Firefighters make significant progress on Cody Fire containment

Highlights: Thanks to the hard work of firefighters on the Cody Fire, containment increased significantly on Saturday from 5% to 47%. A community meeting is scheduled for tonight, Sunday, May 25, beginning promptly at 4 p.m. at Biosphere 2 (32500 S. Biosphere Road, Oracle, AZ 85623). This meeting will be livestreamed on the Coronado Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/CoronadoNF; ASL and CART captioning will be provided.
Fire Activity: Today, crews are building on yesterday’s momentum, continuing to patrol the fire area, extinguish hot spots, and conducting mop-up operations along containment lines. Isolated flare-ups may still occur as unburned fuel pockets ignite, producing visible smoke. However, these flare-ups remain within the established containment lines and do not pose a threat to containment efforts.
Crews will begin conducting suppression repair assessments to identify and address damage and repair needs across the fire area, and structure assessments remain ongoing. Incident personnel are also working with utility providers and local officials to evaluate conditions to support safe reentry for residents.
Evacuations: Updated evacuation orders remain in place to ensure public safety. Effective Saturday evening, , the following evacuation orders are in place:
GO Zones: 17 & 18 in the Oracle area;
SET Zones: 5, 13, 14, 15, 16, & 19 in the Oracle area;
READY Zones: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 20 in the Oracle area and San Manuel residents
Evacuation Centers: Canyon Del Oro High School, 25 W. Calle Concordia, Oro Valley, AZ 85704; Mammoth Community Center, 101 W. 5th St, Mammoth, AZ 85618.
Weather: Hot, dry conditions continue today, with sustained winds from 10-15 mph and gusts above 25mph.
Safety: High traffic conditions continue due to the holiday weekend. For public and firefighter safety, please avoid the area to allow fire traffic to work to contain the fire.
Road Closures: The following roads are closed - Cody Loop and Durant; Cody Loop and Mount Lemmon Highway (East End). Additional road status information is available at https://az511.gov.
Fire Restrictions and Closures: State 2 Fire Restrictions are issued for the Coronado National Forest, which includes recreational shooting (https://www.fs.usda.gov/r03/coronado/alerts). Stage 2 restrictions are also in effect on State Trust Lands in southern/southeastern Arizona (wildlandfire.az.gov). The fire area remains under Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs); if you fly a drone near the fire area, our aircraft will be grounded.
