Camp Creek Fire Update for Saturday, September 9
Camp Creek Fire
Publication Type: News 09/10/2023
Fire size: 1940 acres
Containment: 26%
Personnel: 571 people
Weather and Fire Behavior:
Warm and dry conditions with clear skies will continue today into Sunday morning, which should support a moderate increase in fire activity and smoke. Temperatures will be in the 70s and no precipitation is expected. Strong east winds are not anticipated. Fuels continue to dry out, which make them more susceptible to spreading fire. Light winds and smoldering and creeping fire behavior contribute to smoke in the local area. There will likely be an observable increase in fire behavior and smoke today.
Operations:
Control line work has been successful to raise containment to 26% and further increases are anticipated. Conditions are expected to be favorable for firing operations today that can build upon Friday’s burning efforts. This work is currently being focused on the north side of the fire along Forest Road 12. Burn operations in this area should increase the effectiveness of control lines that have been developed and ensure the fire remains within the lines by removing fuel between the control line and main fire. Crews are working into the nighttime hours to monitor these burned areas. In addition to firing operations, crews and machinery continue to prep roads and contingency lines by chipping and removing snags. Firefighters are also constructing direct handlines in several locations once risks have been assessed and hazards mitigated. Crews are relocating some cut trees from the Bull Run area by log trucks and dump trucks for the next several days. These trees were cut to increase firefighter safety and widen the roads to be used as control lines. Trucks will be traveling along Forest Service Road 14 to the East Barlow Trail Road, and then onto Highway 26. Log trucks will be accompanied by pilot cars, both ahead and behind for added public safety. Residents who use these routes should be cautious while this added traffic is present. Fire information officers will be stationed at Hoodland Thriftway in Welches, OR today from 1 – 7 p.m. to provide updates and answer questions. Jonsrud Viewpoint will be similarly staffed on Sunday, September 10th from 1 – 7pm.
