Alisal Fire Update for Monday, October 18, 2021

Yesterday 

The day saw minimal fire activity as a cold front pushed cooler weather and increased moisture levels through the area. Crews again made more progress on containing the fire. While there was a small slop over the perimeter along the northwest edge near Nojoqui Creek, super-scooper fixed-wing aircraft dropped water on it and firefighters quickly secured the flames. To the southern edge of the fire motorists along California Highway 101 are reminded to give firefighters and their equipment wide berth when passing.  

Today 

Fire suppression efforts begin to transition to repair. Few hot spots remain. Today’s priority is to contain patches of heat along the northwest edge of the fire and continue to keep the fire within the current footprint.  

Weather 

Expect cooler temperatures, high humidity levels and wind gusts from the north-northwest up to 40 mph today. A slight warming and drying trend is forecasted for Tuesday through Friday. Winds continue pushing over the area from the south with little potential to create a flare-up or spot fire. 

Evacuations 

The Evacuation Order for the area west of Arroyo Hondo to intersection of Hwy 101 and Hwy 1, the Arroyo Hondo Canyon and Refugio Canyon, and the area between El Capitan Beach State Park and West Camino Cielo has been canceled. Take caution when returning home as emergency personnel remain in the area. Southern California Edison (SCE) is in the process of replacing power poles and will continue inspections via helicopters throughout the week. This area is restricted to residents only. Others without proof of residency or official business in the area may be cited by law enforcement. 

Closures 

Los Padres National forest has issued a closure of the Santa Barbara Ranger District in the area surrounding the fire. The closure expires Nov. 16, 2021. A map highlighting the closed area is at www.fs.usda.gov/lpnf.

Actualización del incendio de Alisal para el domingo 17 de octubre de 2021

Ayer 

Las temperaturas cálidas, combinadas con condiciones muy secas y ventosas, dieron como resultado un aumento en la actividad de fuegos aislados. Surgió un incendio secundario de aproximadamente un acre y medio por fuera de una línea retardante en la esquina noroccidental. Los bomberos lo contuvieron de inmediato con cortafuegos de excavadora y manuales, mientras las aeronaves lo rociaban con agua. Las cuadrillas trabajaron en la extinción de fuegos residuales en los cortafuegos cercanos a Reagan Ranch. Los combustibles jóvenes que quedaron tras el incendio Sherpa de 2016 han permitido un fuerte avance hacia el este, donde el terreno escarpado presenta dificultades para los bomberos y su equipamiento pesado. A lo largo de la autopista 101 de California, que se reabrió el 14 de octubre, los bomberos reforzaron la contención y continuaron con las labores de neutralización. Se ruega a los conductores que circulan por la autopista 101 que se mantengan a distancia ante el paso de los bomberos y sus equipos. Además, en la esquina noroccidental, una superficie de menos de un acre atravesó el perímetro, pero las cuadrillas construyeron un cortafuegos manual y pasaron mangueras por los flancos.

Condiciones meteorológicas 

El viento desde el océano se intensificará en la zona, trayendo temperaturas más frescas y una mayor humedad relativa. Los vientos sureños y de flujo ascendente prevalecerán durante el día de hoy, con ráfagas de aproximadamente 20 mph. Mas tarde esta noche y mañana, un frente frío seco barrerá la zona, trayendo temperaturas aún más bajas y mayor humedad. Sin embargo, también traerá vientos del noroeste al norte hacia el fuego, con ráfagas de hasta 25-35 mph. 

Evacuaciones 

Se ha cancelado la Advertencia de evacuación para el área al este de la autopista 101, incluidas las propiedades de Gaviota Beach y Hollister Ranch. Tenga cuidado al volver a casa ya que el personal de emergencia permanece en la zona. Manténgase alerta a las condiciones cambiantes.

