The Evans Canyon Fire is located approximately 8 miles north of Naches, Washington. Yesterday’s wind event moved smoke from other fires across Central Washington into the Evans Canyon Fire area. Temperatures are cooler today, in the mid-70s in the valleys with east winds 10-14 mph gusting to 20 mph.

Yesterday’s Operations:

The predicted strong winds appeared yesterday afternoon, and control lines were tested and held. There was no increase in the size of the fire as a result of Monday’s historic wind event. Several new fires started across Central Washington yesterday, and some fire crews and resources were reassigned to these new fires. Firefighters from the Evans Canyon Fire also assisted with two new local fire starts.

Today’s Operations:

Northwest Team 12 will continue to demobilize resources to support other fires across the region and plans to transfer management of the Evans Canyon Fire back to the local unit of the Washington DNR within the next 48 hours. All divisions across the fire will be in mop-up and patrol status today. Remaining fire crews will also work on repair of suppression control lines. Firefighters will be available to respond if there are new fire starts in the local area.

Closures:

Highway 821 (Yakima Canyon Hwy), the Yakima River, boat ramps, and Yakima River Canyon campgrounds will open tomorrow at 6 AM. BBQ Flats and Wenas recreation areas along with parts of North Wenas Road, Sheep Company Road, Naches Wenas Road, and Longmire Road remain closed.

The Evans Canyon Fire is located approximately 8 miles north of Naches, Washington. Today there is a significant weather change, with winds increasing during the day and shifting to the northeast-east. There is a Red Flag Warning until 8 PM tonight for combined strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures that could contribute to the rapid spread of any new or ongoing fires. Temperatures are forecast in the mid-80s in the valleys with winds shifting to northeast-east at 15-20 mph, gusting to 35 mph by midday.

Yesterday’s Operations:

Dedicated work by fire crews resulted in another significant increase in containment, with the fire now 60% contained. Fire behavior was minimal, with some remaining vegetation burning along the western side of the Yakima River. Helicopters were used to extinguish an interior hot spot on the western side of the fire. A strike team of resources from the Evans Canyon Fire also responded to a reported smoke north of Ellensburg. Firefighters on the western and southwestern flank of the fire continued to secure control lines, along with ongoing mop-up and patrol around the fire perimeter.

Today’s Operations:

Due to the forecasted wind event today, there are two task forces with engines and dozers positioned and ready to quickly respond to any increase in fire behavior or new fire starts. Firefighters will be on alert, patrolling and monitoring the fire as the winds start shifting and increasing around noon.

Closures:

Parts of North Wenas Road, Sheep Company Road and Naches Wenas Road and Longmire Road are closed. Highway 821 (Yakima Canyon Highway), BBQ Flats and Wenas recreation areas are closed. The Yakima River, boat ramps, and Yakima River Canyon campgrounds remain closed.
