INCIDENT INFORMATION

Start Date: 08/13/2020                                          Size: 4,237 acres

Location: San Gabriel Canyon (Hwy 39)             Containment: 63%

North of Azusa, Los Angeles County, CA           Cause: Human-Caused, Suspected Arson

Assigned Resources

Hand Crew: 4                                     Engines: 7                   Dozers: 0         Total Personnel: 412

Helicopters: 3                                      Fixed Wing: 1             Water Tenders: 4

Current Conditions

Overnight, the Ranch 2 Fire continued to be quiet, with no increase in acreage.  The containment percentage has risen to 63 percent, and we expect that to increase again today.  All flanks of the fire appear to remain stable, with spiked crews working the rugged terrain to seek out any isolated areas of heat and extending our firelines.

Today, firefighters are focused on tying in the firebreaks on the western edge.  This flank has been extremely challenging, with the steep terrain and consistent heat from the weather.  The rest of the fire perimeter remains static, although we continue to patrol these areas, and back-haul our equipment and trash from the area.  There are still reports of scattered heat located deep in some drainages, but crews are confident they will not be a threat to the lines and will act on any areas that may become active.  Air operations will transport personnel to key areas and continue to support their operations through resupply, personnel shuttling, and air drops.

Tropical Storm Genevieve, located off the California coast, still has the potential to complicate our efforts on the fireline.  The National Weather Service has extended the flash flood watch for the San Gabriel and High Desert areas.  Although the likelihood of rain in the fire area is only predicted at 10 percent, our crews will need to remain vigilant to any changes.  Heavy debris flows resulting from heavy rain could affect trails on our lines, access roads, and communities near the bottom of the canyon drainages.

INCIDENT INFORMATION

Start Date: 08/13/2020                                          Size: 4,237 acres

Location: San Gabriel Canyon (Hwy 39)             Containment: 49%

North of Azusa, Los Angeles County, CA           Cause: Human-Caused, Suspected Arson

Assigned Resources

Hand Crew: 10                                   Engines: 8                   Dozers: 2         Total Personnel: 427

Helicopters: 5                                      Fixed Wing: 0             Water Tenders: 4

Current Conditions

The Ranch 2 Fire remained quiet last night with only a few glows in the western portion of the fire.  Those crews are continuing to mop-up while they reinforce and strengthen containment lines as the humidity rises in the area.  The fire perimeter is stable and there has been no growth in the last few days.  Crews assigned to the southern and eastern flanks are continuing their patrols and are monitoring those areas.  Crews working in the north continue to mop up and are backhauling hose, equipment and trash they come across.  On the western flank, firefighting crews have worked hard in rugged and steep terrain and have strengthened the line.  Since these firefighters have done great work and improved the line, some crews have been released and have been reassigned to fires burning elsewhere.  There have been eight cases of heat related injuries and approximately ten cases of poison oak affecting the firefighters. All of these firefighters have been treated and most have returned to work.  Only a few were hospitalized but all have been released.

As we transition from eight days of intense and excessive heat, the weather is quickly changing as a Flash Flood Warning has been issued from 11am to 9pm today.  Moisture and instability associated with dissipated tropical storm Genevieve will bring the potential for widespread showers and thunderstorms today.  These tropical thunderstorms could trigger flash flooding and mud and debris flows in the burn areas, onto Highway 39 and into the Mountain Cove community.  The incident meteorologist will be closely tracking radar and satellite reports and any updates from the National Weather Service.  Helicopters from this fire and the Lake Fire are ready to evacuate the crews off the fire line if Flash Flooding materializes.  In the meantime, personnel will continue working, reinforcing fire-lines and mitigating any hot spots near the perimeter.  Fire crews are backhauling hose, equipment and trash off the lines.  Over the last eight days, air operations have been extremely valuable to accomplishment all their missions while they continue to drop water, provide resupply, remove firefighters exposed to heat and poison oak and provide backhaul and mop-up support in all divisions.

Temperatures in the area will remain higher than average, but unstable weather will bring much higher humidity.  All crews have been briefed on the weather change and the potential for flash flooding which can cause mud and debris flows.

Current Conditions

The Ranch 2 Fire remained quiet last evening and has not been very active.  The fire perimeter appears to be stable and holding.  Crews assigned to the southern, eastern, and northern flanks are continuing their patrol, mop-up and firebreak reinforcement missions, looking for any concentrations of heat and strengthening the containment lines.  Although there are some reports of heat in the deeper drainage sections of the fire, particularly around the Pine Mountain region in the northwest shoulder, crews are confident that they are not a threat, and will continue to monitor and mitigate those areas as needed.  Line construction on the western flank is also moving along, although the heat and terrain remain challenging to the crews.  There have been eight cases of heat related injuries so far on the Ranch 2 fire. Four of the firefighters were able to return to work.  The others were hospitalized and released.

