Description: At about 3:00 pm today, a wildfire was detected approximately one mile southwest of Lake Two, in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) on the Kawishiwi Ranger District of the Superior National Forest. The fire is located west of Rock Island Lake and approximately 16 miles east of Ely, MN. The fire is believed to be caused by a lightning strike.
Current Status: An air tanker and helicopter are currently making water drops on the fire to slow fire spread. All sides of the fire are active, but the water drops are successfully reducing fire activity. The fire is estimated to be 1.5 acres in size. A crew of firefighters has been flown into Lake Two to camp tonight. This will allow for an early start into the fire tomorrow.
Planned Actions: The firefighters on Lake Two will start early tomorrow morning to assess access routes and safety zones. Aircraft will continue to make water drops to reduce fire activity. The safety of firefighters is the highest priority as fire suppression actions on the ground are taken.
The weather forecast for Thursday, July 1 includes a temperature of 78 degrees, minimum humidity of 40%, and east winds 2-6 mph with gusts up to 14 mph.

Current Status: Yesterday afternoon and evening, aircraft made water drops on the fire to slow fire spread. All sides of the fire were active, but the water drops were successful in reducing fire activity. The fire was estimated to be 1.5 acres in size and the fire has not grown as of this morning. A crew of six firefighters were flown into Lake Two last evening.
Planned Actions: An additional four firefighters were flown in this morning. The firefighters will be cutting an access line to the fire and will be taking suppression action on the fire’s edge using pumps and water hoses. Aircraft will be used for aerial water drops as needed. The safety of firefighters is the highest priority as fire suppression actions on the ground are taken.
The weather forecast for Thursday, July 1 includes a temperature of 79 degrees, minimum humidity of 40%, and east winds 5-7 mph with gusts up to 15 mph.

Shasta-Trinity National Forest, July 12, 2021 — The Salt Fire remains at 12,650 acres with 85% containment. Just over 500 fire personnel continue working on the Salt Fire and within affected communities. Nightly infrared flights over the fire have not located any significant areas of heat. Areas of lingering smoke within the fire are visible, however, the perimeter of the fire remains stable with no growth over the past few days. Firefighters are continuing to monitor containment lines while they conduct suppression and repair efforts.
Due to the extreme drought conditions that persist throughout the area, residents and visitors are asked to use caution when doing yard work, towing vehicles or trailers, or other outdoor activities that involve flammable heat sources. Forest visitors are reminded that fire restrictions remain in effect throughout the Shasta-Trinity National Forest prohibiting building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire. Shasta-Trinity National Forest, July 11, 2021 — The Salt Fire remains at 12,650 acres with 70% containment. There has not been any perimeter growth in the last two days and infrared detection does not reveal significant areas of heat. More than 800 fire personnel continue working on the Salt Fire and within the affected communities. Firefighters are strengthening containment lines. Areas within the containment lines creating smoke are being addressed and are located well within the fire perimeter. Fire suppression efforts have incorporated methods that support repair.
Shasta County Sheriff’s Office rescinded all evacuation orders, but evacuation warnings remain in place for some areas of the fire. Old Mill Road at Gilman Road is open to residents only.
Fire restrictions remain in effect throughout the Shasta-Trinity National Forest prohibiting building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire. Shasta-Trinity National Forest, July 10, 2021 — The Salt Fire remains at 12,650 acres with no perimeter growth. Containment is now 55%. Less than 1,000 fire personnel are now assigned to the incident. Evacuation orders and warnings remain in place for some areas of the fire, while others are slowly being allowed to return to their homes. Fire activity is currently limited to isolated smoldering pockets within the interior of the fire perimeter. Crews continue to complete and strengthen containment lines in all areas of the fire and also address interior areas of lingering heat. As the fire enters the next stage, crews will begin the process of mop up. Mop up is searching for hot spots using hand tools and hoses to ensure the fire remains within containment lines.
The continued drought and excessive heat have created extremely dry conditions and a high probability of ignition in unburned areas. Shasta-Trinity National Forest, July 9, 2021 — The Salt Fire is currently 12,650 acres and containment is now 45%. Nearly 1,200 fire personnel are assigned to the incident. Evacuation orders and warnings remain in place for some areas of the fire, while others are slowly being allowed to return to their homes. Progress has been made in completing containment lines from Crane Mountain toward Bucks Peak. Night operations are continuing in the southeastern area of the fire. As containment lines are completed, resources from this fire may be reassigned to other fires. Initial attack crews remain vigilant to address any areas where fire may be active.

Fire
The fire is currently 12,650 acres and 35 percent contained. Fire activity is minimal. Firefighters continue to make great progress with only interior activity/smokes at times.
Smoke
Any lingering smoke trapped in the valleys will lift between 900 AM and 1100 AM. If interior pockets of the fire become active, light smoke is possible in close proximity to the fire. Smoke will generally push to the north and northeast during the afternoon. By evening, smoke may push more east to southeast. Tonight into Friday, smoke will settle into the valleys with light smoke impacts possible for the communities along the Interstate 5 Corridor from Shasta Lake to Dunsmuir. Smoke from other wildfires burning across northern California and portions of Oregon could move into the region with light impacts. Any smoke will lift between 900 AM and 1100 AM Friday. Strong high pressure building across the west may help push smoke from other wildfires more east to even southeast. This could result in some light to moderate smoke impacts with a more general regional haze developing.

Shasta-Trinity National Forest, July 8, 2021 — The Salt Fire is currently 12,644 acres and containment is now 35%. Nearly 1,600 fire personnel are assigned to the incident. Evacuation orders in for southeast Gregory Creek have been lifted but Gregory Creek Road at the Interstate 5 overcrossing remains closed. Additional evacuation orders and warnings do remain in place for some areas of the fire, as efforts to contain the fire progress. Indirect containment lines have been completed near Delta Point, in the northwestern fire area. Bulldozers and hand crews are continuing to build fire containment lines toward Crane Mountain and toward Bucks Peak. Crews are conducting direct attack fire suppression operations, as well as mopping up in areas where fire activity is minimal. An unmanned aircraft is assisting firefighters by scouting areas for hazard trees and heat using video and infrared.
