The Black Feather Fire is burning in the San Pedro Parks Wilderness near the Penas Negras Trail.

Smoke column from the Black Feather Fire.

Image is from inside the Black Feather Fire perimeter. This is an example of an area where the fire burned for a long time in heavy down and dead material. If you look closely, you can make out parts of logs, branches, a few small bushes, and even a few saplings. In the background there is still a lot of green and unburned fuels.

This is a zoomed out picture of same spot inside the Black Feather Fire perimeter. As can be seen from this perspective, there is still a lot of green and unburned fuels in the fire area.

UAS Module with infrared capabilities, otherwise known as a drone. Larger than your average drone, these are specialized pieces of equipment designed specifically to do this type of work.

Chainsaws are an important tool for a wildland firefighter. One way firefighters use chainsaws is to cut large dead and down material or fuels into small and more manageable pieces as can be seen in this photo taken on the Black Feather Fire.

The roads leading into the Black Feather Fire are used by fire crews to hike into where they will be working.

Photo was taken in the San Pedro Parks Wilderness in September 2010 and overlaps with the Black Feather Fire perimeter. Fuel loadings like this are common across the fire area.

Photo shows conditions typical in the Black Feather Fire perimeter and in the San Pedro Parks Wilderness. Forest stands dense with trees and heavy fuel loading. Taken in the Black Feather Fire area of the San Pedro Parks Wilderness circa 2010.

Fire personnel gathered for the morning briefing at the spike camp.

Fire personnel can stay in touch with loved ones in all sorts of ways, but nothing beats a post card!

A cool August morning at spike camp.
