CURRENT SITUATION

Thick smoke and clouds kept temperatures in the 70s to low 80s with higher relative humidity values throughout Monday. An incoming weak weather system is forecasted to bring slightly stronger southwest winds that will bring drier air aloft today. This air movement should help break up the smoke inversion earlier today. The increase in clearer skies is projected to provide the fire with more available oxygen for active burning.

Overnight, firefighters continued strengthening and securing control lines around most of the fire’s perimeter. Crews added containment on a large portion of the fireline in the Michigan Bluff area and continue to make great strides towards completing more containment lines all along the Foresthill Road corridor. Firefighters are remaining vigilant on the southern edge of the fire to ensure that there is no threat of escape across Volcanoville Road or towards Quintette. The CAL FIRE HAWK night flying helicopter was able to assist with water-dropping operations overnight and remains a valuable resource for firefighters working during the night.

Resources continue to arrive in the area to assist with the full suppression efforts against the Mosquito Fire. A continued priority has been to secure the southwest corner of the fire. Last night, firefighters continued to hold the control lines and firing operations completed during Monday’s operations. Securing this vital piece of line, which ties into the Middle Fork of the American River, is crucial in preventing further spread to the communities to the west, such as Todd Valley and Foresthill.

Firefighters are working diligently to secure the firelines in and around all the evacuated communities. Unified Commanders are working with the various cooperators, such as the utility companies, to ensure the areas are safe before residents are allowed home. With the continued threat of fire, damaged infrastructure, and large amounts of firefighting equipment in the area, it is currently unsafe for the public to be in the fire area. Fire and law enforcement officials continue to meet daily on the progress of the firefighting efforts and are preparing for utility companies to start their repair and inspection work.

 CURRENT SITUATION

Firefighters continue to make progress building and strengthening control lines around the Mosquito Fire. Crews took advantage of cooler temperatures, higher humidity and the inversion layer staying in place for a majority of the day by mopping up and securing their lines while fire activity was moderated. Along the Foresthill Road corridor from Foresthill to Michigan Bluff and north beyond Chicken Hawk Road, crews worked to strengthen control lines through extensive mopping up of hot spots, fire weakened trees, and smoldering vegetation well into the fire’s perimeter. These actions are crucial to ensuring that the fire will not cross over control lines and will ultimately add containment once firefighters determine there is no threat of escape.

Due to the extremely low fuel moisture in the vegetation, fire activity remained active along the eastern front of the fire despite the inversion layer today. Although the area to the east of the fire includes the American and King Fires’ burn scars, there remains a large area of dense unburned forest in between the two which would be very receptive to fire activity. Crews worked in the area to the east of the fire to build indirect control lines with heavy equipment while also utilizing existing roads when possible. Firefighters continue to look for all possibilities to construct control lines as close to the fire’s edge as terrain and firefighter safety allow.

Containment lines on the southern perimeter of the fire along Volcanoville Road continue to hold and firefighters are strengthening remaining control lines in that area to increase containment. One of today’s top priorities was completing strategic firing operations to assist in locking in the southwest corner of the fire near Buckeye Point. Crews successfully completed their firing operations and have now tied fire into both sides of the Middle Fork of the American River. Firefighters will monitor and strengthen these control lines in order to hold the southwest corner.

The use of aircraft was limited today due to the continued inversion layer over the fire area. Several helicopters were used for water-dropping operations in the late afternoon hours. A CAL FIRE HAWK helicopter continues to be available and utilized for nighttime water-dropping missions. The tropical moisture that has been in the area is forecasted to exit the region in the next day with slightly increased southwest winds. These winds are also forecasted to push the inversion layer out of the fire area earlier in the day tomorrow which will allow for more aircraft use, but could also increase fire activity.

 CURRENT SITUATION

The Mosquito Fire continues to progress primarily to the north and east. Despite cooler temperatures, the historically dry fuel moisture in the vegetation continues driving the fire’s growth. On Sunday, the fire made a run to the northeast in the drainage between Foresthill Road and Deadwood Road. Firefighters have been building in-direct control lines and when necessary utilizing strategic firing operations to stay ahead of the fire on this corner.

Crews continue to look for opportunities to build in-direct control lines between the eastern front of the fire and Last Chance. The steep and rugged terrain make it difficult for ground crews to access the fire directly, therefore building control lines ahead of the approaching fire and building a buffer with defensive firing operations will allow firefighters the opportunity to slow and potentially stop the fire’s forward progress.

There was no significant growth on the southeast corner of the fire on Sunday, which gave crews more time to construct control lines coming out of Stumpy Meadows. Over the past few shifts, firefighters have been successful in securing containment lines on the southern edge along Volcano Road and to the north of Quintette. Crews continue to monitor these areas as well as strengthening the remaining control lines along this southern boundary to gain more containment.

Firefighters continue to work towards hooking the southwest corner near Buckeye Point. Crews have successfully built a control line consisting of dozer and hand lines to the Middle Fork of the American River. This control line, in combination with firing operations, will help firefighters secure this piece of the fire perimeter. Locking in this southwest corner of the fire is today’s top priority for firefighters. Crews are also in the area of Todd Valley working to build contingency lines to further protect the community of Foresthill.

