817 Morning Update Cameron Peak Fire

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

The Cameron Peak Fire has grown to 13,305 acres. No structures or facilities have been damaged. Crews have made good progress on preparing around structures throughout the area surrounding this full suppression fire. They have several more days of work ahead removing fuels and placing hoses, pumps, and sprinklers.

Today’s weather is expected to have highs in the mid-70s to 80 degrees. Winds will be out of the northeast at 5 to 15 mph, with relative humidity of 10 to 20%.

In the Long Draw area, crews completed some burnout operations to the east of Long Draw Road to reduce available fuels and potential for spotting to the west under easterly winds. If conditions are favorable, additional burnout operations will be conducted today on the north side of Highway 14, to keep pace with a finger of fire pushing to the southwest.

Crews are continuing to remove fuels along roads west of Crystal Lakes and Red Feather Lakes. The distance of these preparations from the existing fire front allows time for crews to complete preparation activities before the fire reaches this area. Once complete, these preparations will allow for burnout operations to the west before the fire advances toward those communities. Fuels and terrain between planned containment lines and the fire are too hazardous for firefighters to work.

Closures

Colorado Highway 14 is closed from Rustic to Gould. There is heavy fire traffic through the Poudre Canyon as crews access the fire area.

Larimer County has implemented mandatory and voluntary evacuation orders around the fire area, and a Forest closure remains in effect. The Forest has also elevated fire restrictions to Stage 2. Visit https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd781358.pdf to learn more.

816 Evening Update

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

The fire advanced on all fronts this afternoon, mostly along the Laramie River Road corridor. In Division W, one spot fire jumped across the Long Draw road, which crews quickly contained. They completed back firing operations along the east side of Long Draw Road to remove fuels and reduce potential for future spotting across the road with expected easterly winds this evening. In Division Z, the fire progressed southward toward Cameron Pass, as well as north toward West Branch. A Very Large Air Tanker was used to lay down retardant to slow the fire's advance northward. Crews are protecting structures and other values at risk on private lands in the Laramie River valley. Logging equipment has moved into the Red Feather Lakes area and working northward from that area. The structure group is monitoring the fire's progress eastward toward Sleeping Elephant and mitigating fuels around structures along Highway 14, in the Pingree Park area and in the Kinikinik and Arrowhead areas.

Cameron Peak Fire grows to 10867 acres no structures damaged

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

Summary:The Cameron Peak Fire has grown to 10,867 acres. No structures or campgrounds have been damaged. The fire crossed to the south side of Highway 14 in a second location yesterday, becoming established in heavy fuels between Barnes Meadow Reservoir and Long Draw Road.

Today’s weather is expected to have highs in the mid-80s. Winds will become easterly this afternoon, with higher relative humidity of 27%. While the increased humidity is expected to result in less intense fire behavior, winds out of the east will tend to push the fire to the west. Ground crews will focus primarily on protecting structures and removing nearby fuels, with support as needed from aerial resources. Heavy equipment will be used along Deadman and Pearl Beaver roads, clearing roadside vegetation to create fuel breaks for future containment lines. These indirect tactics are used when fire behavior is too extreme, creating unsafe conditions for firefighters to work directly along the fire line.

Closures

Current Conditions

The Ranch 2 Fire has burned 4,237 acres and is at 93% containment.  There has been no growth over the past 4 days and this is the final fire size.  Firefighters were able to complete the fire line on the western perimeter in rugged country yesterday.  Crews are working on cleaning up the fire line, back-hauling equipment and working on suppression repair.  The entire fire perimeter is in monitor status today.

Management of the Ranch 2 Fire will transition back to the Angeles National Forest and a smaller Type 3 team of Forest personnel will complete fire containment.  A Burned Area Emergency Response team will be arriving to assess the watershed and other resources and will make recommendations and develop plans to mitigate the damage caused by the fire.  Highway 39 will reopen today up to the East Fork Bridge.  Highway 39 will remain closed north of East Fork Bridge.  Glendora Ridge Road and Glendora Mountain Road are both open today.  We ask our public to stay out of the fire area to allow the land to recover.

Due to the good work of the firefighters, the Ranch 2 Fire did not turn into a large fire.  The rugged and steep terrain, the dry chaparral and very, very warm days made this an unusually challenging fire.  The fire management team wishes to thank the firefighters, support staff, California Conservation Crews and contractors that all kept this incident to 4,237 acres.

Unless there are significant changes, this will be the final update on the Ranch 2 Fire.

Helicopters: 2                                      Fixed Wing: 0             Water Tenders: 2

Current Conditions

Overnight, the Ranch 2 Fire continued to be quiet, with no increase in acreage.  The containment percentage has risen to 81 percent, and we expect that to increase again today.  All flanks of the fire appear to remain stable, with some crews staying on the mountain overnight so they can seek out any isolated areas of heat.  Yesterday evening the line on the western flank was tied in and will be patrolled and improved today. The north, east and southern portions of the fire are in a patrol and monitoring phase with mop up operations extending 200 feet into the burned area.

The western flank has been extremely challenging to firefighters as they still battle the consistent high temperatures and 35-45% slopes in some areas.  Now that the north and south ends of the fire-line on this side have been tied together, crews will extinguish all hot spots found in drainages and elsewhere. The rest of the fire perimeter remains static, although we continue to patrol these areas and back-haul hose, equipment and trash from the area.  Air operations will transport personnel to key areas and continue to support their operations through resupply, personnel shuttling, and air drops.

The incident commanders are pleased that there have been no injuries to civilians and thankful that there have been no major injuries to firefighters.  With the excessive heat over the last eleven days, there have been eight cases of heat related injuries and approximately fifty cases of poison oak affecting the firefighters.
