JOHN EK FIRE (1,350 acres, 0% contained): Crews were flown into the fire to improve portages and set up sprinkler systems on the east and west sides of the fire. Firefighters will be widening portages to serve as a contingency line on the north side of the fire from Ogishkemuncie Lake to Tuscarora Lake. A structure protection group is working on the south side of Gunflint trail from Poplar Lake to Round Lake and Tuscarora Lodge.

WHELP FIRE (50 acres, 0% contained): The Whelp Fire is five miles northwest of Sawbill Lake. Fire managers continue to use air resources to monitor the fire and are assessing contingency line opportunities on the south side of the fire. They are also looking for opportunities to go direct.

WEATHER and FIRE BEHAVIOR:  An incoming weather disturbance will bring abundant cloud cover to the region today, along with increasing chances for measurable rainfall tonight through Friday morning. Winds today will increase out of the southeast at 6-9 mph with 14-19 mph gusts. Minimum relative humidity will range from the mid-40’s to mid-50’s, with higher humidity’s expected for Friday. Clouds and scattered showers will keep temperatures cooler the next two days.

SAFETY & EVACUATIONS:  As of 8:00 a.m. on September 2, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office has changed the evacuation status of the Upper Gunflint Trail, from the south side of Loon Lake west to the end of the Gunflint trail, back to “Ready” status. There are no mandatory evacuations in Cook County currently. However, the public should continue to monitor the status of the fires as conditions can change quickly. The Superior National Forest is reopening some areas of the Forest, including the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, given recent rains, cooling temperatures and progress made on active fire. However, certain closures will remain in place where active fires remain on the landscape. 

The Forest is lifting the full closure of the BWCAW, the Crooked Lake closure near the fires in Canada. The Forest is slightly modifying closure maps for the Greenwood Fire, and the John Ek and Whelp Fires. The closure of Forest Service land at the Upper Gunflint Trail remains in place.

WEATHER and FIRE BEHAVIOR:  Dry weather and seasonal temperatures remain with temperatures from 69-74. Mostly sunny today with clouds in the afternoon. Winds from the southeast at 5-8 mph with peak gusts between 10 and 15 mph. Drought-conditioned fuels are holding fire but most are not exposed to wind or are near fuels conducive for spread. Very low probability for spotting today.

The Whelp Fire remains at an estimated 50 acres. Last night, a community meeting was held at the Schaap Community Center and was well-attended by 100 people.

Additional resources were not able to reach the fire due to weather-related flight restrictions.

TODAY: Reconnaissance on portages around the John Ek Fire will be conducted to identify areas that will allow for safe access in and out, hose lays, and installation sites for sprinkler systems. Plans are being developed for fire line locations that will be a safe distance from the fire to allow for an indirect fire suppression operation in the future. On the Whelp Fire, additional firefighters and equipment will be inserted today. They will continue to build fire line around the perimeter and mop up hot spots. The infrastructure group continues to complete Firewise defensible space projects along the Gunflint Trail.  

WEATHER and FIRE BEHAVIOR:  High pressure will build into the area today resulting in clearing skies, seasonal temperatures and NW winds 5- 8 mph with gusts up to 15 mph. Humidity will remain in the 47-52% range. Yesterday’s rain raised fuel moistures but the drought-conditioned fuels are capable of holding fire for a long time. As conditions dry out over the next few days, fire activity in these areas may return.

Firefighters continued to record GPS points to establish helispots, spike camps, and drop points for future fire operations.  The Whelp Fire remains at an estimated 50 acres. Firefighters constructed fire line and installed hose lays. 

TODAY: Weather permitting, the 4-person reconnaissance crew on the John Ek fire will be flown out. Reconnaissance on portages around the John Ek Fire will be conducted to identify areas that will allow for safe access in and out, hose lays, and installation sites for sprinkler systems. On the Whelp Fire, weather permitting, attempts will be made to insert seventeen firefighters and equipment.  The thirteen firefighters on the Whelp Fire will begin mop up operations along the fire line. The infrastructure group continues to complete Firewise defensible space projects along the Gunflint Trail.  

WEATHER and FIRE BEHAVIOR: Morning showers are expected with a chance of scattered showers throughout the day. Gusty winds are possible. A front moving through the region will bring west-northwest winds from 15 to 30 mph. In the afternoon, humidity will begin to drop as dry air is pushed east across the northern part of the state.

