Smoke Outlook
Northern-Central New Mexico Black Feather Fire
Fire
The Black Feather Fire has burned an estimated 2,158 acres and containment remains at 0%. Classic monsoon pattern more typical of the first half of August will bring increasingly moist, favorable weather conditions and much needed rainfall through early next week. As a result, significant active expansion of the fire perimeter is not anticipated in the near-term.
Smoke
With minimal fire activity, smoke impacts from the Black Feather Fire beyond the immediate perimeter are not likely to be significant for at least the next four days and possibly longer. The expected rainfall is unlikely to suppress the fire, as heat will be maintained in the heavy dead/down and blowdown fuels. However, the volume of smoke produced from smoldering interior heat and creeping is not expected to be substantial enough to result in more than brief MODERATE impacts for communities that are in close proximity. Overall, GOOD air quality conditions are expected through the outlook period.
