Nighttime ignitions planned for Westshore Pile Burning Project
Related Incident: Mendocino NF 2023 RX Fire Projects
Publication Type: News
Fuels specialists on the Upper Lake Ranger District are planning ignitions on five acres of hand piles in the Westshore Project, Unit 8, at approximately 8pm on Thursday, April 13.
Cooler temperatures and higher relative humidity during nighttime offer an additional opportunity for fuels crews to burn piles. Forest staff are coordinating with local authorities for smoke monitoring. After ignitions, crews will mop up and patrol the prescribed burn area on Friday and through the weekend.
Some flames or smoke in the Lake Pillsbury basin may be noticeable. Visitors and residents should avoid areas where crews will be working.

April 12, 2023 - The San Bernardino National Forest (BDF) Mountaintop Ranger District will be conducting a prescribed pile burn today from 9:00am to 5:00pm as weather and environmental conditions allow. Winds are 4-5mph out of the south/southwest and carry the smoke away from the community of Baldwin Lake. Fuel moisture from the last several storms is supporting our efforts. With green grasses and shrubs, the ground fuels are proving resistant to fire spread. We want to thank the community of the Bear Valley for their continued support as we work to protect our public lands. There are approximately 70 acres planned and firefighters will be monitoring the area until all piles are extinguished.
Prescribed fire plays an important role in forest health and in reducing extreme wildfires and their negative impact. These fires also help reduce heavy fuel loads while simultaneously opening the conifer forest structure and maintaining the health of meadow habitats. Fire is also used to enhance native plant communities and cultural landscapes and improve wildlife habitats. Another goal is to provide defensible space for communities and developed areas within and surrounding the BDF. With all fire comes smoke, and the U.S. Forest Service work to mitigate smoke impacts from prescribed fires on the communities in the area.
