Containment: 35%

Cause: Under Investigation

Resources Assigned:

Total Personnel: 353

Crews: 6

Engines: 8

Water Tenders: 3

Heavy Equipment: 9

Helicopters: 3

Current Status & Planned Activity: Clearer air and more accurate mapping revealed actual fire acreage to be 1,276. The fire area received 0.2 inches of rain yesterday tempering fire behavior and growth; similar fire activity is expected today with heavy fuels continuing to creep and smolder. Additional containment was achieved along the south edge of the fire, bringing the total to 35%.

Today, firefighters will monitor and patrol the southeast part of the fire, extinguishing any remaining hot spots along the contained edge. Crews will continue to improve contingency line to the north by removing brush and vegetation along road 427. In the northwest area of the fire, crews will begin scouting for opportunities to construct line along the fire’s edge.

Weather: Temperatures will remain cool with highs in the low 50s and breezy west winds 12 to 20mph.

Closures: An area, trail and road closure order is in effect for National Forest System lands on the Three Rivers Ranger District, Kootenai National Forest. Road Closures include NFSR 427 (Callahan Creek Road) from the junction with NFSR 4478 (Ruby Three Mile Road); NFSR 14390 (Snowstorm Road); NFSR 414 (South Fork Callahan Creek Road); NFSR 4554 (Goat Creek Road); NFSR 4530 (Smith Mountain Road); and NFSR 4541 (Glad Creek Road). Containment: 10%

Cause: Under Investigation

Resources Assigned:

Total Personnel: 338

Crews: 6

Engines: 10

Water Tenders: 2

Heavy Equipment: 9

Helicopters: 3

Current Status & Planned Activity:
Containment has reached 10% as crews and engines successfully cooled the fire’s edge to the north of road 4541 on the south end of the fire. Firefighters will take advantage of the cooler, wet weather to work directly on the fire’s edge to complete more containment line.

Minimal fire growth is expected over the next couple days with heat holding in the duff and heavy fuels and very little movement. Firefighters will continue to build line to secure the 8 acre spot to the east. Building line consists of clearing the line with a chainsaw, digging down to mineral soil and laying hose.

Potential fire lines to the north and east will continue to be cleared using heavy equipment followed by handcrews.

Weather: Temperatures will be cooler today with highs in the 50s and a 60% chance of a wetting rain.

Closures: An area, trail and road closure order is in effect for National Forest System lands on the Three Rivers Ranger District, Kootenai National Forest. Road Closures include NFSR 427 (Callahan Creek Road) from the junction with NFSR 4478 (Ruby Three Mile Road); NFSR 14390 (Snowstorm Road); NFSR 414 (South Fork Callahan Creek Road); NFSR 4554 (Goat Creek Road); NFSR 4530 (Smith Mountain Road); and NFSR 4541 (Glad Creek Road). Incident Statistics:

Size: 1,676 acres

Containment: 0%

Cause: Under Investigation

Resources Assigned:

Total Personnel: 316

Crews: 5

Engines: 10

Water Tenders: 3

Heavy Equipment: 9

Helicopters: 3

Current Status & Planned Activity: Fire activity was moderate yesterday with active surface fire producing three to four foot flame lengths in heavier fuels and occasional single tree torching. While the dry fuels continued to burn, the slow rate of fire spread allowed firefighters to engage the fire directly in some areas.

Yesterday, engines and crews maintained hose lays and monitored the fire on the south end, successfully holding the fire north of road 4541 and trail 154. A hot shot crew sawed a line around the spot fire to the east while helicopters provided water bucket drops in an attempt to keep the spot fire from spreading.

Crews and heavy equipment will continue to improve potential fire lines north of the fire. Where safe and feasible, firefighters will engage the fire directly, working against the fire edge to build containment line.

Weather: Today’s weather will be similar to yesterday with mild temperatures and light winds over the fire area. Rain is forecasted tonight through Saturday with lower temperatures and gusty winds.

Closures: An area, trail and road closure order is in effect for National Forest System lands on the Three Rivers Ranger District, Kootenai National Forest. Road Closures include NFSR 427 (Callahan Creek Road) from the junction with NFSR 4478 (Ruby Three Mile Road); NFSR 14390 (Snowstorm Road); NFSR 414 (South Fork Callahan Creek Road); NFSR 4554 (Goat Creek Road); NFSR 4530 (Smith Mountain Road); and NFSR 4541 (Glad Creek Road). Riverside Fire Update for 10212020

Related Incident:
Publication Type: News

General Information:  On October 16, 2020 the Type 3 Incident Management Team for the Riverside fire also took command of the Mount Hood National Forest portion of the Lionshead Fire. Personnel on both incidents will continue suppression repair efforts for the protection of watersheds and fisheries, as well as with hazard mitigation efforts so Forest areas roads can be opened safely.

Safety of the public and those working in the burn area continues to be the top priority. We ask that the public please respect road and forest closures until hazard mitigation efforts are complete.

Riverside Fire: Oregon Department of Transportation continues to work to remove fire weakened trees and loose rock that would threaten motorists traveling along Hwy 224. Portland General Electric is also working along the roads to mitigate hazard trees that pose a threat to the power infrastructure. Planning for hazard tree mitigation along roads maintained by the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management is being finalized and should begin next week.

Weather and Fire Behavior:  Evening & overnight temperatures are forecasted to drop into the 30s this week, even colder temperatures are forecasted for the weekend. In addition to the colder temperatures, expect rain and mountain snow to affect the region late Friday into Saturday with snow levels falling to 1400 ft. Falling temperatures, frost and forecasted snow in the higher elevations will assist in suppression efforts on the fire. Winds may become gusty this weekend over the western gorge and along the Cascade peaks, increasing hazard tree dangers in the closure area.

Closures: Multiple forest and area closures remain in effect for the safety of firefighters and the public.  It is illegal to violate Forest closures or bypass road closure barricades. For the most up to date information, see the following websites:

Riverside Fire Update for October 10, 2020

General Information: A Type 3 Fire Management Team took command of the Riverside fire yesterday and will continue with suppression repair efforts to protect watersheds and fisheries, and with hazard mitigation efforts so Forest roads can be opened as quickly and as safely as possible.

Oregon Department of Transportation continues to work to remove fire weakened trees and loose rock that would threaten motorists traveling along Hwy 224. Portland General Electric is also working along the roads to mitigate hazard trees that pose a threat to the power infrastructure. Planning for hazard tree mitigation along roads maintained by the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management is being finalized and should begin next week.

Weather and Fire Behavior:  Today temperatures will range from 55-65 degrees in the fire area and be slightly cooler above 4,000 feet. Winds will be light and flow to the northwest. There will be a slight chance of showers tonight and into tomorrow morning.
Even after a season-ending rain event, which brings enough precipitation to wet exposed fuels so thoroughly they are unlikely to burn, fire can remain underground for weeks and even months. Much like banking a fire in a fireplace or woodstove, hot coals can continue smoldering deep within the stumps and root systems without emitting smoke for long periods of time. The warmer temperatures over the next few days should not increase fire behavior.
Closures: Multiple forest and area closures remain in effect for the safety of firefighters and the public.  For the most up to date information, see the following websites:
