One of the objectives for the Incident Management Team assigned to the #WilliamsForkFireCO is to minimize fire impacts to the mining infrastructure in the fire area.  One of these is the Henderson Mine. 
  

The mine, which began operation in 1976, is located west of the town of Empire in the I-70 corridor.  It is one of North America’s largest producers of molybdenum, a metal used to strengthen steel.  By the end of 2010, the mine had produced one billion tons of molybdenum.  After extraction, the ore must be processed.  Working with environmental groups, the mine company decided to build the processing mill 15 miles to the west, near the Williams Fork valley.  This keeps the mill outside of the Clear Creek watershed, a primary water source for Denver. 
  

In order to get the ore from the mine to the mill, a 15 mile long tunnel and conveyor system was built under the Continental Divide.   In addition to locating the mill outside of an important watershed, the mine company also inventoried the flora and fauna in the Williams Fork valley to help monitor any long-term effects.   
 

Firefighters have successfully kept the fire away from these structures, meeting a key objective of the Incident Management Team. 

 New incident management team takes command of the Williams Fork Fire A transition from the Rocky Mountain Blue Type 2 Incident Management Team to a Type 3 team has now been completed. The current team is led by Incident Commander (IC) Colby Crawford and Deputy IC John Fry. Although current conditions are cool and wet on #williamsforkfireCO, a warming and drying trend is forecast through the weekend.

Summary:  Cooler temperatures and snow from the passing cold front have cooled fuels in the fire area resulting in minimal fire behavior.  Continued snow and cold will reduce the chance for growth of the fire through the weekend.  Fire managers are preparing to transfer command to a Type 3 organization Thursday evening.  Some resources will begin to transfer to other fires.

Yesterday, fire supervisors monitored the snow fall and associated fire activity.  Crews were staged and ready to respond, if needed, to any changes in fire behavior. There were no helicopter operations due to the weather.

Today will be another day of monitoring fire activity with possible rehabilitation work around the edge of the fire.  Helicopter operations will likely be limited, once again, due to weather.

“The recent snow has greatly reduced fire activity; however, there is a very real chance you will see smoke from within the fire area over the coming weeks as temperatures fluctuate,” said Michael Haydon, Incident Commander

Weather:  The forecast calls for cold temperatures and continuing snow through Thursday.  The high today will be in the mid 40s and a low near 30 degrees.  Temperatures will warm through the weekend.

 #WilliamsForkFireCO started just before the big game season, unfortunately for hunters. However, there remain multiple hunting units outside the closure area accessible for most hunters. Hunters with licenses restricted to just the closure area will be eligible for a refund of fees and restoration of points. Full details at this link.  

Fire is a natural part of the ecosystem and is beneficial to the wildlife. The fire reduces the thick underbrush and fallen logs from the forest floor. Over the next several years as the forest regenerates, the animals will relish the fresh green growth springing up in the burned area, and their numbers may even increase in that area. Eventually, the animals will return to their normal movements and habits as they were prior to the fire. So hunters don’t despair, there are still plenty of places to go, and the hunt could be even better in the years to come!

Summary: A cold front moving through the area today will bring snow and higher humidity.  Precipitation will cool hot areas and wet fuels, resulting in decreased fire activity throughout the day.  Helicopter operations may be shut down due to poor visibility caused by weather and smoke conditions. 

Yesterday, firelines along the St. Louis Creek and Crooked Creek roads were completed.  Helicopter water drops along the north and south edges of the fire prevented any significant spread.  Firefighters continued to monitor structure protection around the Bobtail Mine and Denver Water facilities.

Fire managers are closely monitoring fire behavior related to weather changes.  Firefighters will be staged to react, as needed, to any changes in fire behavior where it is safe for them to do so.

Weather: The forecast weather for today includes falling temperatures and widespread snow.  The high for today will be in the low 40’s with temperatures falling to the low 20’s by evening.  Windchill temperatures below zero will be a safety concern for fire managers.
