Location: Southeast of Cotton, MN

Personnel: 65       Resources: 1 engine, 2 dozers,4 tracked vehicles, 1 Type One Crew

NOTE: St. Louis County has rescinded the “Go” evacuation order for the Munger Shaw Fire ONLY

Munger Shaw Overview: The Munger Shaw fire was detected late in the afternoon on Monday May 12. Minnesota DNR along with local fire departments responded. Multiple aircraft were brought in to help slow down the active flame fronts, supporting the ground firefighting efforts. The fire is active in pine and lowland fuels. St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Management are coordinating public safety efforts, including evacuations and road closures. Firefighters continue working to establish fire containment lines around the fire with heavy equipment and on-the-ground personnel. Temporary flight restrictions are in place. No drones are allowed near any of the fire areas. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Update and Planned Activities: Despite the challenging conditions accompanying yesterday’s storms,

firefighters continued to make progress leading to 25% containment for the fire. An amphibious

tracked vehicle, the Marsh Master, was utilized to access wet areas that were not accessible by

other means for reinforcing the containment line. Today’s activities include strengthening and

reinforcing existing containment

lines and mop up.

National Weather Service Forecast: The forecast for the fire area today calls for cloudy conditions with high temps near 53 degrees. Between a tenth and a quarter of an inch of rain is predicted with periodic rain showers throughout the day. Winds will be breezy from the south at 10-15 mph with gusts as high as 35 mph.

Evacuations and Road Closures:

The St. Louis County Sheriff rescinded the evacuation and road closures for the Munger Shaw Fire ONLY.   Due to the more favorable weather conditions and the successful work on preventing further fire spread, residents will be allowed to return to their property immediately.

We ask that residents be mindful of people working in the area as essential services continue to be restored.  Stay vigilant as you drive into areas that have been impacted by the fire as road crews, firefighters, and other personnel are focused on completing their assignments. Please stay alert and pay attention.

St. Louis County Sheriff's Office Divisions of Emergency Management and 911 have a website hub with evacuation and other fire information and Ready-Set-Go map. St. Louis County is coordinating and enforcing road closures near the Munger-Shaw fire.

Donations:

Staff and firefighters working on the Munger Shaw Fire greatly appreciate all the support from the local businesses and communities. At this time, we are unable to use all of the food and drink donations we are receiving.   Please be assured that our firefighters are well taken care of.

Containment: 0%    Cause: Under investigation
Start Date: 05/11/2025

Camp House Fire: Dozer crews advanced a containment line on the south end and west side of the fire and will implement direct attacks on those areas as conditions permit. A concerted effort has been made to protect the communications tower east of Bassett Lake. Crews are assessing the viability of setting up structure protection near Fairbanks. The fire is fueled by mixed forest vegetation and spruce budworm-infested forest stands. Dead and distressed balsam and aspen prone to ignition pose a significant hazard for firefighters. “Hot Shot” crews are in the field. This fire has not grown, and the reduced acreage reported is the result of a more accurate scan by infrared reconnaissance flights.

Jenkins Creek Fire: The hot, windy weather in recent days led to some extreme fire behavior with crowning, torching and spread earlier in the week. Thursday night storms have mitigated some of that. Protection of the Skibo and Hoyt Lakes communities remains a priority operational objective. Firefighters continue to assess fire suppression control-line locations and dozers are extending and connecting those lines already developed. “Hot Shot” crews have been inserted on this fire. The acreage total reflects accurate reports obtained via infrared reconnaissance flights.

Greer Fire Daily Update 05 16 2025

Related Incident: Greer Fire
Publication Type: News

Lighter winds aid aerial response to Greer Fire

Acres: 12,615
Start Date: May 13, 2025
Location: Greer, AZ
Cause: Under Investigation
Personnel: Approximately 519
Fuels: Grass, Shrubs, Timber
Containment: 0 percent

Highlights: Firefighters work day and night ahead of expected stronger winds this weekend.

Operations: Containment lines held near Greer as firefighters focused on mopping up hot spots and reinforcing the fire’s western edge. Yesterday a small, strategic firing operation near Fish Canyon helped stop further spread where the fire had crossed the Little Colorado River. On the northeast side, crews conducted firing operations along Udall Road and Highway 261 while building contingency dozer lines to slow potential northern movement. Some fire did cross east of Highway 261 but was met with aggressive aerial and ground suppression.  More than 100 homes south of Eagar were assessed for fire risk, and structure protection planning is underway. Today, fire crews are reinforcing containment lines.

Mop-up operations are underway on the western flank, while on the northern edge, crews are constructing contingency dozer lines and preparing for potential firing operations if needed to strengthen control. Structure protection teams are actively assessing homes south of Eagar and implementing protection strategies in the event the fire moves into those areas. Aerial operations were critical throughout the day yesterday, including bucket work from helicopters, scooper drops, and new retardant lines on the southeastern flank. Two additional Type 1 helicopters are expected to arrive today to strengthen air support and firefighters will continue utilizing multiple aircraft along all divisions of the fire.

Weather: Similar weather is expected today, with even drier air and gusts around 25 mph. Fire managers are preparing for near-critical fire weather this weekend, as stronger winds and lower humidity are forecast for Saturday and Sunday.

Smoke: Today smoke will be similar to yesterday and disperse to the northeast with light to moderate impacts to Eagar and Springerville.

