Bedrock and Salmon Fires Daily Update August 12, 2023

Bedrock Fire, Salmon Fire
Publication Type: News 08/13/2023

Bedrock Fire: Fire crews are continuing to implement burnout operations in multiple areas along the fire’s northwestern and northeastern perimeters, continuing to methodically work south along the eastern and western flanks of the fire. Firefighters are holding and securing these lines after burn operations before proceeding to prepare and burn the next section of line. Smoke from these burns, along with fire burning well interior to control lines, will continue to produce visible smoke today. Fire crews are continuing to patrol around the southern fire perimeter to ensure lines remain secure. Firefighters responded to a small initial attack fire west of the Bedrock Fire yesterday and quickly extinguished it.

Salmon Fire: Yesterday crews successfully secured containment lines and installed hoselays around the fire. The fire has not grown over the past 24-hours. Patrolling and mop-up operations will continue today.

Evacuations: The Lane County Sheriff's Office issued a Level 1 “Be Ready” evacuation notice Monday for areas north and east of Oakridge because of the Salmon Fire. Follow all evacuation notices and orders. A searchable evacuation map with fire perimeters for both fires is available at Lane County’s website. This map has a ruler tool so the distance from the fires to various towns can be measured.

Smoke: Areas north and west of the fires should have minimal smoke with good air quality today, while McKenzie through to Sisters and Prineville will have moderate to Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG) air today. La Pine is expected to have air quality ranging from USG to unhealthy, while Oakridge and eastward on Highway 58 is predicted to have USG to unhealthy air quality conditions from late morning through the early evening.

Weather: A red flag warning is in effect tonight through Monday evening for winds and low humidity which will be favorable for rapid fire growth. Temperatures will be in the low 80s and light winds will trend west-northwest in the morning, becoming easterly in the afternoon with gusts up to 16 mph.

Safety and Closures: The Willamette National Forest implemented the Bedrock Fire Emergency Area Closure on July 24 to ensure the safety of the public and personnel working on the fire. An emergency closure order for the Salmon Fire area is in place as of August 8. The closure maps for the Bedrock and Salmon Fires are available on InciWeb. There are Temporary Flight Restrictions over the Bedrock and Salmon Fire areas. Residential electrical outages can be reported to Lane Electric at 541-484-1151.
