CURRENT SITUATION

 

With the significant increase in containment and tireless work by firefighters and cooperators to ensure that communities would be safe for repopulation, a large number of Mosquito Fire evacuees were allowed back home today. Both the Placer and El Dorado County Sheriff Offices downgraded many of the Evacuation Orders and Warnings in their perspective counties this afternoon.

 

Rain showers covered most of the fire area throughout the day. The cooler temperatures, higher humidity, and wet conditions subdued fire activity around the fire. Firefighters took advantage of these slower fire conditions to construct direct control lines along portions of the fire’s edge on the eastern flank. Firefighters with hand tools and heavy equipment, such as dozers, were out in force constructing these control lines. Crews worked in the area of the North Fork of the Middle Fork of the American River as well as the Interbay Road. Despite the rain showers, crews were able to successfully conduct firing operations along the Interbay Road and connecting control lines due to the sustained dry fuel moisture in the vegetation. Firefighters were able to continue strengthening and holding control lines around the southeast corner near Stumpy Meadows.

 

A majority of the aircraft assigned to the incident was able to be used throughout the day. Aircraft primarily focused on assisting the ground crews on the eastern flank of the fire. Helicopters were actively engaged in both water and retardant dropping missions. These air operations are a great resource for ground crews to knock down hot spots and reinforce control lines with retardant to the stop the fire’s progression.

 

Heavier rains and continued southwest winds are forecasted overnight and into Monday. A possibility of scattered thunderstorms may occur Tuesday. Firefighters will continue direct and indirect line construction along the eastern flank of the fire. Crews will patrol and mop up all existing containment lines along the southern and western flanks to ensure there are no threats to life and property in those communities.

Orders Downgraded to Warnings
Per the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, the following areas have changed to an Evacuation Warning status, and repopulation of these areas may now occur.

• Canyon Creek: This includes the area north of the intersection of Spanish Dry Diggins Road and Sliger Mine Road and north of the intersection of Spanish Dry Diggins and Reservoir Road.
• Bottle Hill: This includes the community north of the intersection of Wentworth Springs Road and Breedlove Road and south of Bottle Hill Road.
• Grey Eagle: This includes the area west of Kings Meadow, east of the intersection of Wentworth Springs Road and Breedlove, south of Wentworth Springs and north of Bald Mountain Canyon. The area North of Wentworth Springs will remain in an evacuation Order.

Warnings Lifted
Per the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, the Evacuation Warning status for these areas has been lifted and no restrictions are in effect for the following areas: 

• Cool: This includes the area East of Highway 49, south of the County Line, north of Highway 49/Coloma Road, and west of Greenwood Road.
• Garden Valley: This includes the area east of Lichen Creek, south of Greenwood Road, north of Highway 49, and west of Rock Creek Road. The Eldorado National Forest is still closed by Forest Order.
• Georgetown Proper: This includes the area west of the intersection of Breedlove Road and Wentworth Springs Road, east of Greenwood, south of the Bottle Hill Road, and north of Meadow Brooke Road. Eldorado National Forest is still closed by Forest Order.
• Swansboro: This includes the area east of Garden Valley, south of Sand Mountain, north of the Mosquito Bridge, and west of Traverse Creek. Eldorado National Forest is still closed by Forest Order.

 Zone 7 has been split into 7A and 7B.

• Zone 7A includes Patent Road. Zone 7A remains under an evacuation order.
• Zone 7B includes Todd Valley: east of McKeon-Ponderosa, west of Jarvis Road, south of Foresthill Road, north of the canyon rim of the Middle Fork of the American River. Zone 7B has been lifted to an evacuation warning. Repopulation of Zone 7B may now occur.

Fire
The fire is currently over 74,500 acres and 34% contained. Fire area growth may slow with rain, clouds, and cooler temperatures in the forecast. However, some fire growth due to persistently dry fuels and gusty winds is still expected and will contribute to continued smoke production. Heavier rain showers are expected late tonight through Monday, with isolated thunderstorms possible on Tuesday. Wet weather is possible into Wednesday.

Smoke
Fire activity under weakened winds contributed to significant smoke accumulation throughout most of the forecast area in the morning hours yesterday. With increased humidity and cooler temperatures moderating fire activity, smoke cleared across much of the forecast area by early afternoon. Portola and Truckee both continued to experience USG/Unhealthy air quality throughout the evening/night and into today as they are more directly in the path of the smoke plume. As of this morning, air quality continues to improve east, south, and west of the fire area. With heavier rain showers forecast for tonight through Monday, air quality is likely to continue improving in the coming days. USG/Unhealthy is still likely in Portola and Truckee depending on fire activity and plume direction today and tomorrow. Caution is advised when traveling along roadways in areas with smoke and reduced visibility.

CURRENT SITUATION

Colder temperatures, good humidity recovery, and precipitation arrived overnight with the forecasted storm system. Rain showers are expected to continue throughout the day and become heavier this evening and into Monday. Southwest winds are predicted to become stronger midday with 24-28 mph gusts over the ridges. Higher humidity and temperatures in the 50s are expected for the fire area today.