Yesterday 

Warm temperatures mixed with very dry and windy conditions resulted in an increase in isolated fire activity. A spot fire approximately an acre and a half popped up outside a retardant line on the northwestern corner. Firefighters immediately contained it with dozer and hand lines while aircraft doused it with water. Crews mopped up containment lines near Reagan Ranch. Young fuels left behind by the 2016 Sherpa Fire have lent themselves to steady progress to the east, where rugged terrain pose challenges to firefighters and their heavy equipment. Along California 101 — which reopened Oct. 14 — firefighters fortified containment and continued mop-up efforts. Motorists along Hwy 101 are encouraged to give firefighters and their equipment wide berth when passing. Additionally, on the northeastern corner, an area less than an acre slopped over the perimeter, but crews constructed handline and flanked hose around it. 

Today 

Few hot spots remain. Today’s main priority is to contain patches of heat remaining to the northwest edge of the fire. Crews will also focus on holding the rest of the fire’s footprint. Crews will continue to use aviation assets as conditions allow.  

Weather 

Onshore flow will strengthen across the area, bringing cooler temperatures and higher relative humidity. Southerly and upvalley winds will prevail through today with gusts around 20 mph. Later this evening and into tomorrow, a dry cold front will sweep across the area, delivering even cooler temperatures and higher humidity. It will, however, also bring strong northwest to north winds to the fire with gusts up to 25-35 mph. 

Evacuations 

The Evacuation Warning for the area west of Highway 101, including Gaviota Beach and Hollister Ranch properties, has been cancelled. Take caution when returning home as emergency personnel remain in the area. Stay alert to changing conditions.

Alisal Fire Update for Saturday, October 16, 2021

Yesterday 

Fire crews continued making steady progress ensuring the public’s safety. Crews contained isolated fire activity near Camino Cielo caused by higher temperatures and reduced humidity. Along the northern edge of the fire, helicopters dowsed heat with water using super scoopers. Crews mopped up and cold-trailed areas to the east near the old Sherpa Fire burn scar where much of the fire is going out on its own. Along California 101 — which reopened Oct. 14 — firefighters fortified containment and continued mop-up efforts. Motorists along Hwy 101 can expect to see firefighting equipment and vehicles and are encouraged to drive cautiously as crews continue work here. Helicopters attacked the fire into the night to the east near Gaviota. 

Today 

Today’s main priority is to contain patches of heat remaining along the northern edge of the fire. Crews will also continue focus on maintaining the rest of the fire’s footprint and ensure the fire holds where it has been contained. Crews will continue to use aviation assets as conditions allow.  

Weather 

Warm and dry conditions will continue through Saturday. On Sunday, a pattern change will occur as a dry cold front approaches the area. Expect cooler temperatures and higher relative humidity on Sunday. The dry cold front will pass over the incident Sunday night and Monday morning, bringing even cooler temperatures and higher relative humidity. However, the passage of the cold front will bring some strong northwest to north winds to the area on Monday with forecasted gusts up to 25-35 mph. 

Evacuations 

The Evacuation Order for the residences along Arroyo Quemada Ln., and the Evacuation Warning for the area east of El Capitan Beach State Park, west of Dos Pueblos Canyon Rd., and south of West Camino Cielo has been canceled. Take caution when returning home as emergency personnel remain in the area. Stay alert to changing conditions. The Evacuation Center at Dos Pueblos High School has been put on a warm/standby status.  Evacuees needing assistance can contact the American Red Cross at 833-583-3111.

Ayer 

Los equipos de bomberos mantuvieron el fuego hacia el norte a lo largo de West Camino Cielo. Completaron una exitosa operación de quema anoche desde Refugio Road hasta Camino Ceilo. El fuego también se ralentizó a lo largo de su flanco este en los combustibles más recientes del incendio de Sherpa de 2016. Los vientos empujaron el fuego hacia el oeste forzando las evacuaciones al oeste de Arroyo Hondo hasta la intersección de la autopista 101 de California y la autopista 1 hacia Gaviota.  