Yesterday: Rain fell on parts of Northern Minnesota yesterday.  Precipitation did not reach the forest floor in many locations.  The John Ek Fire is estimated to be around 1,563 acres and and has seen little growth due to recent weather.  The reconnaissance crew was inserted into the wilderness to begin planning for helispots, spike camps, and drop points for equipment.  The Whelp Fire remains at an estimated 50 acres.  Thirteen firefighters began to construct line and install hose lines.  Due to unfavorable weather yesterday, additional firefighters were not inserted via aircraft.

Today: The on the ground reconnaissance mission will be completed on the John Ek Fire.  Firefighters will share GPS points with fire managers to begin planning for firefighter insertion and suppression tactics.  On the Whelp Fire, firefighters will construct line and string out hose lines.  If a small weather window allows, additional firefighters will be inserted by aircraft.  Both fires will be monitored by aircraft and water drops will occur as necessary. The infrastructure group continues to complete Firewise defensible space projects along the Gunflint Trail.

Yesterday: The John Ek Fire did not make any significant growth due to weather conditions and remains at 1563 acres. Plans were developed to begin ground reconnaissance today. No water drops were necessary. There was no growth on the Whelp Fire and it remains at 50 acres. Fourteen firefighters were inserted on Whelp yesterday and they were able to set up a camp, establish a pump site and begin hose lays.

Today: A reconnaissance crew will inserted into the John Ek fire today and returning this evening.  They will establish communications with the command post and scout for safety zones, helispots and spike camps. Additional resources will be inserted at the Whelp Fire to construct hose lays. Air resources will monitor both fires and suppress any fire activity.

Whelp Fire: The Whelp Fire is a lightning-caused fire located five miles northwest of Sawbill Lake and is an estimated 50 acres. Firefighters will be inserted today. They will establish communications, set up a spike camp and began taking action on the fire.

Closure Update: The Superior National Forest is closing national forest lands and roads along the upper portion of the Gunflint Trail. County roads and private roads, including the Gunflint Trail, remain open. The closure includes all national forest lands and roads along Cook County 12/Gunflint Trail beginning at the Cook County 92 intersection to the end of the Gunflint Trail. The closure area includes Trails End and Iron Lake campgrounds. Campground reservations have been cancelled and refunded for the next seven days, through August 31. The closure is consistent with the Cook County Sheriff’s pre-evacuation area for the upper Gunflint Trail area due to the John Ek Fire. The closure includes all lands, waters, trails, portages, campsite, canoe routes, and Wilderness entry points in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Overview: Yesterday showed minimal to moderate fire activity on both fires.  No firefighters have been sent directly to the fires due to difficult access, limited aircraft resources, and safety concerns. Local fire department staff and an infrastructure group of two crews from Alaska and Indiana will be working along the Gunflint Trail to conduct firewise activities as able.  The MNICS Team plans to insert ground resources on Whelp Fire within two days once communications and air support are in place. 

John Ek Fire: The fire is 2.5 miles south of Little Saganaga Lake and extends from John Ek Lake to the SE corner of Elton Lake. The John Ek Fire is estimated to be 1563 acres in size. A reconnaissance flight is scheduled for this morning and afternoon to continue to develop suppression plans.  Water drops will be performed as necessary if the fire becomes active. There are no mandatory evacuations in Cook County at this time. Homeowners in Cook County can sign up for the emergency alert system CodeRED at https://www.co.cook.mn.us/index.php/2016-04-14-15-58-03. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office recommends that residents and visitors be in “ready” mode in case of eventual evacuation.

Whelp Fire: The Whelp Fire is a lightning-caused fire located five miles northwest of Sawbill Lake and is an estimated 50 acres. Fire continues to show moderate fire behavior with backing, creeping, and some torching.  A helitack crew will inspect and improve the helispot today to prepare for the insertion of firefighters. 

Closure Update: The Forest is closing National Forest lands and roads along the upper portion of the Gunflint Trail. County roads and private roads remain open.  The closure includes all forest lands and roads along Cook County 12/Gunflint Trail beginning at the Cook County 92 intersection to the end of the Gunflint Trail.  This closure area includes Trails End and Iron Lake campgrounds. Campground reservations have been cancelled and refunded for the next seven days, through August 31. This closure is consistent with the Cook County Sheriff’s pre-evacuation area for the upper Gunflint Trail area due to the John Ek Fire. The closure includes all lands, waters, trails, portages, campsite, canoe routes, and Wilderness entry points in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The Forest has notified permit holders and outfitters and is cancelling permits August 21 through September 3. For details on closure areas, visit the Superior National Forest webpage. With continued fires and a shortage of firefighting resources, these closures allow firefighters to focus on existing fires or new starts without the concern for public safety. 

Fire Restrictions: The Superior National Forest is not allowing campfires within the Forest boundary on National Forest lands, including the BWCAW.
