Management

Great Basin Team 2, Type 3 Incident Management Team

·     At 6:00 pm on Monday, July 5, Great Basin Team 2 (Type 3) assumed command of the Muddy Slide Fire.

·     This fire is expected to be a long-duration event, and additional resources will be made available as they are needed, depending upon fire activity.

·     Areas of heat were identified in the northwest corner of the fire. Firefighters have been able to work near the fire’s edge to cool hot spots in this area. The weekend may bring a drying trend starting today and increase through the weekend with temps being in the low to mid 80s.

Operational plan for today

·     This will be your last update from Great Basin Team 2. The Rocky Mountain Black Team will assume command at 0600 on Sunday, July 18. With crews consistently patrolling the north end of the fire and the moisture in the last week, the fire is now 70% contained. There will be crews working on the north edge of the fire in Muddy and Clear Creek with frequent helicopter water drops in the heated areas keeping spot fires to a minimum. A Multi-Mission Aircraft (MMA) will continue to take infrared photos of the fire identifying hot spots in the north-west edge of the fire. Scattered thunderstorms and showers are expected to return in the afternoon on Saturday and will bring west winds that can produce gusts up to 16 mph. Gusty outflows and lightning are the main concern, especially if storms are dry. Smoke from isolated and dormant heat may materialize. On the south side of the fire, heavy equipment will be used to remove fuels and secure fire lines.

County Fire Restrictions

·     Stage 2 Fire Restrictions are in effect in Routt County. For details, see https://www.co.routt.co.us/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=439

National Forest Road Closures and Fire Restrictions

·     There is still an area closure around the fire. Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are in effect on the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland. Fireworks are always illegal on federally- managed public lands. For current forest closure and restriction information, see https://www.fs.usda.gov/detailfull/mbr/alerts-notices/?cid=stelprdb5139680&width=full

Fire Conditions and Weather

•    Scattered thunderstorms forecasted may bring moisture and lightning to

the area. Gusty outflow winds around cells may increase fire behavior

along uncontrolled fireline and green islands. Isolated tree torching and

spotting very likely if thunderstorms are dry. Another concern will be

lightning in or near the fire area causing new starts and exhausting

      Incident and local resources.

Operational plan for today

·     Crews will continue to work around the fires edge on the west side of the fire as weather permits. Equipment continues to make indirect line improvements while securing the line around the uncontrolled fire line with hand crews, going direct when its safe. The previous days rain was measured with a remote automated weather station on the northwest of the fire with a total of .13 inches. With continued moisture in the forecast, it will help cool hot spots on the north end of the fire, and around Muddy and Clear Creek. Helicopters will continue to drop water on the heated areas as well keeping spot fires to a minimum.

·     On the south side of the fire, heavy equipment will be used to remove fuels and secure fire lines. This will provide a safe site for any potential burnout operations, should future conditions allow.
