Firing operations, also referred to as burnouts, are being utilized along Forest Service Road 3680 and a control line near Game Lake. Aerial ignitions from drones (unstaffed aircraft systems) and helicopters provide depth by removing interior fuels in a coordinated, deliberate fashion. This will ultimately safeguard against weather events that may increase fire behavior and test the containment lines. The current weather conditions and fire operation methods have resulted in low intensity understory burns that limit tree mortality.

Operations Section Chief Trainee Brett Brown describes some of the past fire history in the Flat Fire area including the Biscuit and Klondike fire. These past fires have changed the vegetation on the ground affecting how the Flat Fire is moving on the landscape.

This short video shows some of the ongoing work to build alternate or backup lines along three road systems in the fire area, Hunter Creek (FR 3680), Quosatana (FR 3313), and Burnt Ridge (2208) roads. Coos Forest Protective Association (CFPA) is helping coordinate this effort.

Brett Thomas, Contingency Branch Director explains the scope and purpose of this work. "We are operating in three key areas right now within the contingency group. We are using mechanized equipment and some of our handcrews to get this project through. The whole purpose of this effort is to have an alternate, a backup, in case our primary lines are compromised at any point in time in the future."
