Gasquet, Calif., August 25, 2023. Firefighters were on high alert yesterday afternoon as the National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for the fire area for a fast-moving thunderstorm system, predicted to produce dry lighting and erratic winds. Preparation efforts continued in and around the town of Gasquet throughout the day, as well as indirect line construction from the 305 road to the North Fork of the Smith River.

Smith River Complex North update for Friday, August 25, 2023 Grants Pass, Ore. – Overnight, thunderstorms brought abundant lightning, gusty winds, scattered showers, and the possibility of new fires to southwest Oregon and northern California. Fire managers prepared for these storms and have plans to address new fires in cooperation with fire services and other emergency agencies.
Special Statement Smoke from new wildfires will continue to impact communities within the forecast area. Fire In addition to the Smith River Complex, new wildfires are burning in California and Oregon. Smith River Complex is more than 67,000 acres in CA and OR. Aircraft are flying again during periods of improved visibility. Fire crews are using engines and hand tools to protect structures in the Illinois Valley and suppress fires. Evacuations continue in high hazard areas.

Gasquet, Calif., August 24, 2023 Fire behavior was relatively moderated with most of the perimeter growth occurring on the Kelly fire between the transmission corridor and Elk Camp Ridge Road. Additional activity was across highway 199, along the 411 road above Darlingtonia. The Coon fire continues to grow towards the Kelly fire, as it moves to the northwest between Coon and Gordon Creeks.
