Defining Spike Camp
Updated On: 07/07/2023
When a crew’s commute to and from base camp to their assigned portion of a fireline becomes too long of a time commitment, the crew may “spike out.” This means they camp near the fire line in order to maximize the amount of work they can accomplish each day without the added travel time. They reach their designated spike camp either by helicopter, parachuting in (smoke jumpers), or by hiking into the remote location.

Not everyone assigned to a fire spends time on the fireline, swinging tools and driving engines. It takes a tremendous amount of support to pull off all the logistics, planning, and implementation of a suppression fire. Without the proper method to purchase supplies and pay the people who implement the work, the whole process would break down. Because of this, the finance unit is a critical section of an incident management team.
Fire managers choose between a variety of strategies when suppressing wildfires. While managing fires can be complicated and challenging, the basic principles of fire are relatively simple. Fire needs three elements to ignite and continue to burn: oxygen, heat, and fuel. To stop a fire's spread, one of the three elements has to be removed to break the fire triangle. Taking away the third component, fuel (burnable vegetation) is the method often employed by fire crews.

Weather, topography, and vegetation (fuels) are key influences on a fire. They determine fire behavior such as how fast a fire burns, how hot it burns, and whether the fire may produce and send embers.