Hoy 

La prioridad de hoy será detener la propagación hacia el noreste sobre Refugio Canyon. Las cuadrillas de bomberos continuarán utilizando los recursos aéreos según lo permitan las condiciones. En el extremo occidental, los bomberos trabajarán para evitar que el fuego cruce la autopista 101 en Gaviota. La atención se centrará en frenar la expansión del fuego hacia el oeste y reabrir la autopista 101. Las cuadrillas de bomberos continúan participando en el área de Refugio, así como también talando árboles caídos a lo largo de las vías del tren. Transición

FOREST ORDER NUMBER 05-07-54-21-20 LOS PADRES NATIONAL FOREST SANTA BARBARA RANGER DISTRICT ALISAL FIRE AREA, ROAD, AND TRAIL CLOSURE

Pursuant to 16 U.S.C. § 551 and 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(a) and (b), and to provide for public safety and protect natural resources, the following acts are prohibited within the Santa Barbara Ranger District of the Los Padres National Forest. This Order is effective from October 16, 2021, and until November 16, 2021.1. Going into or being upon National Forest System lands within the Alisal Fire Closure Area, as described in Exhibit A and shown on Exhibit B. 36 C.F.R. § 261.52(e).2. Being on any National Forest System road within the Alisal Fire Closure Area, as described in Exhibit A and shown on Exhibit B. 36 C.F.R. § 261.54(e).3. Being on any National Forest System trail within the Alisal Fire Closure Area, as described in Exhibit A and shown on Exhibit B. 36 C.F.R. § 261.55(a).4. Entering or using any National Forest Campground within the Alisal Fire Closure Area, as described in Exhibit A and shown on Exhibit B. 36 C.F.R. § 261.58(b).Pursuant to 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this Order:1. Any Federal, State or Local Officer or member of an organized rescue or fire fighting force in the performance of an official duty.2. Owners or lessees of private land within the Emergency Closure Area, to the extent necessary to gain access to their land.3. Persons with Forest Service Permit No. FS-7700-48 (Permit for Use of Roads, Trails, or Areas Restricted by Regulation or Order), specifically exempting them from this Order. These prohibitions are in addition to the general prohibitions in 36 C.F.R. Part 261, Subpart A.A violation of these prohibitions is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization or imprisonment for not more than six months or both. 16 U.S.C. § 551 and 18 U.S.C. §§ 3559, 3571 and 3581.

EXHIBIT A

The Alisal Fire Area, Road, Trail, and Campground Closure begins on the Santa Barbara Ranger District where the Los Padres National Forest boundary meets McCoy Canyon. Head due north to West Camino Cielo then follow Bear Creek to its junction with the Los Padres National Forest boundary on north part of district. Then head west along the Los Padres National Forest boundary to where it meets Gaviota State Park. Follow the southern Los Padres National Forest boundary east to the starting point at McCoy Canyon.

Ayer 

Las cuadrillas de bomberos lograron importantes avances, gracias a los cuales pudieron reabrirse la carretera California Highway 101 y el ferrocarril Union Pacific. Ambos habían estado cerrados como resultado de la propagación del fuego. Los bomberos comenzaron la neutralización alrededor de gran parte del incendio, por ejemplo, en Camino Cielo, Refugio Canyon y a lo largo de Highway 101. La “neutralización” realizada por los bomberos tras el fuego se ha controlado mediante la extinción o el retiro de materiales ardientes cerca de la línea de control. Las cuadrillas aseguraron el perímetro a lo largo de Reagan Ranch y Refugio Canyon. Las cuadrillas de élite también comenzaron a enfriar áreas del borde de la zona quemada por el incendio de Sherpa, lo que representa un método de control del borde de un incendio parcialmente extinguido mediante una cuidadosa inspección manual para detectar fuego. Además, a lo largo de Highway 101, las cuadrillas retiraron árboles peligrosos y los helicópteros atacaron el borde del incendio.  #AlisalFire Update: Last night the fire area did not get good recovery and today we are seeing an increase in activity and smoke production. Overall though firefighters continue to make good progress on containment. On the western edge, hand crews are working in conjunction with the aircraft to pick interior pockets of heat. The hotshot crews are making the turn to the north working up the slope (above Canada de las Posta). At the top of the northwestern corner, Tahoe Hotshots continue to build direct hand line. Aircraft are dropping retardant on the ridgeline above the Santa Barbara County Fire Station, to further protect from any movement to the north. The crews are working in Chaparral and Oak over-story in an area that has not burned since the 1955 Gaviota Fire. Interior islands are burning along the northern and eastern portions of the fire they're currently not a threat to the perimeter.
