Rough Patch Complex and Jack Fire Update Sept 9 2021
Related Incident:
Publication Type: News
Summary: A front passed through, bringing cooler temperatures and higher relative humidity. These improved conditions allowed crews to assess areas along fire lines that were socked in with smoke. Improved visibility gave helicopters an opportunity to fly in support of ground operations. Northern Rockies Team 1 will be transitioning out and Great Basin Team 2 will take command of the Rough Patch Complex and Jack Fires on Friday at 6:00 a.m. Coordination between both teams and the Devil’s Knob Complex is ongoing.
Chaos and Little Bend Fires: The Chaos fire is at 24,462 acres and the Little Bend fire is at 8,569 acres. Hotshot crews assessed the fire that crossed the 2460 road north of the Chaos Fire and determined that the terrain was too steep and rugged for a direct attack. Air operations are keeping the fire from spreading as crews assess options.
Weather: Local conditions will be seasonably cool with gusty afternoon winds from the northwest. A Red Flag Warning has been issued east of Toketee, bringing scattered thunderstorms and wind gusts may cause outflow winds and increased fire activity near Glide. The Rough Patch and Jack Fires could see a slight drizzle at the end of the week.

South Oregon Cascades Rough Patch & Devils Knob Complex, and Jack Fire
Issued at: 2021-09-08 07:56 PDT
Fire and Weather: A weak cool front passes through the area today with cooler temperatures and slightly higher RH’s and west winds. The Rough Patch Complex and the Devils Knob Complex experienced active fire yesterday. Today fire personnel will reassess fire perimeters and containment options. The IR flight overnight shows the Devils Knob Complex is 59,934 acres and the Rough Patch Fire is 43,178 acres. Both complexes are 35% contained.
Smoke: West winds overnight cleared smoke out of many portions of the forecast area. The I-5 corridor should have good air quality today between Roseburg and Grants Pass. The Medford area should also experience improved air quality today. Communities close to the fires will continue to experience Unhealthy air quality especially overnight. As the Westerly winds develop today air quality will degrade in communities to the east of the fires.
Health: The AQI is based on the amount of particulates in the air that are smaller than the diameter of human hair. They can pose significant health problems because they can get deep into your lungs. Health problems include premature death in people with heart or lung disease, nonfatal heart attacks, irregular heartbeat, aggravated asthma, decreased lung function and increased respiratory symptoms.
Rough Patch and Jack Fire Update Sept 8 2021
Related Incident:
Publication Type: News
Summary: Hot and dry conditions the last two days combined with winds from the southwest, causing an increase in fire activity. Smoke diminished visibility significantly, grounding aircraft and raising safety concerns near fire lines. The fire grew in multiple areas of the complex, in some cases spotting over containment lines.
Chaos and Little Bend Fires: The Chaos fire is at 22,860 acres and the Little Bend fire is at 7,744 acres. The Chaos Fire crossed the containment line to the north along the 2460 road by Fairview Peak. The Little Bend Fire saw increased activity in the southeast corner near containment lines.
Jack and Buckhead Fires: The Jack fire is at 23,990 acres and the Buckhead fire is at 5,714 acres. The west, north, and northeast end of the Jack fire were held in place. Thick smoke limited crucial visibility on the south and west edges of the Buckhead Fire. Firefighting options were further affected by increased activity on the Smith Fire to the southwest, which is a part of the Devil’s Knob Complex. Incident Management Teams from both complexes are working together to coordinate their strategies.
Near Minky Fire: The Near Minky fire is at 4,867 acres. It is located south of the Jack and Buckhead fires and is contained on all sides, with the exception of the northwest corner.
Weather: Cooler temperatures and northwest winds will clear some smoke in the afternoon. Relative humidity increased overnight to 45-60%. A marine push later in the week will bring seasonable weather.

Rough Patch and Jack Fire Update Sept 7 2021
Related Incident:
Publication Type: News
Summary: The Rough Patch Complex and Jack Fires are being managed under a full suppression strategy. Fire activity is moderated by lingering smoke but may increase if it lifts. Firefighters will monitor and mop up fire lines as they cool to secure the fire perimeter. Air and ground operations are coordinating with the Devil’s Knob Complex fires as the complexes begin to share air space.
Chaos and Little Bend Fires: The Chaos fire is at 22,860 acres and the Little Bend fire is at 7,744 acres. Hoses were laid down along the 2460 road to support the containment line to the north. Nearby, burning operations along the 176 road are progressing well as crews make their way past Grouse Saddle to the 3829 road. South of the Little Bend Fire, heavy equipment is being used to stabilize road conditions along the 3810 as crews move east toward the 5850 road.
Jack and Buckhead Fires: The Jack fire is at 23,990 acres and the Buckhead fire is at 5,714 acres. The west, north, and northeast end of the Jack fire has been contained and is being patrolled. On the west edge, burning operations were completed to connect the 100 road to the 2871, joining the Jack and Buckhead fires. Continued nighttime shifts will ensure that there are no gaps in coverage. This is the last major section of this priority containment line.
Near Minky Fire: The Near Minky fire is at 4,867 acres. It is located south of the Jack and Buckhead fires. All but the northwestern edge of the fire has been contained. As conditions allow firing operations along the 100 road will continue to join Buckhead and Near Minky fires. Firefighters will continue to patrol and mop up to secure the fire’s edge from previous burning operations.
Weather: Conditions remain hot and dry, with temperatures in the upper 80s and relative humidity hovering between around 20%. Shifting winds will pick up throughout the day but terrain-driven pockets of smoke may endure.

