Ford-Corkscrew Fire Update
8/17/2021

Yesterday, the fire progressed northeast to north, moving into the Five Sister’s Mountain area, backing down towards to Bittrich-Antler, Casberg-Burroughs, and Redman.  Dozer line in conjunction with disking of fields were created to try and hold the fire line at that area.  At around 8pm last night, the winds shifted, coming out of the north, which pushed the southern edge of the fire into Scott’s Valley area, moving the fire front to the southwest.  New level 3 evacuations were given in the area between Tumtum and Ford, along Highway 291 to Corkscrew Canyon Road.  Crews were able to get portions of dozer line along the south edge of the fire.  Crews were able to get dozer line from Ford to Rail Canyon Road and hold the fire within that area.  The fire expanded in the Rail Canyon area and crews worked primarily on structure protection in this area as the fire progressed.Today, crews will work on connecting the dozer line on the fire front between Ford and Tumtum as well as holding the fireline west of Scott’s Valley Road.  Crews will continue to work north along 231 constructing dozer line on the western flank of the fire.  Engines will continue to prepare and conduct structure protection where the flame front is moving through.Cooler weather and higher humidity is expected in the area with a chance of rain.Southwest Area Incident Management Team 5 (Type 2 Team) will begin to arrive today.  They are anticipated to take command of the fire at 6:00am on 8/18/2021

Ford-Corkscrew Fire
Update 8/16/2021

The Ford Corkscrew Fire started on August 15th at approximately 1:29pm.  It is located at Ford and 16.5 miles west-southwest of Deer Park. Fire behavior has been extreme, with the fire showing crown runs and spotting over ½ of a mile.  The fire was driven by wind, quickly spreading to the northeast, burning through the community of Ford and into the Rail Canyon area.  The fire continued to move northwest towards Scoop Mountain. Yesterday, Stevens County Fire District 1, with mutual aid from Stevens County Fire Districts and Spokane County Fire Districts, along with DNR and the Spokane Tribal Agency responded to the fire.  Crews worked with numerous aircraft, from retardant drops from heavy aircraft to bucket drops from helicopters to protect structures and slow the progression of the fire.  Primary and secondary structures were lost in the Ford Community as well as in Rail Canyon. Fire behavior is expected to continue to be wind driven, progressing the fire to the northeast and east later in the day. The fire is cresting over the Five Sisters and Bald Mountain and is anticipated to move into the Williams Valley Area and into Scotts Valley Area.       Northeast Interagency Incident Management Type 3 Team 1 assumed command of the fire at 6:00am on August 16th, 2021.

An estimated half inch of rain fell on the Parleys Canyon Fire throughout the night. Another inch and a half is expected through Thursday. Heber City, which is south of the fire, received 1.85 inches of rain. Firefighters will assess weather conditions and continue increasing containment to prevent further growth towards the multiple residences located in Summit Park, Pinebrook, and Lambs Canyon when favorable weather conditions permit. All evacuations were lifted at 8 PM on Tuesday, August 17, allowing residents to return home after four days. The Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest Closure has also been lifted. All closures on I-80 have been lifted and all lanes of travel are currently open. Despite strong winds yesterday, the existing fireline held and prevented further fire growth.  The total number of assigned resources will decrease beginning today, as wetting rains and accelerated firefighter progress mean fewer firefighters are needed to complete containment.  These resources may be sent on to other existing or new fires.  Some will get to return home for days off. Today, the fire will be monitored by minimal staffing to minimize potential hazards created by the rain, including muddy, wet roads and access trails.  When safety concerns have been addressed, weather conditions will allow firefighters to take advantage of those conditions present in heavily timbered areas while continuing to construct remaining fire lines needed for full containment. Fire behavior is expected to be minimal today. Large amounts of water runoff are possible in fire burned areas as weather forecasting models indicate the potential for an inch or more of rain, including the possibility for flash flooding.

Firefighters continue to increase containment on the Parleys Canyon Fire and to minimize potential of additional fire growth towards multiple residences located in Summit Park, Pinebrook, and Lambs Canyon. Securing the fire’s perimeter enough to allow residents back into their homes and protecting the municipal watershed remain the highest incident priorities. Closures and evacuations will be continually evaluated in coordination with the Summit County Sheriff’s Office. Please be cautious traveling through areas near the fire, particularly early in the mornings and late in the evenings as fire traffic will be heaviest. Minimal travel restrictions are in effect for I-80 and are being continuously evaluated. Currently, east-bound traffic is only restricted in one lane. All other lanes in both directions are open. Yesterday’s fire behavior was minimal. A Red Flag Warning – an indicator to firefighters of weather conditions that could lead to rapid fire growth or extreme fire behavior – is in effect for today for forecasted gusty winds, thunderstorms, and large hail. These conditions could lead to new lightning-caused fires and potential fire growth.  Water runoff is a possibility in fire burned areas if significant rain occurs. Forecast models indicate the potential for an inch or more of rain with the potential for flash flooding. Fire crews are working on all sections of the fire perimeter. Helicopters are dropping water to support the crews constructing fireline on the ground. Rocky Mountain Power has restored power to Summit Park and Lambs Canyon.  Heavy smoke from neighboring states is expected to persist again today. Evacuations:  Residents of Summit Park, upper Pinebrook, and Lambs Canyon are all under mandatory evacuation orders. Team #4 is working closely with the Summit County Sheriff’s Office to evaluate when it is safe to lift evacuations, once the eastern side of the fire perimeter is secured. Closures:  For the safety of the public, the Unita-Wasatch-Cache National Forest enacted an area closure that includes all roads, trails, trailheads, picnic sites, and all National Forest System lands within the Lambs Canyon area and from Maple Grove (winter gate) in upper Millcreek Canyon east to the Forest Boundary. The full map and official closure order are available at https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/closures/7802/.

539 acres, 10% contained

This morning, Great Basin Team #4 assumed command of the Parleys Canyon Fire.  The highest priority on the fire is the safety of the public and firefighters.  Other priorities include protecting the municipal watershed.  Closures and evacuations will be continually evaluated to reduce or lift when it is safe to do so.

The Team is working from the fire camp established at the Park City Ice Arena.  Please be cautious traveling through the area, particularly early in the mornings and late in the evenings as fire traffic will be heaviest.  Travel restrictions on I-80 are being evaluated.  Currently, east-bound traffic is restricted to the left two lanes to protect firefighters working along the highway.  West-bound traffic is unaffected.

Yesterday’s fire behavior was minimal, despite gusty winds throughout the afternoon.  Fire crews are working on all sections of the fire perimeter.  Helicopters, airtankers, and water scoopers are dropping water and retardant on particularly active portions of the fire to support the crews constructing fireline on the ground.  Two helicopters from the Utah National Guard will support the firefighters again today.  Jodanelle Reservoir will remain closed as long as water scoopers are using it.  Rocky Mountain Power is working to return power to Summit Park.

Heavy regional smoke will persist throughout the day again today.  This smoke is acting somewhat like cloud cover to lower temperatures slightly.  Tomorrow, a low pressure system will enter the region and increase the chances of precipitation.  Runoff is a possibility in fire burned areas if significant rain occurs.

Evacuations:  Residents of Summit Park, Pinebrook, and Lambs Canyon are all under mandatory evacuation orders.  Team #4 is working closely with the Summit County Sheriff’s Office to evaluate when it is safe to lift evacuations, once the eastern side of the fire perimeter is secured.

Closures:  For the safety of the public, the Unitah-Wasatch-Cache National Forest is enacted an area closure that will include Mill Creek and Winter Canyon.  Once available, the full map and official closure order at https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/closures/7802/.
