Summary: At approximately 10:00 AM on Monday, April 18, 2022, resources from Prescott National Forest responded to a reported wildfire south of Prescott near Mt Union. The fire is burning through brush, ponderosa pine and mixed conifer. Local resources including aircraft have been working throughout the day in rugged terrain identifying hazards and scouting control feature as the begin to suppress the fire. Resources including crews, engines and aircraft are on scene and have been ordered. Smoke may be visible from multiple locations including Chino Valley, Mayer, and Prescott Valley.

ROAD CLOSURES:
Goodwin Road – Crown King to Senator Highway; Walker Road is blocked at Senator Hwy, Lower Wolf Creek Road is closed at Senator Hwy and Big Bug Mesa Road is closed at Goodwin Road. As a reminder to the public, with the increased fire vehicles in the area, for public and firefighter safety people should not travel into any of the fire area.

Cooks Peak Fire Final Update
Update: 5/13/2022
Fire Update: The Cooks Peak Fire is expected to be 100% contained by this evening, Friday, May 13. The Type 3 Incident Management Team that has been managing the fire will transition to a local Type 4 organization. Most resources will be demobilized following this week’s wind events but approximately 20 firefighters will continue to patrol, monitor and mop up heat. Today and tomorrow, forecasts call for calmer winds but continued dry air. The National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch in northeastern NM today. Smoke from the Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon Fire will likely continue to in the Cooks Peak Fire area.
This will be the final update for the fire. The specially designated phone line and email for this incident will be disconnected and all fire inquiries can be sent to the Las Vegas District Office of the NM Division of Forestry at 505-425-7472. Fire Update: A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 8am-9pm. Slightly cooler temperatures and strong afternoon winds are expected with gusts up to 40 mph. Humidity will be in the single digits. Friday, winds will be calmer, but weather conditions will remain dry and warm. Smoke from the Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon Fire is being pushed by strong winds toward the Cooks Peak Fire. Interior pockets of fuel will continue to burn down and smoke may be visible but the fire is not actively spreading. Crews will patrol and mop up along existing firelines and closely watch and hold all lines as strong winds can carry hot embers across. In addition, crews will continue suppression repair work.
Resource specialists continue to assess completed work and identify additional rehabilitation needed. A group of incident resources will continue to support local resources with any new starts that may occur in the vicinity of the fire. There are 83 personnel assigned to the incident. Most resources have been demobilized or recommitted to other fires.

Fire Update: A Red Flag Warning is forecasted today until 9pm and Thursday from 9am-8pm. Afternoon winds are expected to be 20-35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Thursday, humidity is forecasted to be in the single digits and winds 15-30mph with gusts around 40mph. Despite the strong winds and dry conditions, Cooks Peak Fire has held at 97% containment and 59,359 acres. Interior pockets of fuel may continue to burn down and smoke would be visible but the fire is not actively spreading. Smoke may be visible as fuels continue to burn down but the fire is not actively spreading. Crews will patrol and mop up along existing firelines and continue suppression repair work. Crews will closely watch and hold all lines as strong winds can carry hot embers across.
