An example of a hazard tree on the Smith River Complex. This tree is burning inside the trunk, making it unstable and dangerous for firefighters. It is also on a slope above Hwy 199 and may fall on the highway unless it is cut.
Members of a Pacific Oasis crew remove fuels along the fire line west of Gilligan Butte, north of the Kelly Fire on August 26, 2023. They are cutting up logs and brush, then carrying them away from the fire line that was constructed using a bulldozer. Removing flammable materials near the fire line results in a less-intense fire and reduces the chance of fire crossing the line.
Firefighters inspect a sprinkler installation around structures off Lone Mountain Road near O'Brien on August 25. They are checking that water will reach the structures and adjacent flammable materials. Sprinklers installations can be set up to run without constant staffing, increasing the number of structures protected with limited personnel needed and reducing the risks to firefighters. Sprinklers also raise the humidity in locations where they are in use, reducing the chance of fire burning through an area.
