Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS), also known as drones, are being used in a few different ways on the Flat Fire. One special capability is identifying small pockets of heats in areas of heavy smoke. UAS pilots are able to talk with firefighters on the ground by radio to direct them to where the heat sources are located, even when the conditions are really smoky. Check out this video to see a snap shot of how this infrared technology is used.

Working together and having “all hands on deck” is an essential part of wildland firefighting. Coos Forest Protective Association (CFPA) has been an important partner in fighting the Flat Fire. Watch this short video with Mike Robinson, District Manager at CFPA to learn more about this partnership.

Over the past several days, CFPA crews, along with South Coast Lumber, have been clearing vegetation on the roads being prepared as alternate lines west of the fire.

This timelapse was taken Sunday, July 30 at 4:00 pm from Forest Service Road 3680 near Collier Butte. The smoke column is from a planned firing operation in the Lawson Creek drainage, well within established containment lines.

This video features a series of images with a K-MAX dropping water on hot spots in the northeast portion of the Flat Fire.