Today’s forecasted weather will be similar to that of yesterday, with a smoke inversion laying over the fire area in the morning and southwest winds clearing the smoke by early afternoon. These southwesterly winds, although not particularly strong, could push fire to the northeast in areas where the fire is in alignment with topography. With clearer air in the afternoon, fire activity is predicted to increase as it has in the past several days.

 CURRENT SITUATION

As anticipated, fire activity and smoke production increased Sunday afternoon after the inversion lifted over much of the fire. However, thunderstorms remained south of US Highway 50 and did not affect the fire. Other conditions that often lead to active fire behavior, such as hot, dry, windy weather, have not been present recently nor are they expected to materialize this week. The incident’s fire behavior analyst cautions, however, that “while this is not a weather show, it is a fuels show.” All the vegetation—from fine grass to big trees—is extremely dry and burning readily. Incident Commander Rick Young went on a reconnaissance flight Sunday afternoon and confirmed that “the fire wasn’t going anywhere fast (i.e., not wind driven), but where it was burning, it was really burning.”

Helicopters flew water-dropping missions Sunday afternoon, providing assistance to firefighters on the ground, primarily on the western perimeter near Foresthill and the northern side near Deadwood Road where the fire was quite active along portions of the Western States Trail.

All around the fire’s perimeter, crews are using a combination of direct- and indirect-suppression tactics. As much as they are able, they are constructing fireline close to the fire and directly extinguishing the flames. Elsewhere, they are constructing handline and dozer line away from the fire’s edge and conducting firing operations to create a buffer and reduce the likelihood of the fire making out-of-control runs across the landscape. On the fire’s east side, for example, crews are removing trees and brush from firelines that were constructed during the American and King fires.

Firefighters will remain on the fireline throughout the night, protecting communities, extinguishing hotspots, patrolling, and conducting firing operations as weather conditions allow.

 CURRENT SITUATION

Yesterday, the Mosquito fire remained fairly active despite slightly cooler temperatures and lower humidity. Firefighters have been constructing direct control lines on the southwest corner of the fire near the community of Foresthill. Today, firefighters will continue to mop up and secure the fireline in these areas. As crews progress north along Chicken Hawk Road, they will be constructing indirect control lines due to the difficult terrain. If necessary, they will utilize defensive firing operations when conditions are favorable.

The north and northeast sides of the fire continue to be very active due to the extremely dry fuels in the area, and crews are working hard to stay ahead of the fire’s progress. Due to the steep and rugged terrain, firefighters continue to assess for opportunities to build indirect control lines to the north and northeast of the fire around Mosquito Ridge Road. On the southeast portion of the fire, the spread will follow along ridgelines flanks, and crews will continue to build control lines from Stumpy Meadows to tie into existing fuel breaks moving to the north.

Crews have made significant progress and added containment on the fire's southern edge along Volcano Road with direct dozer and handlines. A large number of resources have been placed on this southern edge to hold the fire and keep it from spreading south to communities such as Quintette. Today, crews will continue to mop up and strengthen more of these control lines to increase containment.

Overnight, firefighters utilized strategic firing operations along their control lines around the southwest corner of the fire near Buckeye Point and were able to tie into the American River. Today, crews will continue strengthening and holding these lines to hook the corner of the fire coming around to Baltimore Ridge. Aircraft will continue to be used to assist ground crews as the air quality allows.

Cooler temperatures, along with smoke and clouds, are forecasted for Sunday. The increase in humidity and shading produced by the smoke inversion and clouds should temporarily moderate fire behavior but expected afternoon southwest winds will lift the inversion and create better ventilation for increased fire activity. Crews will remain vigilant of changing weather conditions due to forecasted thunderstorms to the east of the fire along the Sierra Crest.

Mosquito Fire Update 091022 PM

Related Incident: Mosquito Fire
Publication Type: News

Cooler temperatures and higher humidity assisted with moderating some fire activity on the Mosquito Fire today, however an increase in winds has continued the fire’s spread to the north and northeast. Firefighters have been working diligently to build control lines along the area of Foresthill Road and out in front of the head of the fire toward the north and northeast. A spot fire in the area of Chicken Hawk occurred yesterday and firefighters were able to contain that fire with the help of dozers and aircraft today.

Crews are opening up previously used control lines from past fires to assist in their efforts. Firefighters have been making good progress on the southern edge of the fire using dozer and handlines. A large amount of resources have been working to hold the fire at Volcano Road as well as north of Quintette.

With the increase in fire activity to the east of the communities of Foresthill, several more Evacuation Orders and Warnings have been issued. More resources from throughout California continue to arrive to assist in the suppression efforts. Both fixed-wing and rotor-wing aircraft continue to assist ground crews as flying conditions allow.

Today with the onset of the low-pressure system, higher winds will move in which will fan the fire and increase activity. Fire crews will work to construct direct and indirect line around the perimeter of the fire. Additional resources will be working on perimeter control and preparing structures for defensive actions.
