2023 Happy Camp Complex Klamath NF
Publication Type: News 09/11/2023

WEATHER:  The weather today remains warm and dry with mostly sunny skies. Temperatures will range from the low 70s on the ridges to the upper 80s in the valleys with a relative humidity of 25% to 40%. The winds will be driven mostly from the west with shifts coming from the northwest. Exposed areas may see gusty winds in the afternoon. This warm, dry weather is expected to continue through the weekend and into next week. Fire behavior on the Happy Camp Complex is expected to be minimal.

WEST SIDE OVERVIEW (ACRES/CONTAINMENT): Elliot (12,273 acres, 51%), Ufish (5,631 acres, 33%), Hancock (1,738 acres, 21%).
Work continues along the State Route 96 corridor. Weather is expected to allow for tactical firing operations in the mid-day. Fire conditions may produce smoke columns. On the Ufish Fire, firefighters are continuing to evaluate the risk and needs in the north, west and south regions of the fire. They will work on securing the indirect lines around the perimeters. On the Elliot Fire, crews are continuing to patrol and mop-up indirect containment lines between Pony Peak and Browns Creek to the east, and the Klamath River to the southeast. On the Hancock Fire, crews are building handline and removing hazardous trees along the southeastern edge of the fire and working towards containment. A hand crew continues to monitor and work on containing the 2-acre King Fire. During the night, inversions in the higher elevations may cause smoldering and produce smoke. The fire is expected to have minimal spread.

EAST SIDE OVERVIEW (ACRES/CONTAINMENT): Head (6,940 acres, 100%), Townsend (81 acres, 100%), Den (294 acres, 100%), Scott (1,886 acres, 100%), Lake (199, acres, 100%), King (2 acres, 0%)
Suppression repair work and patrol will continue on the east side of the Happy Camp Complex. Lingering smoke may still be present in some areas but does not pose major threats to the containment. On Friday, engines responded to smoke activity in the Den Fire and determined there was not a threat to the containment lines. All fires on the east side of the complex will be patrolled and observed daily by infrared flights to detect residual heat on the land.
