Camp Creek Fire Daily Update for Saturday September 16
Related Incident: Camp Creek Fire
Publication Type: News
September 16, 2023 Fire Update
Size: 2,055 acres
Containment: 51%
Total personnel: 480
Current Situation: The Camp Creek fire remains within established firelines where firefighters have been engaged in suppression actions to keep the fire as small as possible while providing for firefighter safety and protecting communities and the Bull Run watershed. There was an increase in fire activity yesterday which resulted in smoke that was visible from areas along the Highway 26 Corridor. This increased fire activity was primarily due to interior islands of unburned vegetation in the northwest portion of the fire. The interior burning was well within, and did not threaten, the established fireline. There was very little perimeter growth overall yesterday. Smoke will likely be visible again today as interior islands continue to burn out.
Representatives of the Incident Management Team shared fire information with the community at a Friday pop-up information briefing in Welches yesterday. They will also be stationed at the following locations today through Sunday to provide fire updates and answer questions:
- Saturday (9/16): Hoodland Thriftway in Welches, 1 – 5 p.m. & Jonsrud Viewpoint, 1 – 5 p.m.
- Sunday (9/17): Hoodland Thriftway in Welches, OR, 1 – 4 p.m. & Jonsrud Viewpoint, 1 – 4 p.m.
Today’s Activities: Today firefighters will continue holding the fire within established containment lines and mopping up to remove heat to improve security of the fireline. They will also continue chipping or hauling away vegetation debris created from fireline preparation. Along the eastern edge of the fire, where there continues to be minimal fire growth, crews are prepared to implement firing operations if needed, to secure the fireline. Aviation resources will be supporting operations with aerial reconnaissance and they remain poised to deliver water in support of operational needs.
Weather: Today will continue to be warm and dry though cooler and more moist air will start to arrive late in the afternoon. Cooler conditions will continue through the remainder of the weekend and in the beginning of the week. Little to no perimeter growth is anticipated with these weather conditions.
Smoke: Current smoke outlook: https://outlooks.wildlandfiresmoke.net/outlook/2c7a8f9b
Closures: Barlow Wayside Park and the Sandy Ridge Recreation Site are temporarily closed due to fire activity. Clackamas County residents can sign up at https://www.clackamas.us/dm/publicalerts to receive emergency alerts via email, phone, or text.
Restrictions: A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is issued over the fire area. It is illegal for the public to fly drones over or near wildfires because of the potential for accidents and disruption of suppression operations. Regardless of the fire, aircraft is not permitted to fly over the Bull Run watershed.

Northwest Team 6 is managing five fires in the area. In addition to the two fires listed in this update NW Team 6 is managing the Brice, Dinner, and Grizzly Fires further north on the Umpqua National Forest. A reconnaissance flight was done over all the fires yesterday to gain intel on where fire activity may have increased. There were some more active spots found, but overall fires have not grown significantly.
Chilcoot Fire: Size: 1,769 acres | Start Date: August 24, 2023 | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 60%
Yesterday, the fire put up a small smoke column on the southern flank due to dry conditions. Helicopters were able to assist ground crews and drop water over this hot spot throughout the day. In the north, crews identified a hot spot and were able to use hose lays and crews to bring water to it. Today, crews will continue extinguishing hot spots within 100 feet of the fire perimeter and work in coordination with aviation.
Ridge Fire: Size: 219 acres | Start Date: August 25, 2023 | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 95%
The Ridge Fire is now in patrol status with control lines completed around the fire, and minimal heat close to the lines. Yesterday, an Unstaffed Aerial System (UAS)/ Drone was flown over the fire using an infrared camera and no heat has been detected within 200 feet of the control lines. Two engines will remain ready to engage if fire activity increases. Fire personnel are confident in their control lines and that the fire will not spread outside of these lines.
Weather: Today will be slightly cooler than yesterday with highs in the 80s, but still warm and dry. Winds will remain light shifting from east in the morning to northwest in the afternoon. Ridgetops could experience gusts up to 18 mph in the afternoon. There will be haze from other regional fires today.
Smoke: Smoke outlooks are available at https://outlooks.wildlandfiresmoke.net/outlook/467b8c16?
Safety and Closures: There is a forest closure for portions of the Umpqua National Forest in response to fire activity in the area to protect public and wildland firefighter safety. A Closure Order for the Canton Creek area has been issued by Bureau of Land Management (BLM): Chilcoot Ridge Fire Emergency Closure Order BLM Roseburg District. There is a Temporary Flight Restriction over these fires.

Update Brice Creek Dinner and Grizzly Fires September 16 2023
Related Incident: Brice Creek FireDinner FireGrizzly Fire
Publication Type: News
Friday’s unseasonably warm and dry weather tested containment features on all three fires. Although there was a moderate amount of smoke visible Friday afternoon, its source was mostly from islands of unburned fuel well within the fire perimeters, the Grizzly Fire did grow about 25 acres. Crews working on the ground supported by aircraft were successful in preventing large scale growth on all three fires.
Brice Creek Fire: Size: 588 acres | Start Date: August 24, 2023, | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 55%
Yesterday, helicopters and scoopers made water drops in the southwest and northeast regions as hotspots surfaced due to the warmer and drier weather. Firefighters hiked south of Road 709 mopping up to bolster the fire line. Today, firefighters will continue to hold, secure, and mop up control lines. Helicopter bucket work is anticipated to address flare ups, and crews will work to complete contingency lines.
Dinner Fire: Size: 304 acres | Start Date: August 24, 2023, | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 95%
Engine crews patrolled the perimeter of the fire Friday to ensure that no smoke, hot spots or hazards having the potential to breach containment lines remain. A few areas of minor concern were located; additional crews will patrol and secure lines today to ensure that all threats to containment have been mitigated. Suppression repair will be ongoing.
Grizzly Fire: Size: 112 acres | Start Date: August 24, 2023, | Cause: Lightning | Containment: 0%
Yesterday, two scoopers and helicopters worked throughout the day dropping water on fire edge to slow fire growth. With assistance from aviation, the fire remained east of Champion Creek and south of Grizzly Creek. Scoopers were again requested for use today along with helicopters to help limit the fires spread in the very steep terrain. Structures are prepped, monitored and secured.
Weather: Warm and dry conditions will continue through the weekend with Saturday being only slightly cooler than Friday, temperatures down 3-4 degrees with humidity up 8-10%.
Evacuations: Lane County issued a Level 2 Evacuation (Be Set) for all private lands and mining claims in the Bohemia areas within the Cottage Grove Ranger District of the Umpqua National Forest.
Safety and Closures: Please remember to stay out of the fire area; this includes flying any unmanned aircraft (drones), if you fly we can’t. There is a forest closure for portions of the Umpqua National Forest in response to fire activity in the area to protect public and wildland firefighter safety. There is a Temporary Flight Restriction over the fire area.
