September 7 2022 News Release

Related Incident: NW Pasayten Complex
Publication Type: News

Contact: NW Pasayten Fires Information (509) 228-7805, https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/8397/
Increased fire activity in Pasayten Wilderness Fires anticipated due to predicted weather

Wenatchee, WA (September 7, 2022) Increased fire activity on some of the lightning caused fires, burning in the very remote, steep, and inaccessible terrain in the northwest corner of the Pasayten Wilderness Area, spurred trail and area closures over the holiday weekend. Hot, dry, and windy conditions are expected today as a trough moves into the area which is expected to create conditions for increased fire behavior. The Shull, The Parks, Kid, Three Fools, Skagit, and Elbow fires, located near the Canadian-U.S border, are expected to grow in acreage today.
In a joint delegation with the National Park Service, a National Incident Management Organization Team, NIMO Team 2, assumed command yesterday over the six fires now being called the NW Pasayten Fires, located in the Pasayten Wilderness on the Methow Valley Ranger District of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, as well as the Chilliwack Complex Fires within the North Cascades National Park Service Complex.
A number of closures are in effect including an area closure for the Freezeout Creek basin and a number of trails and portions of trails in the area. Portions of both the Pacific Crest Trail and Pacific Northwest Trail remain closed at this time.
Smoke from these fires, and other fires burning in the region, may impact north central Washington communities over the next few days. Take precautions when recreating outdoors when heavy smoke is present. Learn more at Real-Time Air Quality Map | PurpleAir, airnow.gov or visit https://wasmoke.blogspot.com/.
Update on individual NW Pasayten Fires:•     The Kid Fire, located on the ridge between Rock Creek and West Fork Pasayten, is approximately 8 miles south of the Canadian-U.S. border. The fire has been very active with spotting and torching of grouped trees. Yesterday, smokejumpers worked on protection of the historic airport cabin, situated about one quarter mile away from the Kid Fire, utilizing pumps and sprinklers. If conditions allow, smokejumpers will also be burning out unburned brush between the fire and the cabin.
•     The Parks Fire is also very active. It crossed the border into Canada a couple of days ago. There is a Canadian Incident Management Team assigned to the Canadian portion (called the Heather Fire north of the border) of the Parks Fire. The fire is about one half mile from the Monument 83 Fire Lookout at the time of this release. Firefighters have prepared the lookout by wrapping the base with fire protective wrap.
•    The Skagit Fire, located in Freezeout Creek 6 miles south of the border, spread northward and crossed over the top of the ridge and down the other side.
•     Three Fools Fire, located 8 miles south of the border, is actively backing down the ridge and through an old burn scar, it has spotted north of the ridge.
•     The Elbow Fire, located 6 miles south of the border, is actively backing down the slope near Skagit Peak.
•     Tuesday, fire activity increased on the Shull Fire located 11 miles south of the border.  -End-

Suiattle River Update September 16 2022

Related Incident: Suiattle River Fire
Publication Type: News

This is the last update from Idaho Team 1 for the Suiattle River Fire

Weather:  Today will be mostly cloudy and showers are likely today and tonight.  The chance of a wetting rain is 30%.  It’s possible snow showers may occur at higher elevations.  Winds will be light at 5-8 mph, and afternoon temperatures will peak around 59 degrees.  Conditions will become drier and warmer Saturday and throughout next week.

Overview:  The Suiattle River Fire was discovered on August 30 burning on steep slopes that required indirect suppression tactics.  Fire confinement lines were identified that maximized the use of roads and natural features.  Lines were prepared by snagging trees with the potential to fall across confinement lines, and heavy machinery was used to clear brush.  The work preparing confinement lines has been completed.  The Suiattle River Fire will continue to burn until the area receives substantial wetting rains and persistent snow cover.

Engine crews will conduct fire line patrols and monitor fire behavior today.  Firefighters will clean their work sites and remove equipment for refurbishing and redeployment.

Brush clearing the Siuattle River Road (Forest Road 26) has improved sight lines, but it’s a narrow, curving road that requires attentive driving and slower speeds.

The staff at the Baker – Snoqualmie National Forest can assist you planning your travels to the forest.  The Darrington District Office can be reached by calling, and additional information is available on the Forest’s webpage:   1-360-436-1155 https://www.fs.usda.gov/mbs   Email: 2022.suiattleriver@firenet.gov Inciweb: https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/8396/        Facebook: www.facebook.com/MtBakerSnoqualmieNF

Suiattle River Fire Update September 15 2022

Related Incident: Suiattle River Fire
Publication Type: News

Weather:  It will be partly sunny today with a high near 68-70 degrees.  Humidity levels will remain high for the next several days.  Light breezes will begin in the afternoon.  There are increasing chances of rain that may come to fruition on Friday but it will quickly abate as we go into the weekend.

Overview:  Updated mapping determined the Suiattle River Fire to be 80 acres.  Firefighters will conduct fire line patrols and monitor fire behavior today.  Firefighting equipment is actively being refurbished, inventoried, and restocked.  Fire suppression hose lays have been removed, cleaned, and rolled for reuse.  Equipment reclamation and redeployment are critical to successful fire responses.

Approximately 6 miles of Suiattle River Road (Forest Road 26) have been brush cleared as an identified confinement line.  An additional benefit of brush clearing is improved sight lines, but Siuattle River Road is a narrow, curving road still requiring attentive driving and slower speeds.  Firefighting apparatus and fire personnel have been reduced, and the need to keep the road closed to public use is being reevaluated.  Please heed all closures for your safety and the safety of firefighters who are still actively working in the area.

The Suiattle River Fire is active and will continue to burn until the area receives a substantial amount of moisture that persists.

Today is the last day the Suiattle Fire Information phone line will be active.  To assist your trip planning to the Baker – Snoqualmie National Forest, the Darrington District Office can be reached by calling, or going to the Forest’s webpage:  1-360-436-1155, https://www.fs.usda.gov/mbs Evacuations: Skagit County Emergency Services Level 1 “Be Ready” Evacuation Notice for the Lower Suiattle Valley, north of the Suiattle River, is being reevaluated to allow property owners and the public access into the area.    Fire Information Phone, 8:00 am – 8:00 pm today: 1-509-228-7805 Email: 2022.suiattleriver@firenet.gov Inciweb: https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/8396/ Facebook: www.facebook.com/MtBakerSnoqualmieNF

Suiattle River Fire Update September 14 2022

Related Incident: Suiattle River Fire
Publication Type: News

Weather:  A seasonal weather pattern will prevail this week bringing cooler temperatures and low chances of light rains.  There are slight chances that conditions could produce thunderstorms with locally erratic winds and heavy rains.  Relative humidity recoveries overnight will be robust.

Overview:  The Suiattle River Fire is active but remains well within the confinement lines.  Firefighters will continue monitoring fire behavior.  The fire will continue to burn until the area receives significant, long duration moisture.

Fire crews will begin rolling hose and removing firefighting equipment for cleaning and refurbishment.  Heavy equipment is moving large pieces of debris and felled trees farther from the roadsides to reduce roadside hazards and deepen the fire confinement lines.

Evacuations: Skagit County Emergency Services Level 1 “Be Ready” Evacuation Notice for the Lower Suiattle Valley, north of the Suiattle River remains in affect but is being reevaluated as conditions improve.

Closures:  Road and area closures will be reassessed based on changing needs and improved conditions.  A Forest Closure Order regarding the Suiattle River Fire is active.  Please heed all closures for your safety and the safety of firefighters who are actively working in the area.
