Fire

Favorable conditions have allowed suppression efforts to increase containment. The Anvil Fire is at 22,092 acres with 43% containment. The Flat Fire is at 34,242 acres with 88% containment. Scattered showers this afternoon will limit fire spread and increase humidity. Fire behavior will consist of smoldering and creeping, with large heavy fuels continuing to retain heat due to long-term dryness. Heat is isolated to areas with sheltered fuels, snags, stumps, and downed logs. Gusty winds are expected midday Tuesday through Wednesday morning.

Smoke

Overall, GOOD air quality has prevailed across the region. While smoldering and creeping fire activity continues, windy conditions have prevented smoke accumulation. Isolated showers and gusty winds will limit any significant new smoke production. Overnight drainage smoke will remain within valleys in the fire perimeter. Locations along Elk and Sixes Rivers will get brief light-to-moderate smoke from residual smoldering. Watch out conditions remain for limited roadway visibility due to fog and smoke from Humbug Mountain State Park to Bandon along HWY 101.

Breezy northeasterly winds continue through Monday, with isolated showers possibly Monday evening into Tuesday morning. Minimal fire behavior with creeping and smoldering is expected for both the Anvil and Flat Fires. Large heavy fuels will retain heat due to long-term dryness, while lighter fuels will be too moist to consume. Any remaining heat will be isolated to areas of shelters fuels, snags, stumps, and downed logs. No additional perimeter growth is expected at this time and containment will increase from ongoing suppression efforts.

Smoke

Smoldering and creeping will continue within the fire perimeter. Light daytime smoke is possible due to warming and drying coupled with breezy winds over the next few days. Winds will clear out valleys, sending brief periods of smoke to the southwest. Heaviest smoke impacts will be in the immediate vicinity of the fire in low-lying areas. Overnight, communities along the Elk and Sixes River drainages will have light-to-moderate residual smoke. Sixes, Port Orford, and Humbug Mountain will have light smoke impacts overnight to morning. Locations along HWY 101 from Humbug Mountain State Park to Langlois, watch out for early to late morning smoke and fog on roadways. Increasing drying and warming trends may increase visible smoke and overnight drainage smoke.

Significant precipitation over the last week allowed suppression efforts to increase containment. Smoldering will continue within the fire perimeter as isolated areas of heat (snags, stumps, logs, and sheltered fuels) will continue to consume. Limited fire spread and new growth is expected. Gusty winds are anticipated throughout Saturday. Warmer and drier conditions will begin today and increase throughout the forecast. Tactical efforts continue to secure the perimeter and control features ahead of warmer conditions that may enhance fire behavior.

Smoke

Smoldering will continue within the fire perimeter. Breezy northerly winds will clear out valleys, sending light smoke to the south. Heaviest smoke impacts will be in the immediate vicinity of the fire in low-lying areas. Overnight, communities along the Elk and Sixes River drainages will have light-to-moderate residual smoke. Sixes, Port Orford, and Humbug Mountain will have light smoke build in overnight to morning. By midday Sunday these areas will clear out and remain GOOD until late evening when overnight drainage smoke moves in. Locations along HWY 101 from Humbug Mountain State Park to Langlois, watch out for early to late morning smoke and fog on roadways. Increasing drying and warming trends may increase visible smoke bringing MODERATE to UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS air quality by late this coming week.
