Recent weather brought a warming and drying trend to the area, which increased fire activity in some portions of the Grizzly Fire. Air operations increased accordingly. While smoke increased and is expected to persist through the weekend, there was no significant growth on the fire despite this change in weather. Photo credit: Dan Martin, NW Team 6

Heavy equipment plays a large role in wildland firefighting. Bull dozers, excavators, and masticators are a few of the equipment pieces utilized for fire suppression and repair. These pieces of machinery can be been outfitted for wildland fire work and can vary in size and ability. For example, bull dozers are used for containment line creation, post-fire road repair, and moving large objects like trees or rocks. Excavators, like the one shown in this fire, are used much in the same way. A benefit of excavators is their ability to reach and lift objects. Excavators are also versatile; the head can be changed out and other heads installed. For example, a masticator head attached to an excavator is used to grind and chop vegetation and cut down standing trees.

These are just a few of the machines used on wildland fire. Feller-bunchers, heavy duty chippers, tree processors, skidders, and road graders are some other machines used on fires. All these pieces of equipment play a pivotal role in firefighting and are a benefit to firefighters and the communities and resources they are protecting.
