Simms Fire Update
Friday, May 27, 2022 - 9:00am

Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests
Type 3 Incident Management Team
Justin Reece, Incident Commander

Current Situation:
The Simms Fire acreage is currently 313 acres with 100% containment. An infrared (IR) flight was flown yesterday morning, May 26, to help locate any remaining hot spots. The flight provided hot spot locations to firefighters to expedite mop up operations. Most of the identified hot spots were well within the interior of the burn area. Firefighters feel confident the fire will remain contained during the upcoming Red Flag weather. The Forest and Type 3 team have deliberately maintained a robust response team, not only to expedite mop up and suppression repair but also in anticipation of the forecasted wind event this weekend.

Suppression repair work continued today with fence repair on private properties and rehabilitating handlines. Crews have started to place seed around the burn area to help renew native vegetation. Fire crews have also been cleaning structures that were sprayed with retardant during aviation operations. An excavator arrived on Wednesday to begin rehabilitating dozer lines.

The Type 3 Incident Management Team remains in place as mop up operations continue.

Safety: Careful consideration for public and firefighter safety remains top priority on this incident. Wildcat Canyon and T&M Roads remain closed to the public while fire operations continue. Firefighters request that the public avoid the fire affected area out of respect for community and firefighter safety.

Weather & Fuel Conditions: Critical fire weather conditions return today and will continue through Saturday ahead of a cold front that is expected to arrive on Sunday. Temperatures are expected to be in the high 70's and humidity will range between 9-14%. Peak wind gusts this afternoon and again on Saturday will be between 30 and 45 mph. Sunday will bring improved humidity levels and cooler temperatures with a few showers also expected throughout the day.

Evacuations and Fire Restrictions:  There are no evacuation orders in place. For more information contact https://ouraycountyco.gov/272/Emergency-Management.

Simms Fire Update

Tuesday May 24, 2022 – 9:00am

Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team One Dan Dallas, Incident Commander

Current Situation: The Simms Fire acreage has decreased to 313 acres due to field verification and better mapping. Containment has reached 100%.  Firefighters continue to mop up and patrol firelines to ensure that containment lines will hold.  Today a drone will be used to survey the fire area to detect any heat sources that remain.  Any areas of heat that might pose a threat to containment lines will be mopped up.   In Division A, firefighters worked to mop up and secure the contained fire's edge.  Firefighters will focus on mopping up in this area to maintain containment. Patrols and gridding will continue to ensure threats to the fireline are mitigated.   In Division Z firefighters continue to improve the fireline by removing any residual heat to secure and protect structures. Patrols and gridding will continue to ensure threats to the fireline are mitigated.   Due to increased containment and decreased fire behavior, a local jurisdictional Incident Management Type 3 Team will be transitioning command on Wednesday, May 25, 2022. Tuesday, May 24th the incoming Team will work closely with the CIMT1. The Type 3 Incident Command Team is keeping in their operational organization Hand Crews, Engines, Water Tenders, Heavy Equipment, and an Ambulance.

Safety: Careful consideration for public and firefighter safety remains the top priority on this incident. As always, crews remain cautious, both on the fireline and while traveling to and from the fire. The CIMT1 has implemented sound practices to reduce the potential for the spread of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases to improve the health of firefighters and the communities served. Leading into the fire area, Wildcat Canyon and T & M Roads remain closed. Firefighters request that the public avoid the affected area out of respect for community and firefighter safety.

Simms Fire Update

Monday May 23, 2022 – 9:00am

Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team One Dan Dallas, Incident Commander

Current Situation:
The Simms Fire remains at 373 acres and is now 90 percent contained.

Firefighters continue to make good progress on strengthening existing containment lines by mopping up well within the perimeter to ensure that containment lines will hold.  Mopping up involves removing heat sources next to the line to ensure that the fire will remain within the perimeter under any weather conditions.  Well within the interior, hot spots will remain, and the public is reminded that they may see smoke and even pockets of open flame as large dead debris, such as logs and stumps, continue to burn and are fully consumed.

Located on the west side of the fire, Division A saw considerable work done as firefighters continue to mop up and secure the contained portion of the fire's edge.  A large vegetation mastication machine was used to remove vegetation to create a fuel break on the remaining uncontained portion of the fireline.  Firefighters will focus on mopping up in this area to further increase containment.

Located on the east side of the fire, Division Z had firefighters spread out over the entire division, improving the fireline and giving special attention to the head of the fire. Personnel continue to work to remove any residual heat to secure and protect structures.

Weather & Fuel Conditions: Today will be slightly cooler than yesterday with a high near 65 degrees and 17 percent relative humidity. Cloud cover of about 70 percent will help slow down the rate fuels will dry out. Today will be slightly less windy than yesterday, but there is still a threat of wind gusts up to 25 miles per hour. There is a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon.

Evacuations and Fire Restrictions: T&M Road and Wildcat Canyon Road remain open to residents but are still closed to the public. There are no evacuation orders in place currently. For more information contact https://ouraycountyco.gov/272/Emergency-Management.

There will be a community meeting tonight at 6 pm about the Simms Fire.  Details are being worked out at this time so please watch Inciweb and Facebook for announcement.

Current Situation: As a fire gets larger or additional resources are brought in, the fire is broken into geographic areas called Divisions to help focus suppression efforts and to help with supervisory span of control. We will use these terms in our updates to provide specific information about each part of the fire perimeter. Divisions will be shown on the fire maps. In Division A, on the west side of the fire, firefighters will continue to secure the fireline by mopping up any hotspots near containment lines and will construct handline into Wildcat Canyon. In Division Z, on the east side of the fire, firefighters will continue to secure the fireline by mopping up any hotspots near containment lines and grid the area outside of the fire perimeter to ensure there are no spot fires that could pose a risk when fuels dry out. The Structure Group will continue to mop up and secure around structures.

Safety: All evacuations have been lifted and Government Springs Road is open to through traffic.  Wildcat Canyon and T & M Roads leading into the fire area remain closed, and in the interest of public safety, fire officials ask the public to please avoid the area and respect all emergency closures. Firefighter and public safety remain the priorities on this incident.

Weather & Fuel Conditions: Moderated fire weather conditions are likely again today.  Although relative humidity has been high most of yesterday and last night, expect afternoon values to bottom out near 20% today and Sunday. Temperatures will begin to slowly warm up but remain below normal for this time of year with highs near 64 degrees.  Winds will be WNW at 10-15 mph with gusts to 25 mph.