Over the next 24 hours, personnel will continue working, reinforcing our lines and mitigating any hot spots near the perimeter.  Crews will be building containment lines on the western edge of the fire between Fern Canyon and Cold Creek Canyon, and expect to tie that section in with the rest of our lines soon.  While these operations are ongoing, we have begun the process of backhauling equipment, hose, and trash off the lines in accordance with our policies.  Air operations have been quite valuable to the accomplishment of these missions, providing resupply, backhaul, and mop-up support to all divisions.

The weather service has extended the excessive heat warning through 2200 hrs.  Temperatures in the area remain higher than average, with temps ranging from 90-95 degrees.  Winds remain at 6-9 mph with gusts along the peaks around 18 mph.  Genevieve (now rated as a tropical storm), is predicted to remain on a northwest path, remaining off the shore of California.  Although it is not expected to affect our weather today, it may introduce some shifting winds and moisture to the area on Saturday & Sunday.

Helicopters: 4                                      Fixed Wing: 1             Water Tenders: 1

Current Conditions

In spite of rugged terrain and high heat, progress continues to be made on all flanks of the Ranch 2 fire.  The southern edges of the fire continue to show no activity.  Resources are still being vigilant and patrolling those areas to insure there are no unexpected flare-ups.  The eastern flank is also constantly patrolled with personnel to make sure there is no activity.  During the day and overnight, crews continued to reinforce our firebreaks along the northern edges of the fire and are conducting small firing operations near Pine Mountain to clean up fingers of unburned fuel along the line.

Over the next 24 hours, personnel will continue to mop up any hot spots along the northern edge of the fire perimeter, and proceed with their push to complete the firebreak line along the western flank of the fire between Fern Canyon and Cold Springs Canyon.  Once this line is sufficiently tied in with the rest of our perimeter, small firing operations may take place as needed to reinforce our position.  Operations in these areas continue to be supported by spiked crews, with equipment resupply being provided by helicopters.

Although we are expecting a termination of the excessive heat warning today, the temperatures in the area will continue to be above average for this time of year.  We are expecting temps from 93-97 degrees along all fronts of the fire perimeter.  Winds are predicted to be southwest from 6-9 mph with gusts along the peaks around 18 mph.  Hurricane Genevieve, located offshore near Baja California, is expected to introduce some additional clouds and moisture to the fire’s area in the near future.  Its’ impact on our operations is unknown at this time.  As mentioned before, steep terrain and dense fuels contribute to incident complexity for firefighters.

Current Conditions

The Ranch 2 Fire burned most actively to the northwest yesterday after the inversion lift. Fuels

continue to be critically dry with low moisture levels. Firefighters have been primarily focused on extending the containment lines on the north and west perimeters. Crews continue to hold the fire on the eastern perimeter as well. There was some growth on the fire last night and handcrews worked all night, making good progress to extend handlines on the western side of the fire.

For today’s actions, Dozers will be used to strengthen the northern fire line supported by retardant drops by air tankers and helicopters if the fire area is clear and visibility is good.  The crews that are spiked out on the western fire perimeter are building line to the north and are continuing to scout for strategic places to build line to the northwest of the fire.  Firefighters continue to work in difficult terrain.

Weather challenges for today include high temperatures up to 106 degrees, dry conditions, possible thunderstorms to the east that could cause strong and erratic wind gusts of up to 20 mph. The Excessive Heat Warning is still in place through 9 pm Thursday.  The steep and rugged terrain of the San Gabriel mountains along with the dense mixed chaparral fuels and grass complete the fuel-topography-weather conditions that make this a complex incident for firefighters.

Current Conditions

The Ranch 2 Fire burned most actively to the north yesterday and made it to Pine Mountain Peak but did not damage the repeaters on the peak. Firefighters have focused on extending the containment line from the eastern perimeter along the Silver Mountain Ridge up to Pine Mountain.  There was little growth on the fire last night.

For today’s actions, two fire crews will be flown in on the east side for an overnight assignment to strengthen the containment line on the east side.  Dozers will be used to strengthen the northern fire line today supported by retardant drops by air tankers and helicopters if the fire area is clear and visibility is good.  The crews that are spiked out on the western fire perimeter are building line to the north and are continuing to scout for strategic places to build line to the northwest of the fire.  Firefighters continue to mop up and backhaul trash and equipment on the southern boundary near the Mountain Cove community and there is little heat in this area.
