On right side of the image, a hand line can be seen moving upslope. It was constructed specifically as a control line for this burnout operation. Though it’s not visible in the photo, the hand line was supported by hoses and water.

Since fire moves more slowly downhill than up, this allows for a more controlled rate of spread and less intense fire.