South Oregon Cascades Rough Patch & Devils Knob Complex, and Jack Fire
Issued at: 2021-09-07 07:24 PDT
Fire and Weather:
Low pressure moving northward west of the coast will bring gusty winds to inland areas Tuesday afternoon and evening. Gusty winds will continue Wednesday east of the Cascades. If the smoke clears enough today to launch aircraft the Devils Knob Complex is planning on burning up to 5,000 acres. The Rough Patch Complex is planning smaller scale ignitions as well. Both Complexes successfully completed burnouts yesterday. Facebook and Inciweb have additional fire information.
Smoke: East wind along the I-5 corridor between Roseburg and Grants Pass will transport smoke into the corridor resulting in degraded air quality today. Expect Unhealthy to Hazardous air quality through the forecast area today with improvements Wednesday. Although high level SW winds have transported CA smoke over the forecast area the smoke is not expected to mix down and impact local air quality. Unfortunately, with two levels of smoke overhead, significant winds will be needed for extended periods of time to clear the airshed.

South Oregon Cascades Rough Patch & Devils Knob Complex, and Jack Fire
Issued at: 2021-09-06 07:35 PDT
Fire and Weather: Stable, hot and dry air remains over the forecast area today. A low pressure system moves in Tuesday evening with higher relative humidities and lower temperatures. Fires will continue to be active today and tomorrow. The Rough Patch Complex is 41,185 acres, and the Devils Knob Complex is 48,711 acres with approximately 3,500 acres of combined growth. The Jack Fire is 23,990 acres with minimal growth since Sept. 1. Facebook and Inciweb have additional fire information.
Smoke: Expect Unhealthy to Hazardous air quality throughout the majority of the forecast area through Tuesday. The I-5 corridor between Roseburg and Grants Pass will benefit from W winds off of the coast and have improved air quaility. A high elevation inversion holds a blanket of smoke over the area today until strong enough winds develop to push it out. Generally, smoke pools along creeks and rivers overnight. Communities near active fires will continue to have Unhealthy to Hazardous air quality. Check out the "Fire and Smoke map " for current conditions.
Health: Avoid strenuous outdoor activity during periods of unhealthy air quality.
Rough Patch and Jack Fire Update Sept 5 2021
Related Incident:
Publication Type: News
Summary: The Rough Patch Complex and Jack fire are being managed under a full suppression strategy using direct and indirect tactics to minimize fire spread to prevent loss of valuable resources. With the warmer weather, the potential for fire to spot ahead of itself is higher. Firefighters will be watching for spots and holding and improving lines. A night operational shift will be staffed starting tonight to allow crews to take advantage of nighttime burning windows where weather conditions are more favorable. The goal is to secure the northern side of the Chaos and the western edge of Jack, Buckhead and Near Minky.
Chaos and Little Bend Fires: The Chaos fire is at 22,090 acres and the Little Bend fire is at 7,585 acres. Work continues on the north side of the Chaos fire along the 176 road toward Shane Saddle. Crews are working to add some depth to the line to secure it. Fire was active in City Creek yesterday, as well as on the southern end of the Little Bend fire, and along the 3821 road. Today, crews will be working on improving lines and watching for spots on the southern end of both fires, as well as the northern end of the Chaos fire where they conducted burning operations last night.
Jack and Buckhead Fires: The Jack fire is at 23,897 acres and the Buckhead fire is at 5,541 acres. The west, north, and northeast end of the Jack fire has been contained and is being patrolled. Additional work is being done along the 100 road prior to continuing the burning operations down to the Near Minky fire. Fire activity has picked up along that southwestern edge of the Jack and northwest edge of the Buckhead.
Near Minky Fire: The Near Minky fire is at 4,867 acres. This fire is located south of the Jack and Buckhead fires. The eastern edge and a portion of the western edge have been contained. Burning operations off the 700 road were successful in stopping the forward progression of a spot outside the main fire.
Weather: Temperatures will remain in the 80’s with relative humidity slightly higher than yesterday. Variable winds and warmer and drier temperatures increase the potential for more active fire behavior. Closures and Additional Information:
