North Complex 8202020 AM UPDATE

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

Quincy, Calif. —  The California Incident Management Team 1 accepted management of the North Complex at 6 a.m., Thursday, August 20, 2020. The complex includes the Sheep, Claremont, Bear (41 acres) and other fires located on the Mt. Hough Ranger District on the Plumas National Forest. Each fire was caused by a lightning storm that swept through the area on the morning of August 17. Several other smaller fires ignited by that storm were contained and mop-up continues.

Ensuring the safety of emergency responders and the public is a primary objective of the team as it works to contain the wildfires within the complex.

The Plumas and Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, in consultation with its USFS partners, are continually evaluating the need for MANDATORY and ADVISORY evacuations.  Mandatory evacuations and advisory notices were issued yesterday out of an abundance of caution for the safety of residents potentially in line of the spreading fires. A MANDATORY evacuation order was issued for Quincy La Porte Road between Thompson Creek (6 miles south of Highway 70) to Red Bridge (8 miles south of Highway 70). Local deputies assisted residents with evacuations. Quincy La Porte Road is closed at the intersection with Highway 70 to non-essential traffic. Residents along Quincy La Porte Road between Thompson Creek and Highway 70 were also advised to evacuate to a safe location.

For immediate text notifications about emergency alerts, residents can sign up for the Plumas and Lassen County’s CodeRed Emergency Alert System. Evacuation questions should be directed to the your County Sheriff's office non-emergency number Plumas County Sheriff’s Office: (530) 283-6375; Lassen County Sheriff’s Office: (530) 257-6121

Weather: Smoke and wind remain the primary weather concerns for today with widespread air quality issues and fire weather concerns. Some cooling overnight will provide relief from the heat for the end of the week. After a couple dry days, thunderstorms will likely return to the eastern Sierra and western Nevada by Sunday and continue into early next week.

Fires remained active overnight.

The Claremont Fire is south of Quincy and north of Middle Fork Feather River and west of La Porte Road. The fire spread down to the La Porte Road last night. Firefighters protected structures due to spot fires that crossed a dozer line. They will continue to protect structures today in the area as well as continue to attack spot fires.

The Iron fire is located southwest of Taylorsville north of Emigrant Pass and west of China Grade Road. It is about 50 acres and in heavy timber fuel. Crews are building dozers and hand line today.

Firefighters will be focused on the large fires today as well as providing initial attack on any new fires that pop-up

Fire managers will employ tactics that safely engage fire while prioritizing firefighter and public safety and protecting values at risk. Life safety will always remain the number one priority. COVID-19 mitigations are being taken to limit exposure risks to firefighters and the public, per CDC guidelines.

Health Advisories: Smoke from fires in Northern California is drifting into the area today so a dense smoke advisory remains in effect. Widespread smoke and haze is expected to continue through at least Thursday night. For more information about the air quality in your area please visit https://gispub.epa.gov/airnow/

There are significant structure protection resources in place in that area and multiple crews, including one handcrew and multiple engines, are responding.
Hotter and drier conditions—in addition to gusty afternoon winds—contributed to greater fire intensity and challenged crews on the north edge of the Claremont Fire today.
