Muddy Slide Fire Daily Facts

Thursday, July 8, 2021 7:00 am

Current Situation

·     At 6:00 pm on Monday, July 5, Great Basin Team 2 (Type 3) assumed command of the Muddy Slide Fire.

·     This fire is expected to be a long-duration event, and additional resources will be made available as they are needed, depending upon fire activity.

·     Areas of heat were identified in the northwest corner of the fire. Firefighters have been able to work near the fire’s edge to cool hot spots in this area. Expect

Operational plan for today

·     On the north and west side of the fire, operations will continue to patrol and monitor status with an emphasis on locating areas of heat and conducting mop up as needed. Hot shot crews have been working direct along the north-west edge of the fire line as helicopters continue to drop water on hot areas along the north end of the fire. An increase in medical units is present for firefighter safety. With any tactical decision, firefighter protection remains our number one concern.

·     On the south side of the fire, heavy equipment will be used to remove fuels and secure fire lines. This will provide a safe site for any potential burnout operations, should future conditions allow.

  County Fire Restrictions

·     Stage 2 Fire Restrictions are in effect in Routt County. For details, see https://www.co.routt.co.us/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=439

National Forest Road Closures and Fire Restrictions

There is still an area closure around the fire. Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are in effect on the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland. Fireworks are always illegal on federally- managed public lands. For current forest closure and restriction information, see https://www.fs.usda.gov/detailfull/mbr/alerts-notices/?cid=stelprdb5139680&width=full

Fire Conditions and Weather

•    Hot and dry conditions will persist; winds will increase after 0900

to 5-10 mph out of the west, with gusts up to 20 mph. Isolated

showers and thunderstorms are predicted in the later afternoon

which may bring gusty and erratic winds that could produce

      areas of smoke.

There is a potential for hidden pockets of heat to become more active until thunderstorms arrive late morning. Temperatures will initially warm to the upper 70s. Humidity levels will decrease in the morning until late morning when thunderstorms will develop. Several rounds of thunderstorms are expected into the evening to possibly include hail, lightning, and heavy rain.

Current Situation

·     Happy Fourth of July! As you celebrate this holiday, take the time to ensure your home and family are prepared for future wildfires by learning what you can do to mitigate risk on you property.

·     A type three incident management team has arrived and will shadow the current incident management team before taking over command of the Muddy Slide Fire on Monday evening.

·     With the expectation of this being a long-duration fire, the weather today will cause a minimal increase in smoldering fire activity. There is a potential for hidden pockets of heat to become more active. The greatest risk for increased fire activity is along the north side of the fire that has received less moisture than the rest of the fire area.

Operational plan for today

·     On the west side of the fire, operations will continue to be in a patrol and monitor status with an emphasis on locating hotspots and conducting mop up as needed. Additionally, wood chippers will be used to clean up previously removed vegetation to reduce the risk of future fuels.

·     On the south side of the fire, heavy equipment will continue to operate and remove fuels to secure fire lines. This will provide a safe site for a possible future burnout operation, should conditions allow.

 Current Situation

·     A type three organization will arrive today and shadow the current incident management team for the next two days before taking over management of the Muddy Slide Fire on Monday evening. Due to the expectation of this being a long-duration fire, firefighting resources will be able to respond appropriately should fire activity increase over the coming weeks and months.

·     While the rain slows the spread of fire, it usually does not extinguish long burning fuels such as large logs and downed trees. Much of what is currently burning inside the fire perimeter is heavy dead timber, causing heat to remain built up even with rain. Thunderstorms also bring the risk of lighting and increased winds that pose a safety threat to firefighters.

Operational plan for today

·     On the south side of the fire, work will continue to be completed by heavy equipment and hand crews. When terrain becomes unsafe for heavy equipment to operate, hand crews will continue to remove fuels along the fire line.

·     Hose lines will continue to be enhanced within secured fire lines to prepare for successful use in future operations. Cold trailing continues to eliminate hot spots on the perimeter of the fire.

Evacuations

·     The Routt County Sheriff’s Office has lifted all evacuation notices for the Muddy Slide Fire.

 Current Situation

  • As containment increases, the complexity of the incident decreases, which allows agency administrators to look at transitioning to a smaller team to continue firefighting suppression activities. The long-term plan for the Muddy Slide Fire allows fire managers to bring in additional resources should fire activity increase over the coming weeks.
  • Thunderstorms have been a mixed blessing. While the rain slows the spread of fire, it usually does not extinguish long burning fuels such as large logs and downed trees. Thunderstorms also bring the risk of lighting and increased winds that pose a safety threat to firefighters.

Operational plan for today

  • On the south side of the fire, work being completed by feller bunchers and dozers will extend containment lines until terrain requires the work of hand crews.
  • Hose lines will be enhanced to prepare for successful use in future operations while cold trailing continues to eliminate hot spots on the perimeter of the fire.

Evacuations

Structure damage assessments

  • The Routt County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for structure damage assessments. The Sheriff will report that information when confirmed.

Management

Rocky Mountain Area Type 2 Incident Management Team Blue

Current Situation

·     The Muddy Slide Fire remains a full suppression fire. One of the main objectives of the firefighting effort is to contain the spread of fire and eliminate remaining heat sources, where safe and likely to be successful.

·     The continued cooler weather is allowing crews to strengthen containment features and prepare for hotter, drier conditions in the days to come.

·     Containment is currently at 28%. This number will continue to rise as crews and fire managers determine fire lines can reasonably be expected to stop the spread of the fire.

Operational plan for today

·     Fire hoses and pumps that have been placed near the northern perimeter of the fire will be tested and improvements made as needed.

·     Heavy equipment will continue to improve the fire line along the southern edge, along with support from hand crews where terrain precludes dozers.

·     Cold trailing operations will continue. This involves inspecting a partly cooled fire edge, feeling for heat with the back of the hand and eliminating any hot spots with additional water.

·     With additional containment reached in the Muddy Slide area, the Muddy Slide Fire is now 21 % contained. As more work is completed by heavy equipment on the southern side of the fire area, fire managers may increase the amount of containment reached.

·     As fire managers develop a plan for managing the Muddy Slide Fire as a long duration event, the public can expect to see smoke within the fire area as temperatures increase and vegetation dries out following recent moisture.

Operational plan for today

·     Fire crews will patrol the southern and eastern edges of the fire area to remove sources of heat and improve fire lines.

·     Dozers, masticators, and other logging equipment will continue being used to improve fire lines along the power line corridor.

 Current Situation

·     The Muddy Slide Fire has reached 14 % containment; the area of containment is located along County Road 16 on the eastern side of the fire as well as in the area of the Muddy Slide. Once newly constructed fire lines are tested by increased temperatures and winds, fire managers may increase the amount of containment reached.

·     Recent precipitation continues to reduce fire behavior, allowing time for fire managers to develop a plan for handling the Muddy Slide Fire as a long duration event.

Operational plan for today

·     Fire crews will continue preparing indirect fire lines along the northern perimeter of the fire for possible future burnout operations, which would lessen the chance of fire spread to the north.

·     Crews will continue removing heat sources around structures along County Road 16 and scout areas to the east to identify where contingency fire lines may be created as needed.
