected to be good with the best time of day to recreate outdoors being late afternoon.

 Cedar Creek Fire Update

August 15, 8:00 a.m.
Acreage: 4,422
Containment: 0%

Highlights: Crews resumed aerial ignitions with Plastic Sphere Dispensers (PSD) also known as “ping pong balls” on the southwest flank of the fire yesterday. In the Cedar Creek drainage, these incendiary devices are being deployed by helicopters and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) also known as “drones” to encourage fire movement to the south towards containment lines. Heavy equipment including feller bunchers, masticators, and graders continued working on roads in multiple areas of the fire, including along Forest Road (FR) 2419 and FR 1944 north of the fire area. Small diameter material is being removed and stacked during the construction of the shaded fuel break from Forest Road 24 south to Highway 58. Prep work also continued south of the fire area in the FR 5883 road system, which is now being considered a primary containment line after it was determined that there was no safe opportunity to construct fireline from Black Creek Road directly to Waldo Lake.

Operations: With slightly warmer and drier conditions forecast for today, UAS and helicopters are expected to continue with aerial ignitions in the Cedar Creek drainage on the southwest flank of the fire. Firefighters have adapted their strategy to contain the southern fire perimeter and are now focused on building primary and secondary containment lines south of Black Creek Road. Heavy equipment will continue removing vegetation along the road and chipping small diameter woody material around Fuji Mountain today. Crews are still looking for opportunities to construct line through the roadless area to prevent the fire from moving south towards values at risk, and scout for options to construct a primary containment line south of Black Creek Road in the Bunchgrass Ridge area. Firefighters are working closely with Resource Advisors (READs) from the Willamette National Forest to ensure that critical natural and cultural resources in the area, including Waldo Lake, are protected and damage is minimized and mitigated.

Evacuations: Currently, there are no evacuations in place.

Weather: Temperatures are expected to be 80-90 degrees with relative humidity predicted between 24-35 percent. Winds will be terrain driven in most areas with ridgetops and exposed areas seeing northwest winds 3 to 6 mph and gusts to 12 mph in the afternoon.

Closures: An Area Closure is in place for the Cedar Creek Fire. This includes all trailheads and dispersed camping west and north of Waldo Lake. The lake itself, campgrounds, and trails (including the PCT) on the east side remain open. A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place.

Summary

On Sunday August 14th, the Klamath National Forest Incident Management, Type 3 Team, assumed command of the Yeti Fire Complex. Yeti: The Yeti Fire has remained within containment lines for multiple days now. Crews are remaining vigilant for any roll out, especially on the steep slope above Highway 96. They continue to mop up as deeply as they can safely to ensure continued containment. Repair work continues as crews work to put erosion mitigation measures in place. Residents and visitors can expect to see isolated areas of smoke and heat through the next few weeks as unburned pockets of vegetation continue to smolder. An area closure is in place for public safety within the fire area. Alex: The Alex Fire is 100% contained but will be patrolled regularly.

Motorists are reminded that there is still a potential for heavy smoke along the Highway 96 corridor and to be aware of firefighting equipment, personnel, and wildlife.

Weather: With high pressure building, a warming and drying trend will continue into the weekend. Smoke from down river fires will likely impact the area in the afternoon. Evacuations and closures: No evacuation orders or warnings are in place associated with the Yeti Fire. For information on evacuations, please visit https://community.zonehaven.com/. Weather: Temperatures around 90 degrees are expected in the lowlands and mid to upper 80s on the ridges with humidity in the teens. Better humidity recoveries are expected tonight along with slightly milder conditions in the lowlands. Another warming and drying trend is still expected through at least Thursday before conditions potentially moderate.

Big Swamp Fire:  Minimal fire behavior was reported on the Big Swamp fire yesterday. Sprinklers systems placed along the 2153 Road mid-slope have been successful in holding the fire. Firefighters continue mop-up operations and are patrolling the fire perimeter looking for hotspots.

Potter Fire: The fire made progress backing down to the established control lines on the 269 road. With favorable weather conditions, firefighters are performing small tactical burns to clean up unburned pockets of fuel along firelines. Chipping and hazard tree abatement is proceeding along the remaining edges of the fireline. Smoke may be visible from interior islands of debris and vegetation as fuels are slowly consumed.

Camel Hump Fire: A new lightning-caused fire that started in the Boulder Creek Wilderness will now be managed by NW Team 10. A coordinated response between firefighters on the ground and air resources are working to suppress the Camel Hump Fire. The fire is estimated at less than 10 acres.

Windigo Fire: A designated repair group is working on the Windigo Fire to complete repairs on roads, trails, and dozer lines that were utilized by firefighters. Resource Advisors continue to work closely with fire crews in an effort to repair and minimize the impacts to the land. The fire remains in patrol status.

Resources: 23 hand crews, 15 engines, 6 dozers, 6 water tenders, 2 helicopters. Total personnel 761.

Public Safety:  As fire activity diminishes, hazards from fire effects and suppression activities remain. Crews and equipment continue to use roads for both suppression and post-fire suppression repair. Activities like brushing and chipping along roadsides and falling trees remain hazards on the landscape. You can help keep firefighters and the public safe by adhering to the closure orders until they are officially lifted.
