The Larimer County Sheriff HAS upgraded to Mandatory evacuations for the eastern side of Estes Park. This is a large area that has a north border of Devils Gulch Road, west border of MacGregor Avenue, south border of Pierson Mountain, and east borders of Highways 34 and 36. This will close Highway 34 at Sleepy Hollow Park, and close Highway 36 at approximately mile marker 8. Mandatory Evacuations have been ordered for residents and business occupants in the area due to immediate and imminent danger. Evacuate the area immediately and as quickly as possible. Do not delay leaving to gather belongings or make efforts to protect your home or business. Highways 34 and 36 will be open for you to leave town. A closure on those highways will be put in place once all citizens have been evacuated. 

Operations is reporting the following information as of Saturday, October 24 at 6 am.

Thompson Zone: Night operations is reporting that the fire is very active and making a run to the East. Winds are estimated at 60+ mph. Crews are in place on Bear Lake Road and will attempt to hold the fire west of the road.

Cameron Peak: There are no reports of increased activity.

Cameron Peak Fire Operational Update 2200 - 10/23/20:

Governor Jared Polis and Congressman Joe Nugese stopped by Incident Command this afternoon for a short briefing on the Cameron Peak and East Troublesome fires.

The weather prediction for the next few days has a lot of variation in it for our fire response area. The Red Flag Warning will be in effect tonight with temps actually increasing throughout the night. Relative Humidity levels will be a little lower in the 20-30% range, with winds gusting up to 45 mph. These conditions will persist overnight and into the morning before the cooler temperatures and higher humidity moves in on Saturday.

East Troublesome Fire Thompson Zone - Crews have been doing structure preparation near Kaley Cottage and Fern Lake as well as scouting possible options towards Bear Lake Road as holding features. Structure assessments are occurring in the YMCA and High Drive areas of Estes Park.

Cameron Peak Fire - Crews are continuing to make progress on containment lines along the Buckhorn/ 44H Road, the Otter Spot (east of CR27), and along the southern perimeter. Crews continue structure protection and strengthening lines in areas of The Retreat, Storm Mountain, and Cedar Park. As a result of the hard work of firefighters, maps will be updated to show containment in Division Y from CR27 west to just west of Sulzer Gulch.

East Troublesome Fire Moves Into Rocky Mountain National Park Both Sides Of Continental Divide

On Wednesday, October 21, the East Troublesome Fire ran approximately 18 miles before it moved into the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park, where rapid evacuations began for the Grand Lake community and park staff. There appears to be some structure loss on the west side of the park, but initial assessment indicates that it is minimal. At this time, we are unable to fully assess those impacts.

On the morning of Thursday, October 22, a heat signature from the National Weather Service was picked up in the Spruce Creek drainage, on the east side of the Continental Divide in Rocky Mountain National Park. The East Troublesome Fire had spotted approximately 1.5 miles from the head of Tonahutu Creek to the head of Spruce Creek. Low clouds contributed to the challenge of assessing where smoke was coming from. Park fire lookouts from near the Ute Trail along Trail Ridge Road were able to confirm a smoke column out of Spruce Creek. Due to the location of the fire in the lower Spruce Creek drainage and confluence of Forest Canyon, evacuations began for areas of Estes Park. Humidity levels yesterday greatly assisted in stopping the fire growth and it appears it has remained in that general location. It is in the same general area as the Fern Lake Fire of 2012.

On the west side of the park, resources were focused on continual life and safety priorities and ongoing evacuations from the night before. Numerous trees were down on the west side of Trail Ridge Road, north of the Green Mountain Trailhead, blocking that area as a means to evacuate on Wednesday night, October 21. Weather conditions on the west of the Continental Divide were very different than the east side yesterday, with low humidity and winds continuing to add to the fire growth. As of last night, the East Troublesome Fire had moved north of the Coyote Valley Trailhead.

The official name of the East Troublesome Fire East Zone has been changed to East Troublesome Fire Thompson Zone. This is the portion of the fire that spotted over the continental divide and is currently about a mile west of Cub Lake within Rocky Mountain National Park. The name was changed to better reflect the geographic location, but still refers to the same area of the East Troublesome Fire that the Rocky Mountain T1 Incident Management Team is managing.
