Firefighters have been focused on pile burning throughout the Klamath National Forest since the arrival of wintry conditions last fall. Thousands of piles over hundreds of acres have been burned over the last few months around communities such as Happy Camp, Seiad, Horse Creek, Klamath River, the Elk Creek and O’Neil Creek areas, and Yreka. Additional pile burning has been done in other project areas across the Forest.
This week, if conditions allow, fire managers will be burning hand piles in the Gottville area. These piles were created to reduce hazardous fuels created by the West Side Recovery Project and are located within the 2014 Beaver Fire. The project is part of an effort to reduce fuels around the wildland urban interface to improve firefighter and public safety during future wildfire events, as well as to reduce the likelihood of high severity fire in the area.
160 acres of piles are identified to be burned in the coming days near Gottvile, many of which are adjacent to Highway 96. For the safety of firefighters and the public, motorists are asked to obey traffic control signs and exercise extra caution in areas of smoke, including reducing speeds and turning on headlights.
As long as conditions remain favorable, pile burning will continue across the Klamath National Forest.
The Salmon and Scott River Ranger District will continue to burn up to 200 additional acres of hand piles in the Greenhorn Creek area, within the Craggy Project, which was designed to reduce the threat of wildfire to Yreka and surrounding communities. Additional pile burning is planned for the Incline Ridge area, upriver from Sawyers Bar.
On the Happy Camp/Oak Knoll Ranger District, fire crews will continue burning piles in the Beaver Creek drainage as long as conditions allow. Pile burning will continue in the O’Neil Gulch project in the vicinity of Horse Creek; the Buckhorn Salvage project in the area of Buckhorn Mountain; and the Gulch Project, also in the Horse Creek area.
In addition to the listed projects, numerous miscellaneous piles are scattered across the Klamath National Forest from ongoing projects. Visitors to the Klamath National Forest may see smoke from these projects over the course of the winter. Although pile burning only occurs on days that allow for good smoke dispersion, residual smoke may be noticeable for a few days following ignition.