 

Firefighters worked throughout the night to patrol, hold, and improve existing containment lines around the fire’s perimeter, especially along the impacted communities on the south and western flanks. On the north end of the fire, crews continued to monitor and hold the control lines on Deadwood Road as there had been increased pockets of heat below those lines on Friday. Firefighters continued suppressing fire activity and secured the slop over along the eastern front between the Middle Fork of the American River and French Meadows Road. Crews successfully continued firing operations overnight along the Interbay Road until precipitation arrived early this morning. These operations continue to aid firefighters in stopping the fire’s spread eastward. Day shift firefighters will work to tie in control lines coming down from the Eleven Pines Road through Devil’s Peak to the rim of the Rubicon River. Control lines consisting of dozer and hand lines connect the dots around the southeast corner back to Stumpy Meadows and Wentworth Springs Road.

 

As rain showers are forecasted to continue through the day and become heavier overnight, crews will look for opportunities to make containment progress as it is safe to do so. Firefighters will continue shoring up the corners of the fire and ensure the southern and western flanks hold along the communities. Firefighters will also continue the process of backhauling unneeded hose, tools, and equipment from areas where they are no longer needed. Each day, operations section chiefs, law enforcement officials, and cooperators continue reevaluating the evacuation status of communities as they work towards safely repopulating these areas.

In both Placer and El Dorado counties, Damage Inspection Specialist (DINS) Teams have completed assessments of all structures within the Mosquito Fire perimeter. As we continue to work with our unified command partners to evaluate weather conditions and behavior of the Mosquito Fire, we are now lifting the evacuation order for Zone 12 and allowing residents to return home. PROOF OF RESIDENCY WILL BE REQUIRED TO ENTER ZONE 12.

El incendio de Mosquito permanece en comando unificado con el Equipo de Manejo de Incidentes Interagencial de California 5, CAL FIRE, el Sheriff del Condado de Placer, y el Sheriff del Condado de El Dorado.

SITUACIÓN ACTUAL

Por la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Placer: A partir de las 7 p.m. de esta noche, la Orden de Evacuación para la Zona 12 ha sido levantada y puesta bajo el estado de Advertencia de Evacuación. La repoblación de esta área puede ahora ocurrir con la prueba de residencia.

 

Como se anticipó, el aumento de los vientos del suroeste llegó hoy por delante del sistema de la tormenta que se aproxima con ráfagas de 20-25 mph a lo largo de las líneas de cresta. El aumento de la nubosidad y las temperaturas más frescas de la tarde han moderado parte de la actividad del fuego hoy. Porciones a lo largo del flanco oriental del Mosquito Fire permanecieron activas esta tarde, ya que el fuego sigue ardiendo en áreas con combustibles secos. Se produjo un incendio puntual justo fuera del borde oriental principal del incendio en la zona de French Meadows Road y los equipos están trabajando activamente para contenerlo. Este foco de fuego está todavía dentro de las líneas de contingencia que se han construido en el lado oriental del incendio. Los bomberos siguen haciendo buenos progresos en la contención del fuego a lo largo de la carretera de Eleven Pines y otras líneas de control a lo largo del flanco oriental que se mueve hacia el sur hacia el drenaje del río Rubicón. Las cuadrillas pudieron realizar con éxito operaciones estratégicas de disparo para seguir construyendo un amortiguador a lo largo de estas líneas de control. Los bomberos han seguido patrullando los flancos sur y oeste del incendio para limpiar agresivamente cualquier punto caliente que quede cerca de las líneas de control. Estas cuadrillas se están asegurando de que las áreas quemadas a lo largo de las líneas de contención están completamente extinguidas sin amenaza de escape.

 

Esta noche, los bomberos patrullarán, limpiarán y asegurarán todas las líneas de control y contención establecidas en un esfuerzo por asegurar que el fuego permanezca dentro de estas líneas existentes mientras se pone a prueba por este evento de viento. Las cuadrillas continúan controlando y manteniendo partes del incendio activo a lo largo de Deadwood Road y el flanco oriental. Los helicópteros de vuelo nocturno ayudarán a los equipos de tierra esta noche con misiones de reconocimiento y lanzamiento de agua. Se prevé que los vientos disminuyan durante la noche, y que las precipitaciones comiencen mañana y sean más intensas hasta el domingo por la noche. Se prevé que la lluvia húmeda continúe hasta el miércoles, con totales que se prevén cercanos a 1" al final de la tormenta. Los bomberos consideran que este tiempo húmedo es un acelerador del crecimiento del incendio, en el que pueden aprovechar la disminución de la actividad del fuego y hacer buenos progresos en el aumento de la contención.

CENTROS DE EVACUACIÓN

 

Condado de Placer:

·       Sierra College, 5100 Sierra College Blvd., Rocklin, California. Entre en Rocklin Road para aparcar, que está en el lote B. El refugio está en la cafetería (edificio J).

 

Condado de El Dorado:

·       Distrito de Servicios de Cameron Park, 2502 Country Club Drive, Cameron Park, California. Albergue para pasar la noche con comidas, duchas, servicios sanitarios limitados y aparcamiento para remolques. Se admiten animales en jaulas y transportes.

·       Green Valley Community Church, 3500 Missouri Flat Road, Placerville, California. El estacionamiento de vehículos recreativos es limitado y no hay conexiones. Se admiten animales domésticos pequeños en jaulas o con correa (no se admiten animales grandes ni pájaros).