Closures: The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest has issued a closure order for parts of the National Forest lands. Stage 2 Fire Restrictions are also in effect, prohibiting fire, campfire, or stove fire, including charcoal and briquettes and smoking.

Evacuations: The Apache County Sheriff’s Office has issued multiple evacuation orders. GO: Greer, South Fork, and residents west of Highway 261. Eagar, south of HWY 260 and West of River Road SET: All Eagar residents south of State Route 260 and between River Road and the SR260/180 junction. All residents south of SR 260, north of Forest Service Rd 85, and between Water Canyon Rd and US-191/180 and all residents north of SR 260 and west of Burk Rd, this includes residents in Springerville, AZ that are west of US-191.

Shelter for evacuees are open at the County Fairgrounds in St. Johns and the Alpine Community Center.

Highway 260 is closed in both directions near Greer. For updated travel information: az511.com

Safety: A temporary flight restriction has been issued over the fire area. It is illegal to fly drones within the area.

Black Swamp Fire Daily Update 05 16 2025

Related Incident: Black Swamp Fire
Publication Type: News

NEW BERN, N.C., May 16, 2025 – Firefighters on the Black Swamp Fire on the Croatan National Forest have achieved 83% containment. The fire remains at 950-acre footprint. A team of 88 personnel from several agencies are currently assigned to the fire.

Yesterday, an additional pump was installed on No Name Road, and firefighters continued pumping water from canals to flood the remaining ground fire. This operation will continue until the deep organic soil is fully saturated and no more heat is detected. Crews also worked on repairing roads utilized by firefighters and removing hoses and equipment. These efforts help to limit the impacts of suppression efforts on the environment.

Today, warmer and sunny weather is forecasted. Firefighters will monitor fire conditions across the fire area. Pumps will continue to apply water to the northern end of the fire to further saturate soils, preventing future fire creep as fuels dry. Crews will also continue road repair work and install erosion control fabric at some pump sites.

The public is reminded to abide by all posted closures, keeping firefighter and public safety in mind. Closures remain in effect for Black Swamp Road, the Black Swamp OHV area, Great Lake Boating Access Area and Sheep Ridge Wilderness Area, as well as portions of Great Lake Road, Seaborn Road and Holston Hunter Road.

Start Date: 05/12/2025                                                                                              4 tracked vehicles, 1 Type One Crew

NOTE: Minnesota Incident Management Team A under Incident Commander Mike Hill took command of the Munger Shaw fire at noon on May 14, 2025

Munger Shaw Overview – The Munger Shaw fire was detected late in the afternoon on Monday May 12. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Update and Planned Activities: Yesterday’s lower temps, reduced wind speed and higher relative humidity slowed fire growth. This brought much needed relief to firefighters who focused their time on building and strengthening dozer lines and securing the fire perimeter. Walk-throughs of the burn area yesterday revealed minimal fire activity especially along the southeast, southwest and northeast corners. Aircraft made bucket drops which successfully limited fire growth and cooled unburned fuel pockets on the northwest corner of the fire.

Today’s afternoon weather forecast calls for precipitation but predicts severe thunderstorms and gusty erratic winds in the afternoon. Forecasted severe storms bring challenges for fire operations in their work to contain the fire within its current footprint. Ground resources will continue with fire line construction, extinguishing hot spots and utilizing heavy equipment to build control line and secure the fire’s edge.

National Weather Service Forecast: The National Weather Service has lifted the Red Flag Warning for Minnesota, but any outdoor burning is still discouraged. The forecast for the fire area today calls for higher humidity and precipitation. The chance for rain showers and thunderstorms increases in the afternoon along with the possibility of gusty and erratic winds. Today’s forecast prediction is for winds from the south and east of 10-15 mph with gusts as high as 30 mph.

Evacuations and Road Closures: St. Louis County Sheriff's Office Divisions of Emergency Management and 911 have a website hub with evacuation and other fire information and Ready-Set-Go map. Camp House Fire: Dozer crews are constructing a line on the south end of the fire and will continue direct attack on that area. Crews are assessing the viability of setting up structure protection near Fairbanks. The fire is fueled by mixed forest vegetation and spruce budworm-infested forest stands. Dead and distressed balsam and aspen prone to ignition pose a significant hazard for firefighters.

National Weather Service Forecast: The outlook is for clear skies this afternoon, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4pm.  Highs will range from upper-60s to near 80, depending on location. Winds will be easterly at 10-20 mph with occasional gusts up to 30 mph. A quarter- to a half-inch of rain is expected once a cold front ushers in precipitation at about sunset.

Evacuations and Road Closures: St. Louis County Sheriff's Office Divisions of Emergency Management and 911 have a website hub with evacuation and other fire information and Ready-Set-Go map. St. Louis County has closed eastbound Highway 16 at Camp 26 Trail Track and County Hwy 44 is closed to northbound traffic. (Highway 55 is still open.) Jenkins Creek Fire: The hot, windy weather in recent days led to some extreme fire behavior with crown torching and spread. Protection of the Skibo community is a priority operational objective. Like the Camp House area, this area has been impacted by a heavy infestation of spruce budworm, so there is an abundance of distressed and dead balsam fir and white spruce. Firefighters will be assessing fire suppression control-line locations and tactics that present the best opportunity for success. “Hot shot” crews have now been inserted on this fire. The acreage report has been updated as a result of more accurate readings by infrared drones.
