The Shasta McCloud Management Unit plans to continue hand pile burning outside of Mt. Shasta City described below.

Project Name: Gateway Legal Location: T40N, R4W, s 3 Descriptive Location: North of Mt. Shasta City Type of burn: hand piles Total Acreage: 0.5 Planned Ignition: January 21 & 22, 2021 Duration of Ignition and Smoke Production: 1-2 days of ignition. 1 additional day of burn down Estimated Direction of Smoke Travel: North / Northeast Communities or Smoke Sensitive Areas: Smoke may be visible from Mt. Shasta City. No impacts anticipated.

The South Fork Management Unit plans to continue the pile burning in the Hyampom Units described below.

Project Name:  TPFHRS – Hyampom Units 8 & 9 Legal Location:  T3N R7E Sec 6 (Unit 8 & 9) Lat/Long: 40 40.316, -123 25.76 Descriptive Location:  5N60 road, north of Hyampom Type of burn:  HAND PILES Total Acreage:  47 ACRES (Unit 8: 21; Unit 9: 26) Planned Ignition:  1/21/21 – 1/23/21 Duration of Ignition and Smoke Production:  1- 3 days. Light smoke production could last an additional 2 - 3 days.   Estimated Direction of Smoke Travel:  NE/E/SE Communities or Smoke Sensitive Areas:  The community of Hyampom is roughly 2 miles to the south
 
The Trinity River Management Unit plans to continue the pile burning in the Denny Area 
 
6 acres in the Trinity Post Fire Hazard Reduction prescribed fire project, total project size is 299 acres and plan is to complete up to 50 acres/day over 6 week time period in Jan/Feb 2021
 
The Shasta Lake Ranger District plans to continue pile burning in Jones Valley/Silverthorne area near Shasta Lake

South Fork Management Unit prescribed burning projects continue this week

The South Fork Management Unit of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest is continuing its prescribed burning program during the second week of January. Areas planned for vegetation treatment projects include:

  • Trinity Post Fire Hazard Reduction Pile Rx – 75 acres roadside hand piles along Forest Road 5N60, approximately 2 miles north of Hyampom.

  • Reforestation Site Prep Pile Rx – 43 acres, located west of Blue Point Ridge, along roads 29N68 and 30N28, approximately 1 mile south of Post Mountain. The focus of this project is burning reforestation site prep hand piles in plantations burned in the 2015 Blue Fire. The plantations will be replanted in the spring.

Prescribed fire is an important tool for the Forest’s mission to reduce build-up of hazardous fuels, restore forest ecosystems and improve safety of communities within the wildland urban interface. These projects are conducted in accordance with an approved burn plan to ensure the safety of people and property in the area. Burn plans describe the specific conditions under which burns will be conducted including the weather, number of personnel and opportunities to minimize smoke impacts.

Pre-ignition public notifications will be provided to local media outlets and will also be posted on InciWeb https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/7268, Facebook www.facebook.com/ShastaTrinityNF, and Twitter www.twitter.com/ShastaTrinityNF. Residents and visitors are asked to avoid areas where prescribed burns are being conducted. Some smoke may be visible. People should not be alarmed; the fires will be carefully monitored. Local fire and government authorities will be notified prior to burn days and kept informed throughout burning operations.

The Shasta McCloud Management Unit of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest is continuing its prescribed burning program during the first week of January.

Areas planned for vegetation treatment projects include:

  • McBride South, located north and east of Mt. Shasta along Everitt Memorial Hwy, 7 acres pile burn, estimated direction of smoke travel: northeast

  • Mountain Thin, located at Snowman’s Hill: North of Hwy 89, East of Ski Park Hwy, 61 acres pile burn, estimated direction of smoke travel: north

  • Azalea, located near Hwy 89, just east of I-5, 1 acre pile burn, estimated direction of smoke travel: south

Smoke will be visible from Mt. Shasta City, Hwy 89, Everitt Memorial Highway and Ski Park Highway.

Bear Mountain hazardous fuels reductionprescribed fire project January 6

The Shasta-Trinity National Forest will continue fuels reduction activities on the Bear Mountain hazardous fuels reduction project near Shasta Lake north of Jones Valley starting January 6, 2021. Fire crews will hand ignite these burn piles when conditions are favorable, completing up to 40 acres over the next several weeks.

