"Going direct" means stopping the fire right at it's edge. Sometimes on the Klamath National Forest's steep, rugged terrain, it is difficult to get to where the fire is burning. On August 22, 2023, the Santa Fe Hotshots needed to get to the edge of the Head Fire. The only way they could get there was by boat! They had to be ferried across the Klamath River in boats, a few at a time to get to work. Video courtesy of Rachel Smith
A few days ago, the Elliot fire made a half mile run along the ridge between Swillup Creek and Coon Creek toward the 24 road. Crews were able to hold the fire due to defensive firing operations along the road. Video USDA Forest Service courtesy Don Fregulia, Team 5 Ops Section Chief.
