2023 Happy Camp Complex Klamath NF
Publication Type: News 09/22/2023

WEATHER: Hot and dry conditions will persist today, with slightly lower temperatures than yesterday. A slow cooling and moistening trend will begin tomorrow as northwest winds develop through the afternoon. There is a slight chance (20%) of afternoon thunderstorms both today and tomorrow.

FIRE BEHAVIOR: Due to prolonged hot and dry weather, backing and flanking fire movement will occur in preheated receptive fuels when aligned with topography. Isolated torching, especially in areas of standing dead fuel, may occur. Firefighters continue to monitor for heat and potential spotting. Due to the chance of thunderstorms, increasing ridgetop winds in the afternoon may increase fire activity.

WEST SIDE OVERVIEW (ACRES/CONTAINMENT):

Elliot (12,835 acres, 51%), UFish (6,754 acres, 33%), Hancock (1,740 acres, 100%).

On the Ufish Fire, low-intensity burning continues in the Titus Creek drainage due to heavy fuels and snags. This area continues to be closely monitored and assessed. On the Elliot Fire, crews are monitoring the Dillon Creek area on the southwest perimeter and continue to reinforce direct line on the north.

Hazard tree removal continues along the Highway 96 corridor. Fire crews continue to work with Resource Advisors to determine and implement appropriate suppression repairs.

EAST SIDE OVERVIEW (ACRES/CONTAINMENT): Head (6,942 acres, 100%),

Townsend (81 acres, 100%), Den (294 acres, 100%), Scott (1,886 acres,

100%), Lake (200, acres, 100%), Kings (2 acres, 100%)

Suppression repair work has been completed on the Scott Fire and continues today on the Head Fire. Clean-up work continues along the Klamath River and hazard tree removal in the Scott Bar corridor is ongoing. All fires on the east side of the Complex continue to be patrolled by air resources, as needed, to detect residual heat in the fire areas.

Due to fires on the Six Rivers Lighting Complex, the Happy Camp Complex, and additional fire activity occurring as far away as the Canadian region, increased smoke can be expected in Happy Camp, Seiad Valley, and surrounding communities. For more information on the Six Rivers Lightning Complex, go to http://www.linktr.ee/srffirepio.