These projects are conducted in accordance with an approved burn plan to ensure the safety of people and property in the area. Burn plans describe the specific conditions under which burns will be conducted including the weather, number of personnel and opportunities to minimize smoke impacts. Actual project initiation dates will depend upon local weather and fuel conditions.

Smoke will be visible from areas near Jones Valley and Silverthorne on the east side Shasta Lake.  Residual smoke may be visible for several days and project managers will be working with the Air Quality Management Board to ensure compliance with air quality regulations and health and safety conditions.

The main goals of these prescribed fire projects are to reduce the severity of future wildfires and to provide added protection for communities in the wildland urban interface. In addition, prescribed burns promote a diverse and more resilient forest and improve habitat for wildlife.

Trinity Post Fire Hazard Reduction prescribed fire project begins Jan 6

The Trinity River Management Unit is planning to conduct hand pile burning starting January 6, 2021 along County Road 402 to reduce hazard fuel build-up on National Forest System lands in the area of Denny, California.

Fire crews will hand ignite these burn piles when conditions are favorable, completing up to 50 acres per week. The total project size is 299 acres and will take up to six weeks to complete.

Fire managers are working with North Coast Unified Air Quality Management District to ensure compliance with air quality regulations and health and safety conditions. The prescribed fire will create smoke that may be visible from many areas in Denny, Hawkins Bar and Burnt Ranch. Smoke production will begin around 10 a.m. each day and continue through late afternoon.  Drivers should be alert for smoke and potential debris on the roadway. 

The goal of this project is to reduce live and dead standing vegetation and surface fuel accumulation caused from past wildfires to provide safer access and egress to the public and firefighters.  Additionally, firefighters are creating areas where they can more effectively engage and suppress wildfires to help protect communities and the public.

Rail Prescribed Fire Project Burn Piles December 18 2020 South of Hayfork

The pile burning in the Trinity Post-fire Hazard Reduction & Salvage (TPFHRS) project has been continuing on schedule. Crews plan to continue hand pile ignitions in the TPFHRS project Friday 12/18. This is the last planned day of ignition until after the holidays.

  • Total Acreage:  22 ACRES (Rail 1: 3.7 ac, Rail 2: 12.1 ac, Rail 5: 6.1 ac)
  • Planned Ignition:  12/18/20
  • Duration of Ignition and Smoke Production:  1 day. Light smoke production could last an additional 2 days.  
  • Estimated Direction of Smoke Travel:  S/SE
  • Communities or Smoke Sensitive Areas:  Hayfork is roughly 2 miles to the North, but smoke travel is anticipated to be away from town toward the S/SE

Fuel reduction/prescribed fire project continues

REDDING, Calif. — The Shasta-Trinity National Forest will soon continue fuels reduction activities near the Silverthorn area on Shasta Lake north of Jones Valley. The main goals of the Bear Mountain project are to reduce the severity of future wildfires and provide added protection for communities in the wildland urban interface. The project includes approximately 411 acres of prescribed fire underburn operations. 

 

Project managers are anticipating implementation of the prescribed fire project starting as early as Friday December 11, 2020 depending on weather parameters. Actual project initiation dates will depend upon local weather and fuel conditions. These projects are conducted in accordance with an approved burn plan to ensure the safety of people and property in the area. Burn plans describe the specific conditions under which burns will be conducted including the weather, number of personnel and opportunities to minimize smoke impacts.

 

Smoke will be visible from many areas around Shasta Lake, along Interstate 5 near Bridge Bay and along 299 east near Bella Vista and Jones Valley.  Residual smoke may be visible for several days and project managers will be working with the Air Quality Management Board to ensure compliance with air quality regulations and health and safety conditions.

Harris prescribed fire projects November 22 24 2020

The Harris Project on the Shasta McCloud Management Unit will be burning November 22 through 24th.  Smoke may be visible though is not expected to impact communities in the area. Smoke may remain for several days after ignition.

The project is located near the Harris Spring Guard Station and consists of 100 acres of machine piles and 2 acres of landings piles.
