A standing dead tree or snag is smoking at the base. This tree is an example of a hazard for firefighters as it may fall at any time. Snags of this type are unsafe to fall as the top could easily break out and fall onto a sawyer. 

Heavy equipment including feller bunchers and masticators rolling into Division V. This equipment has been reducing fuel loading on road systems in preparation for burnout operations.

Aerial overview of strategic firing operation on the west flank of the Flat Fire. Firing operations were utilized to remove fuel between a road system and the main fire, which ultimately creates a containment line that firefighters will mop up. This video was taken by our Air Tactic Group Supervisor on Sunday, July 23. 

Firefighters conducted strategic firing operations on the western flank of the Flat Fire on July 23, 2023. These planned ignitions strengthen established control lines because fuel is removed between the main fire and control lines. 

An excavator with a masticator head grinds fuels along a forest road in the northeast portion of the fire. This road will serve as an indirect containment line, a line not on the fire's edge, to help keep the fire from spreading to the north and east.
