General Information: Yesterday evening, the Southern Cascades Type 3 Interagency Management Team assumed operational control of areas of the Lionshead Fire that impacted Willamette National Forest lands. Several fire crews previously stationed at the Lionshead incident command post have moved to the Beachie Creek incident command post in Salem, resulting in an increase of personnel.
Local fire crews are working with local recreation staff to address hazards around hiking trails inside and outside of the burn area, as well as those directly impacted by the wind event in September. This includes removal of hazard trees and erosion mitigation.
Fire managers and resource advisors are continuing to scout for opportunities to repair fire line and mitigate the effects of fire suppression on the landscape.
“We are going to continue to move forward with suppression repair, as well as focusing on fire fighter and public safety, which includes putting up gates and barriers to prevent access to unsafe areas” -Chris Mushrush, Incident Commander (trainee).
Although State Highway 22 is open for all vehicle traffic, drivers should be aware that there will be heavy traffic over the weekend with crews removing damaged trees and residents returning to their communities. The speed limit has been reduced to 40 mph between Gates to Pamelia Creek road and frequent delays are expected.
All evacuation levels have been lifted for Clackamas, Marion, and Linn counties.
Weather and Fire Behavior: Today there will be mild conditions. Temperatures will range from 53-60°F with northwest winds over the next 48 hours. There is a slight chance of rain mainly impacting higher elevations. There will be a higher chance of rain on Sunday, as well as an increase in wind. Fire behavior will remain minimal.
Even with decreased fire behavior, there are many hazards that exist in burn areas, such as ash pits that can contain hot embers that continue to smolder weeks or months after the wildfire event. Due to these hazards, a closure will likely remain in place for an extended period for public safety. Please see the following for closure information:

General Information: Fire managers with the Type 3 Incident Management Team are continuing to scout contingency line for opportunities to repair and mitigate the effects of fire suppression on the landscape. In addition to repairing fire lines, crews will be hard at work again today removing hazard trees, mitigating erosion, patrolling and mopping-up lingering hotspots.
Now that active suppression is no longer essential to the containment effort, many crews and resources have been released from the fire to work on incidents that have staffing and resource needs. Daily objectives are also being adjusted to reflect the shorter daylight hours in which crews can work.
State Highway 22 is open for all vehicle traffic. Crews with heavy equipment are still working along the highway to remove damaged trees and will be for some time. The speed limit has been reduced to 40 mph between Gates to Pamelia Creek road and frequent delays are expected. Traffic is likely to increase over the weekend.
All evacuations levels have been lifted for Marion and Linn counties.
Weather and Fire Behavior: Today temperatures will range from 55-65 degrees in the fire area and be slightly cooler above 4,000 feet. Winds will be light and flow to the northwest. There will be a slight chance of showers tonight and into tomorrow morning.
Even after a season-ending rain event, which brings enough precipitation to wet exposed fuels so thoroughly they are unlikely to burn, fire can remain underground for weeks and even months. Much like banking a fire in a fireplace or woodstove, hot coals can continue smoldering deep within the stumps and root systems without emitting smoke for long periods of time. The warmer temperatures over the next few days should not increase fire behavior.
Closures: Multiple forest and area closures remain in effect for the safety of firefighters and the public. For the most up to date information, see the following websites:

Beachie Creek Fire Quick Facts
Approximate Size: 193,573 acres
Containment: 80%
Total Personnel: 157
Start Date: August 16, 2020
Cause: Under Investigation
General Information: This will be the last update from Northwest Incident Management Team 8 (NWIMT8), with Incident Commander Kevin Stock. Two local Type 3 organizations will assume management on Thursday 10/15, at 7:00 am in the morning. Incident Commander Jonah Gladney will assume management of the Willamette National Forest and Bureau of Land Management lands of the Beachie Creek Fire. Incident Commander Jeremy Goers will assume management of the Mt. Hood National Forest and Bureau of Land Management lands of the Riverside Fire. All State and private lands protected by Oregon Department of Forestry will return to the North Cascade District for management.
NWIMT8 would like to take this opportunity to say “thank you” to the communities, cooperators, agency staff and firefighters for the unwavering support during our management of the Riverside and Beachie Creek Fires.
Field work on both the Beachie and Riverside Fires continues to be repairing of fire lines, patrolling and mop-up when conditions allow. Recent winds and rains can weaken trees, increasing the danger of them falling. There is a high interest from the public to use much of the fire area, but area closures are in place, which is necessary for the safety of firefighters and the public. Wet roads create unsafe driving and working conditions for all.
State Hwy 22 is now open, with reduced speed limits. Expect intermittent stops as mitigation work continues.
Weather and Fire Behavior: Light showers and winds are expected again today and will give way to higher pressure and more seasonal weather. Temperatures will rise and winds will subside over the next few days creating better conditions for firefighters to access the fire area and complete suppression repair work. The recent wet weather will keep fire behavior to limited creeping and smoldering. Wet conditions can make it difficult and unsafe for firefighters to continue fire suppression repair work.
Evacuations: Current evacuation information for: Marion County is available at www.co.marion.or.us/Alerts?AlertId=83 or by calling 503-588-5032, and for Linn County is available at www.linnsheriff.org/fire_live_updates_sept_2020/ or by calling 541-812-2260.
